Thomas Nishimura
Thomas Nishimura, 83, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Richard Bacon will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Rose Hills cemetery in Whittier, Calif.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or to the American Cancer Society.

H. Clark Beck
Gibbon -- H. Clark Beck, 87, of Gibbon died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at the Wood River Good Samaritan Center.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon-Shelton.
Tonya Burns
HASTINGS -- Tonya Burns, 29, of Hastings died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings. The Rev. David F. Bourek will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar View cemetery at Doniphan.
A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Burns was born on Dec. 25, 1968, in Hastings to Frank and Joan (Schmitz) Detamore. She graduated from Giltner High School in 1987 and attended Central Community College in Grand Island for two years. She lived in Fayetteville, Ark., and Goodman, Mo., before moving to Lincoln.
She married
James Burns on Aug. 31, 1996, in Noel, Mo. She moved to Hastings a year ago.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 300 of Doniphan.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Jordan Burns at home; her parents, of Hastings; two sisters, Terra (Mrs. Joel) Hinrichs of Giltner and Tracey (Mrs. Chris) Rutt of Hastings; one brother, Travis Detamore of Hastings; and her grandparents, Eugene Schmitz of Hastings and Don and Evelyn Detamore of Giltner.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Grace Schmitz.
Vernon Cline
AURORA -- Vernon Albert Cline, 87, of Aurora died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Mr. Cline was born on April 23, 1910, in Hamilton County to William and Blanche (Chambers) Cline. He grew up and was educated near Phillips and graduated from Phillips High School.
He married
Neta Lantzer on Aug. 14, 1938, at Aurora. They farmed in York and Box Butte counties for many years and moved to Aurora in 1968. He worked at the Aurora cemetery and the Aurora schools before retiring. Mrs. Cline died on Jan. 16, 1988.
Mr. Cline was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and the Aurora Lions Club and spent many hours volunteering at the Plainsman Museum in Aurora.
Survivors include two sons, Robert and Gerald, both of Central City; one daughter, Donna (Mrs. Ronald) Ellison of Gresham; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nora (Mrs. Gordon) Johnson of Lincoln.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter; a brother, Earl; and a sister, Velma Omel.
Lawrence Czaplewski
RAVENNA -- Lawrence Czaplewski, 77, of Ravenna died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna Emergency Unit.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Czaplewski was born on Oct. 23, 1920, in Loup City to Frank and Marie (Mendyk) Czaplewski. He was educated in Loup City and graduated from Loup City High School.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Philippines.
He married
Jeanne Guzinski on Oct. 5, 1942, in Neosho, Mo. He managed Ray's Market in Ravenna from 1948 to 1957. He worked for Merchant Biscuit Co. in Broken Bow from 1957 to 1959, when they were transferred to Omaha. They moved to Ravenna after buying Drown's Grocery Store in 1964. They ran Chip's Market until 1985. Mrs. Czaplewski died on Feb. 20, 1990.
Mr. Czaplewski was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include one brother, Jerry Czaplewski of North Platte; and one sister, Virginia Chramosta of Lincoln.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Doris Hempstead
MERNA -- Doris Hunt Hempstead, 89, of Merna died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Merna. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
A memorial has been established to the church.
Mrs. Hempstead was born on May 10, 1908, in a sod house on her parents' homestead in Blaine County to Henry and Emma (Diechen) Sauerberg. She grew up on the family homestead and attended Blaine County schools.
She married
Almer Downer Hunt of Merna on Nov. 26, 1927. Mr. Hunt died on Jan. 9, 1965.
She married
Lyle W. Hempstead of Broken Bow on May 15, 1967. They lived for a short time in Broken Bow and then returned to Merna. Mr. Hempstead died on April 7, 1988.
Mrs. Hempstead was a member of the Merna United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting and other kinds of hand work as well as gardening and yard work.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Louise Reynolds of Merna; one son, James Hunt of Milburn; two stepsons, Vaughn Hempstead of Anselmo and Max Hempstead of Security, Colo.; six grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by two step granddaughters, one step grandson, five sisters and two infant brothers.
