U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Harold Mars

WESTERVILLE -- Harold C. Mars, 90, of Westerville died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Bill Jay will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the Weissert Church of God.

Mr. Mars was born on Sept. 9, 1908, near Ord to Charles Henry and Bertha Grace (Phelps) Mars. He attended school north of Burwell.

He married Dorothy Mae Dietz on April 3, 1937, at Stamford. He spent most of his life farming and ranching.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond of Jackson, Miss., Donald of Dallas and Neal of Oceanside, Calif.; one daughter, Judy (Mrs. Dennis) Stunkel of Broken Bow; 10 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl of Pullman, Mich., and Ray of Chehalis, Wash.; two sisters, Betty Fish of Oakville, Wash., and Ruth Johnson of Shelton, Wash.; and a special friend, Una Gilfert of Westerville.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, five brothers and three sisters.

Maxine Moffett

GIBBON -- Maxine Moffett, 81, of Gibbon died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Barbara Spangler will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.

The casket will be open for viewing prior to services Friday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Miss Moffett was born on Nov. 16, 1917, on a farm north of Gibbon to James C. and Matie E. (Ginther) Moffett. She grew up in the Gibbon area and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1936. She spent her early working years as a cook and waitress in restaurants in Kearney.

She later was a housekeeper for her brother Carl in Gibbon. She retired and moved to Kearney to live with her sisters. She moved to the Gibbon Good Samaritan Center in 1983 because of health problems.

Survivors include a son, Ray Moffett of Gibbon; five brothers, Carl of Gibbon, Maurice "Jack" of Kenesaw, Leonard of San Diego and Bradley and Don, both of Shelton; and four sisters, Dottie Allen of San Diego, Becky Howard of Sterling, Colo., and Susie and Leone Moffett, both of Kearney.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.

Gaylene Phillips

LINCOLN -- Gaylene Kay Phillips of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln.

Services were on Monday at Roper and Sons Chapel in Lincoln. The Rev. Carl Godwin officiated.

Survivors include three sons, Rick of Fruita, Colo., and Shawn and Brock, both of Lincoln; one daughter, Nikki of Lincoln; six grandchildren; her father, Junior Gregg of Lincoln; three brothers, Gary and Kevin, both of Lincoln, and Doug of Syracuse; and one sister, Rita Compton of Syracuse.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn.

Eileen Heneage

PACIFICA, Calif. -- Eileen Heneage, 79, of Pacifica, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Pacifica.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate.

There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Heneage was born on March 11, 1920, at Grand Island to Otto and Alma (Mewes) Schmidt. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island, where she graduated from high school.

She married Thomas Heneage on Sept. 7, 1957, at Carmel, Calif. They lived in San Francisco and Pacifica, Calif.

She was a member of West Portal Lutheran Church in San Francisco.

Survivors include her husband.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Cain and Norma Schmidt.

Terry O'Neill

OSCEOLA, Iowa -- Terry O'Neill, 68, of Osceola, Iowa, died of cancer on Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church in Boone, Iowa. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery in Boone.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel in Boone.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Heart of Iowa Chapter Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. O'Neill was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and lived in Boone, Iowa, most of his life. He served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was state manager for the Savings and Bond Division of the U.S. Treasury Department from 1965 to 1992.

He was accounts receivable manager for Roasterie Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., from 1993 to present.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; six sons, Kelly of Lawrence, Kan., Brian of Denison, Iowa, Pat of Medina, Ohio, Dan of Kansas City, Mo., Jim of Grand Island and Kerry of Omaha; five daughters, Gayle Rinehart of Boone, Iowa, Peggy O'Neill-Totten of Carlisle, Iowa, Maureen Dresen of Earling, Iowa, Kathleen O'Neill of Nevada, Iowa, and Lisa Kladivo of Prairie City, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; two brothers, Denny O'Neill of Rogers, Ark., and Michael "Bill" O'Neill of Holstein, Iowa; and a sister, Cindy Frank of Omaha.

Vernal Wisely

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Vernal P. Wisely, 49, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Eric Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Wisely was born on April 27, 1949, at Central City to Kenneth and Edna (Ruge) Wisely. The family moved to Grand Island in 1956. He was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Northwest High School in 1967.

He entered the Army on Aug. 14, 1968, and served in Vietnam until his discharge on May 21, 1970. He returned to Grand Island and worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He married Pat Koehler at Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1995 and worked for various construction firms. He enjoyed working with leather and playing the guitar.

Survivors include one son, Christopher Wisely of Lincoln; three granddaughters; his parents, of Grand Island; and a grandmother, Mae B. Wisely of St. Paul.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Paul Wisely and Herman and Anna Ruge.

Ella Petzoldt

Ella M. Petzoldt, 97, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Community Care of America.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gretchen Diers will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Petzoldt was born on Feb. 16, 1900, in rural Hall County to William and Ilse (Ostermeier) Mettenbrink. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island.

She married Henry Petzoldt on Feb. 10, 1924, at Grand Island. They farmed north of town until retiring in 1957. They moved to Grand Island, and she worked at Brandies. Mr. Petzoldt died on April 6, 1986.

Mrs. Petzoldt was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

Survivors include three sons, Clarence and Lester, both of Grand Island, and Raymond of Hastings; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one infant son, William; six brothers, Fred, Charles, Bill, Henry, August and Louie Mettenbrink; and two sisters, Emma Mettenbrink and Elsie Windolph.
