Norma Johnson
BROKEN BOW -- Norma L. Johnson, 68, of Broken Bow died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Cliff Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church music department.
Mrs. Johnson was born on Nov. 24, 1929, at Coldwater, Kan., to Ray E. and Esther (Ferrin) Bigbee. She graduated from Wilmore High School and attended Hayes State College. She taught at rural schools for two years.
She married
Willard L. Johnson on Aug. 21, 1949, at her parentsi home in Merna. They lived west of Broken Bow. In 1981, they moved to the edge of Broken Bow, where they lived at the time of her death.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday School, played the organ, sang in the choir, served on the education committee, helped with Cherub Choir and coordinated and taught Bible School.
She worked as a seamstress at Master Cleaners for more than 25 years. She was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years and was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed music, sewing, cooking and reading.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Jodene (Mrs. Dick) Taylor of Broken Bow; Esther (Mrs. Ben) Clark of Casper, Wyo., Karen (Mrs. Neal) Neth of Broken Bow and Nancy (Mrs. Les) Handley of Sac City, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry Bigbee and Bill Bigbee, both of Broken Bow; and stepmother, Zenith Bigbee of Broken Bow.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Lyddon; an infant brother, Richard; and one step great-grandson.
Gladys Martin
ALBION -- Gladys I. Martin, 96, of Albion died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Albion with the Rev. Eric Beihl officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
William Placke
ST. LIBORY -- William A. Placke, 65, of St. Libory died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Liboryis Catholic Church in St. Libory with Rev. David Rykwalder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 120 of Palmer.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul. Further visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the familyis choice.
Mr. Placke was born on July 4, 1932, in St. Libory to William F. and Kathryn (Zauha) Placke. He attended St. Liboryis parochial school through the 10th grade and graduated in 1950 from St. Paul High School.
He married
Marilyn Matousek on Oct. 11, 1952, at St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He farmed in the St. Libory area all his life and was associated with Placke Melons for 55 years.
He was a member of St. Liboryis Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1918 of St. Paul, American Legion Post No. 120 of Palmer, a former member of the St. Libory Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years and board member of the German Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joanie (Mrs. Dan) Gauthier of Bellmont, N.C., and Shelli (Mrs. Bill) Garrett of Hordville; five sons, Jerry, Gene, Rod and Darin Placke, all of St. Libory, and Dan Placke of Thornton, Colo.; two brothers, Bert Placke of St. Libory and Don Placke of Central City; two sisters, Veronica 'Dot' Jacobsen of McCook and Marilyn (Mrs. William) Retzlaff of Palmer; and 24 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Placke.
Macel Hoppe
WAHOO -- Macel M. Hoppe, 67, of Wahoo died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Wahoo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo with the Revs. Keith Rezac and Lawrence Gyhra officiating.
A prayer service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lords Catholic Church in Ravenna. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo with a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lords Catholic Church in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the Saunders County Hospice.
Mrs. Hoppe was born on Sept. 24, 1930, in Ravenna to Frank and LaFern (Hendrickson) Hervert. She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1947 and attended Kearney State Teachers College. She taught country school near Ravenna for several years.
She married
Robert Hoppe in Grand Island on April 18, 1950. They lived in Ord and moved to Wahoo in 1959. She owned and operated Hoppeis Complete Decorating Center in Wahoo for the past 39 years.
She was a past president and former board member of the Wahoo Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Wahoo Womenis Club, member V.F.W. Post 4502 auxiliary and former chairman of the V.F.W. Poppy Committee.
Survivors include two daughters, Mitzie (Mrs. Robert) DeTavernier of Omaha and Mary (Mrs. Eugene) Benes of Valparaiso; five sons, Brad of Wahoo, Chuck of Omaha, Bill of Albuquerque, N.M., Jim of Tampa, Fla., and Todd of Fremont; two sisters, Marvel (Mrs. Eddie) Buettner of Hay Springs and Adarene (Mrs. Lawrence) Miigrel of Ravenna; one brother, Robert Hervert of Ravenna; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Leroy.
'Bonnie' Flores
WICHITA, Kan. -- Josephine S. 'Bonnie' Flores, 63, of Wichita died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Wichita Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Salemsborg Lutheran cemetery in rural Smolan Kan., with the Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Salemsborg Lutheran Church in rural Smolan, Kan.
There is no visitation. Hays Funeral Home of Lindsborg, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or community Hospice of Kansas.
Mrs. Flores was born on Nov. 21, 1934, at Pine Ridge, S.D., to Gilbert and Hazel (Olson) Bowman. She married
Don Fullerton in 1951, Floyd A. Jones in May 1963 and Lee Flores in May 1981.
She was a resident of Wichita since 1963, moving from Omaha. She worked at the senior companion program for Riverside Hospital in Wichita. She attended Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. She volunteered for the Salvation Army bell ringers, the Citadel, First Presbyterian Church thrift shop and the Good Neighbor Center, all in Wichita.
Survivors include two sons, David Fullerton of Kansas City, Mo., and John Jones of Salina, Kan.; three daughters, Micki Swenson of Smolan, Kan., Kelly Jones of Grand Island and Mary Carlson of Manhattan, Kan.; her mother, Hazel Bowman of Martin, S.D.; one brother, Tom Bowman of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Dr. Mary Ann Bowman-Arnold of Effingham, Kan.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and one son, Joseph 'Casey' Jones.
Lori Hiner
GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lori L. Hiner, 38, of 609 420th Ave., Grinnell, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at her home of renal failure.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michaelis Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be at St. Michaelis cemetery in Spalding.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m. Monday at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.
Memorials are suggested to Grinnell Regional Medical Centeris dialysis unit.
Mrs. Hiner was born on Sept. 3, 1959, to Melvin and Eva (Dresch) Langer at Spalding. She was raised on the family farm near Spalding and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1977. She attended Kearney State College. She then worked for the General Telephone Company in Kearney. In 1983, she moved to Grinnell and worked as a customer clerk for General Telephone Company.
She married
Kenneth Hiner on Aug. 24, 1985, in Grinnell. Due to her kidney and diabetic illness, she was forced to retire in 1986.
She was a member of St. Maryis Catholic Church in Grinnell.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; her daughter, Hannah Langer of Grinnell; a stepson, Joshua Hiner of Randolph, Wis.; her parents; one brother, Tom Langer of Spalding and three sisters, Sharon Bopp of Grand Island, Shirley McDonnel of Alexander, Ark., and Jackie Bentz of Ashland.
Joy Bromwich
Joy W. Bromwich, 67, of Grand Island died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Bromwich was born on Aug. 30, 1930, at Winner, S.D., to Percy and Mabel (Walton) Bromwich. He grew up and was educated at Winner, S.D.
He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 28, 1952, served during the Korean War and was discharged on Jan. 28, 1954.
He married
Elsie Henneman on March 4, 1954, at Winner, S.D. The couple lived at Winner, where he worked as a mechanic. They moved to Grand Island in May 1969, and he continued to work as a mechanic for various companies. He began working for Larry's Steel and Welding in 1981 and retired in November 1996 due to ill health.
He was a member of the Methodist faith and the American Legion in Grand Island.
Survivors include one son, Brad Bromwich of Grand Island; three daughters, Debbie Miller of Ravenna, Delores O'Brien of Grand Island and Linda Cox of Carson City, Nev.; eight grandchildren; his father, of Winner, S.D.; four brothers, Roland Bromwich of Winner, S.D., Arthur Bromwich of Cambridge, Minn., Dean Bromwich of Grange, Wyo., and Darrell Bromwich of Grand Island; and three sisters, Wanda Hrabanek of Colome, S.D., Eunice Sharer of Ideal, S.D., and Lois Sachtjen of Winner, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a grandson.
