Carl Gordon
PURDUM - Carl E. Gordon, 87, of Purdum died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Purdum with the Rev. David Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary and from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Sylvester Schrad
OMAHA - Sylvester J. Schrad, 80, of Omaha died Saturday, May 16, 1998, in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Richard's Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery in Omaha.
Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at John A. Gentleman Mortuaries Westside Chapel in Omaha.
Mr. Schrad was born on March 14, 1918, in Raeville to Frank and Mary Schrad.
He worked as a salesman for Ford Motor Co.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; six sons, Patrick of Wood River, Steven of Lincoln and Chuck, Mike, Tim and Tom, all of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Carl of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two sisters, Eileen Funk of Battle Ground, Wash., and Maelize Petersen of San Diego.
Larry Lee Walters
OSHKOSH - Larry Lee Walters, 55, of Oshkosh died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 17, 1998, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Oshkosh United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Haigler City Cemetery.
Memorials will be used locally. Holechek Funeral Home of Oshkosh is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Walters was born on Sept. 19, 1942, at Oberlin, Kan., to William and Betty (Barrett) Walters. He was educated at Oberlin.
He served briefly in the U.S. Navy.
After his discharge, he returned to Oberlin and worked with his father as a carpenter.
He married
Connie Tucker on March 29, 1969, at Kearney. They lived in Oshkosh, where he worked with his father as an auto mechanic. They returned to Oberlin in 1970 for four years. After coming back to Oshkosh in 1974, he worked at the Garden County Hospital in the maintenance department until ill health forced his retirement in 1983.
He enjoyed his large gardens, cooking, black powder shoots, wood working and his family.
He was baptized in the Methodist Church in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Corina (Mrs. Michael) Bozzetto of Ayr, Queensland, Australia, Deborah (Mrs. Doug) Holmes of Grand Island and Sheri (Mrs. Joe) McCord of Oshkosh; two grandchildren; a brother, Randy Walters of Oberlin, Kan.; and a sister, Nila Jean (Mrs. Max) Hafner of Oberlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cay Ewoldt
KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Cay Ewoldt, 95, of Knoxville, Iowa, formerly of Grand Island, grandson of a Hall County pioneer family, died Monday, May 18, 1998, in Knoxville.
Memorial services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Rodney Bell
ALDA -- Rodney A. Bell, 57, of Alda died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center Skilled Nursing Unit in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. wake service, Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Bell was born on Feb. 14, 1941, at Giltner to Donald E. and Irma R. (Mohlman) Bell. He grew up and attended school in Giltner, graduating in 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy.
He married
Judith K. Riese on July 21, 1973, in Grand Island. He owned and operated a contracting business in Grand Island. The couple moved to Lincoln in 1981 and returned to Grand Island in 1992. He continued in the contracting business.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald Bell of Lincoln and Rick at home; two daughters, Andrea Bell of Kearney and Amy Bell of Lincoln; two grandchildren; his parents, of Giltner; two brothers, James Bell and Vernon Bell, both of Garland, Texas; and one sister, Judy (Mrs. Orville) Cox of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Bell; and one brother, Richard Bell.
Myrtle Christenson
BURWELL -- Myrtle Adella Christenson, 96, of Burwell died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Mrs. Christenson was cremated. A memorial service and burial will be at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Lufkin, Texas.
Memorials are suggested to the Community Memorial Health Center, St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell or the Burwell Rescue Unit Supply Fund.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Christenson was born on March 29, 1902, in Irving, Ky., to Samuel and Arena (Horn) Brinegar.
She married
Henry J. "Hank" Christenson in Bovey, Minn. After a few years, they moved to Lufkin. Mr. Christenson died on Feb. 3, 1972. Mrs. Christenson moved to the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell in June 1993.
She was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and a charter member of the First Lutheran Church in Lufkin, Texas.
Survivors include one son, Dean Christenson of Burwell; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Royce; and 10 brothers and sisters.
'Mike' Flanagan
ALBION -- Duane Joseph "Mike" Flanagan, 64, of Albion died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Helga Hald
ST. PAUL -- Helga L. Hald, 104, of St. Paul, formerly of Dannebrog, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery at Dannebrog.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. Further visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Hald was born on April 18, 1894, at Dannebrog to Lars and Inger (Andersen) Jacobsen. She attended school at Dannebrog until the eighth grade, when she had to quit to take care of her brothers and sisters at home.
She later worked at a grocery store.
She married
Harold Hald at Dannebrog. The couple moved to Potter, where they homesteaded. They lived there for one year. They then moved to Dannebrog. Mrs. Hald worked at the post office and later became postmistress, retiring in 1970. They moved to Heritage Living Center in 1992.
Survivors include one son, Richard Sr. of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Harold Jr.; two daughters, Mary Jane Lockhart and Doris Tillman; two grandchildren; and nine brothers and sisters.
