U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Cecil Roberts

ALBION -- Cecil Herbert Roberts, 87, of Albion died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ in Albion. The Rev. Mary Avidano will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mr. Roberts was born on Jan. 4, 1911, on the family farm north of Albion to Christopher and Violet (Lukenbach) Roberts. He was educated in the Albion public schools and graduated from Albion High School in 1929. Following graduation, he worked at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Oregon.

He married Marguerite Anderson on July 4, 1939. They lived in Albion, where he worked as a painter.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ of Albion.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen Bumgardner and Judy (Mrs. Alan) Choat of Albion; one son, Cecil "Butch" Roberts Jr. of Rising City; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harvey Roberts of Glide, Ore.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and four sisters, Vernie, Edna, Gladys and Ruby.

Mildred Brandt

Mildred L. Brandt, 97, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Eric Ford officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Brandt was born on Oct. 22, 1900, at Indianola to Jay L. and Clora E. (Thompson) McCafferty. She grew up and was educated at Indianola, graduating from Indianola High School in 1919. She moved to Hastings following her graduation and worked for Stein Brothers until 1924.

She married Ernest R. Brandt on Jan. 18, 1924, at Smith Center, Kan. The couple lived in Hastings and in various locations throughout Nebraska. They moved to Grand Island in 1942.

Mrs. Brandt was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the WSCS.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Margie Brandt of Des Moines, Iowa; a grandson, Jay Brandt of Des Moines, Iowa; and a granddaughter, Susan McDermott of Seattle and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in by her husband; a son, Donald; and four brothers, Clifton, Chester, Merrit and Dean.

Dorothy Schuster

Dorothy Schuster, 67, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Schuster was born on Oct. 2, 1931, to Walter and Bernice (Olson) West of Grand Island. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School.

She married Gordon Schuster on June 28, 1953, at Grand Island. They lived on a farm near Phillips. They moved from the farm to Grand Island in 1984.

She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society and the Grand Island Woman's Club.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Debra (Mrs. Clyde) Sorensen of Phillips; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Ancel Conaway

Ancel Albert Conaway, 84, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Simmons Chapel in Smith Center, Kan. Dale McCain will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery at Smith Center.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Heart Association.

Mr. Conaway was born on Feb. 19, 1913, in Smith County, Kan. He lived in Smith Center from 1913 to 1983, when he moved to Grand Island.

He had worked as an auto mechanic. His wife, Erma, died in 1982.

He was a member of the United Church of Athol.

Survivors include four sons, Bernard of Smith Center, Roger of Hutchinson, Kan., Linn of Clarks and Lyle of Grand Island; three daughters, Wilma Hughes and Lela Rogers, both of Smith Center, and Elsie Wittke of Mooresville, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Oliver Fackler

Oliver S. Fackler, 69, of 3005 E. Highway 30 died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.

Mr. Fackler will be cremated after the services, and burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Fort McPherson National cemetery near Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Fackler was born on July 8, 1928, in North Platte to Earl and Clara (Ray) Fackler. He attended District 44 School at North Platte. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on March 5, 1946, in Omaha, served in the Pacific area and was discharged on June 8, 1947, in Great Lakes, Ill.

He married Doris M. Corbin in March 18, 1949, in Norton, Kan. Mr. Fackler worked on farms and ranches near Brownlee and Thedford. The couple then lived in Broken Bow, where Mr. Fackler worked for Arrow Freight Co.

The couple moved to Grand Island in 1954. Mr. Fackler drove a cab and then worked for Knight Brothers Construction. He owned and operated Fackler Service Station from February 1965 until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4677 of Alda and Wood River.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Sam Fackler of Boelus; one daughter, Betty Jean (Mrs. Ken) Kelly of Lamar, Ark.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Fackler of Wellfleet; and one sister, Lorna Gier of Gordon.

Kent Fisk

Kent S. Fisk, 23, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Fisk was born on July 22, 1974, at Grand Island to Kent E. and Linda (Renner) Fisk. He attended Northwest High School and received his GED. He worked at various jobs around Grand Island. He enjoyed building with wood, fishing and model cars.

Survivors include his parents, of Grand Island; and two sisters, Amy Fisk of Grand Island and Angela (Mrs. Steve) Hansen of Bellevue.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Esther Robertson.
