Peter Jarzynka
St. Paul -- Peter E. Jarzynka, 100, formerly of Loup City, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Revs. Reggie Urban, David Rykwalder and Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic cemetery at Ashton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jarzynka was born on Sept. 30, 1897, on a farm southwest of Paplin to John and Katherine (Koslicki) Jarzynka. He attended the Paplin Parochial School and farmed with his family. He played the accordion and violin with his family for many area dances. He and his father built a new farmstead southwest of Ashton around 1919.
He married
Teckla Cours on Jan. 25, 1921, at Posen. The couple farmed near Ashton. Mrs. Jarzynka died on Dec. 7, 1922.
He married
Philomena Smedra on April 24, 1923, at Paplin. He worked on the irrigation project from Arcadia to Loup City from 1934 to 1936. The couple farmed in the Ashton area until 1964, when they retired and moved into Loup City. Mrs. Jarzynka died on Feb. 4, 1973.
Mr. Jarzynka moved to the Rose Lane Home in Loup City in February 1994 and to the Howard County Community Hospital extended-care wing in June 1994.
He was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church and a former District 26 school board member.
Survivors include four sons, Alvin of Ashton, Virgil of Omaha and Don and Tom, both of Grand Island; five daughters, Isabel (Mrs. Leo) Szatko of Clarks, Elaine (Mrs. Leonard) Mostek of St. Paul, Alice Ann (Mrs. Don) Lonowski of Alda and Geraldine (Mrs. Dennis) Rewolinski and Lois (Mrs. Joel) Reynolds, both of Omaha; 39 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Anzel Jarzynka; one daughter, Deloris Jarzynka; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; five brothers, Anton, Frank, Teofil, John and Xavier; and seven sisters, Rozalia Stefanowicz, Julia Kwiatkowski, Barbara Tesmer, Mary Zocholl, Eleanor Smedra, Theresa Maciejewski and Clara Kwiatkowski.
Dr. Otis Miller
ORD -- Dr. Otis Miller, 77, of Ord died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Revs. Dennis Ritchey and Paul Day will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord Evangelical Free Church or the family's choice.
Raymond Ridenour
RAVENNA -- Raymond Ridenour, 84, of Ravenna died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Arnold Kramer will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ridenour was born on Jan. 8, 1914, in Page County, Iowa, to Charles and Cora (Walters) Ridenour. He was educated in Seneca and graduated from Seneca High School in 1934.
He married
Helen Wilson on July 27, 1937, at Hot Springs, S.D. He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He moved to Ravenna in 1943.
He married
Lucille Okrina on Jan. 1, 1984.
He was a member of the Congregational Church, the United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Retired Railroad Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; one son, Brian Ridenour of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma Tinnell of Oceola, Iowa, and Fern Eveland of Burwell.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one daughter, one son, three brothers and three sisters.
Mabel Ruby
Broken Bow -- Mabel E. Ruby, 102, of Broken Bow, formerly of Stapleton, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Stapleton. The Rev. James Mote will officiate. Burial will be in Floral Lawn Memorial Garden at North Platte.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow and from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Ruby was born on Jan. 15, 1896, on a farm near Riverton to Willis J. and Emma (Laycock) Tupper. She grew up and was educated there.
She attended teachers colleges at Peru and Kearney and taught in Riverton and surrounding communities. She accepted a teaching position at Lowell in 1919.
She married
Guy H. Ruby in 1922 in Riverton. They lived on a farm near Ringgold and in McPherson County before moving to Logan County in 1932. They farmed and ranched southwest of Stapleton for 28 years.
They moved into Stapleton in 1960. Mr. Ruby died in 1975. Mrs. Ruby moved to Broken Bow in 1989 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Charles Druery. She suffered a severe stroke on Dec. 21, 1993, and was confined to a nursing home until her death.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stapleton for more than 60 years. She was a charter member of the Banner Mothers Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Ray) Glahn of Bellingham, Wash., and Gwen (Mrs. Charles) Druery of Broken Bow; one son, Willis Ruby of Lander, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Errol Tupper of Omaha.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one great-grandson; four brothers, Clifford Tupper, Oscar Tupper, Bryan Tupper and Lucius Tupper; and three sisters, Verna Shineman, Harriot Jones and an infant sister, Via.
Virgil Scofield
DANNEBROG -- Virgil L. Scofield, 78, of Dannebrog died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City cemetery with rites by St. Paul Masonic Lodge 82, A.F. & A.M.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Scofield was born on Aug. 29, 1919, at Dannebrog at Dannebrog to Clellie G. and Audrey E. (Hurst) Scofield. He grew up at Dannebrog and attended school there, graduating in 1937.
He worked with his father in Scofield and Son Trucking and at their Phillips 66 station in Dannebrog.
He married
Phyllis Windolph on Aug. 28, 1940, in St. Paul. The couple lived in Dannebrog. He continued to work in the trucking business and service station until 1948. He then worked for Pete Jacobsen in the grocery store and at Jacobsen Mortuary.
He managed the Farmers Union Co-op in Dannebrog from 1950 until retiring in 1984. After retiring, he became part
owner of the Purple Plum Gift Shop in Grand Island and worked part time for the Howard County assessor.
He enjoyed golfing, traveling, automobiles, school sporting events and was an avid Nebraska football fan. He did volunteer work for the Booster Club, hike and bike trail and the volunteer fire department, all of Dannebrog.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.; Eagles; St. Paul Masonic Lodge 82, A.F. and A.M.; and the Platt-Duetsche. He was a charter member of the Dannebrog Lions Club.
He served on the village board, church council and school board.
Mr. and Mrs. Scofield were named Grundlovs Festival king and queen in 1996. Mr. Scofield received the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce Boss of the Year Award in 1975.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Val Jean P. (Mrs. Duane) Lemburg of Golden, Colo., Vicki L. Madsen of Lakewood, Colo., and Renee C. Simdorn of Dannebrog; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one adopted sister, Ona Faye Stark of Geneva.
