Jack Hackett
Jack J. Hackett, 81, of 2718 Sunny Brook Road died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Mr. Hackett's body was cremated, and interment of the ashes will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 632.
Mr. Hackett was born on Sept. 17, 1917, in Alton, Ill., to Valentine and Libby (Easton) Hackett. He was educated in Peoria, Ill., and graduated from high school in 1935.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1935 to 1938. He then attended the University of Illinois. He re-enlisted in the Army infantry in 1941 and received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and the landing on Omaha Beach. He was wounded in action and was discharged in 1945.
Mr. Hackett married
Evelyn Marie Dworak on May 10, 1959, at Winter Haven, Calif. He was a truck sales representative for a worldwide truck company and retired after 35 years of employment. He and his wife came to Grand Island in April 1991.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Military Order of the Purple Heart, which he served as judge adjutant and commander.
Survivors include his wife; three half sisters, Delores J. Otten of Washington, Ill., Shirley J. Snyder of Winter Haven, Fla., and Jerri Shurts of Peoria, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Angelica L. Phillips.
Irene Ludington
Irene Koch Ludington, 81, of Grand Island died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis Holzworth will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Anna Miller
Mary Anna Miller, 95, of Grand Island, formerly of Loup City, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
Mary Smith
Mary B. Smith, 94, of Grand Island, formerly of Shelton, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Shelton. The Rev. Ted Dubs will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was cremated. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 13, 1904, at Bloomington to William and Bertha (Witzleben) Brebner. The family moved to a farm near Shelton in 1919. She graduated from Platte Valley Academy in 1923.
She graduated from Union College in Lincoln in 1931. Her first teaching experience was home schooling in the Mitchell area. She also taught in the Ashby, Denman and Shelton schools. She taught for 23 years. She attended Kearney State Teachers College for her teaching certificates.
She married
Homer C. Smith in May 1939 at Whitman. They lived on a farm near Shelton. Mr. Smith died in 1952. Mrs. Smith continued to live on the farm. She sold Stanley Home Product for 20 years. She worked at the Wood River Nursing Home, retiring at the age of 70. She studied cabinetry at the age of 75 and made a china hutch and 81 wall clocks from various woods.
She moved from the farm to Pioneer Apartments in Shelton in 1994, moved to Lebensraum Retirement Home in Grand Island in February 1997 and to Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center in October 1997.
She was a member of the Shelton Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Survivors include one stepson, Marion Smith of Alliance; two step grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Beulah Swisher of Lincoln and Isabel Green of Denver.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Witthaus; and two brothers, Roy and George.
Rev. William Conrad
STROMSBURG -- The Rev. Dr. William Rovestad Conrad, 83, of Stromsburg died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Keith Brozek officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
The Rev. Conrad was born on Aug. 28, 1915, at Monmouth, Ill., to the Rev. Dr. Titus and Antonia (Rovelstad) Conrad. He graduated from North High School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1933.
He attended Drake University for one year. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in arts. He graduated from Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, Ill., in 1941.
He married
Faith Mardell Hanson on June 5, 1941, in Omaha. He was ordained at the First Lutheran Church in Hastings, Minn., and served churches in Minnesota, Nebraska and California until retiring in Stromsburg in 1981.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Stephen L. of Hollywood, Calif.; one daughter, Paula (Mrs. Ed) Castagna of St. Cloud, Minn.; three granddaughters; one brother, Dr. Theodore Conrad of Minneapolis; and two sisters, Louise Klimek of Hawthorne, N.J., and Edna Anderson of Rancho Mirage, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and one brother, Luther.
Bob Grigsby
CENTRAL CITY -- Bob Grigsby, 67, of Central City died on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Sarah Osborne Hilliard
AURORA -- Sarah Leone Osborne Hilliard, 34, of Aurora died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Aurora Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hilliard was born on March 26, 1964, in Crete to Arthur and Carol (Chase) Osborne. She grew up in Merrick County and attended Central City schools. She received her General Educational Development certificate and licensed practical nursing degree from Southeast Community College in Lincoln.
She was working at Hamilton Manor in Aurora. She was involved with her son's Boy Scout troop.
Survivors include two sons, Jerami Osborne and Devin Hilliard, both of Aurora; one daughter, Jez Lewis of Aurora; four brothers, Richard Osborne of Grand Island, Dennis Osborne of York, David Osborne of Giltner and Dean Osborne of Aurora; five sisters, Suzanne (Mrs. Harley) Appel of Marysville, Kan., Docia (Mrs. Bob) Wilson of Harvard, Diane Decker of Prague, Cindy (Mrs. Mark) Behmer of Norfolk and Amy Osborne of Central City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Lucille Jensen
ST. EDWARD -- Gladys Lucille Jensen, 71, of St. Edward died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Lindsay. The Rev. David Collins will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward is in charge of arrangements.
She was born on April 11, 1927, on a farm northeast of Greeley to Elmer and Esther (Allinder) Burke. She attended country school in Greeley County, graduated from Greeley High School and attended Lutheran College at Wahoo.
She married
Eugene Jensen on Aug. 29, 1948, at Greeley. They lived in Omaha for a brief time before moving to St. Edward, where she was a housewife.
She was a member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, an active supporter of 4-H, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Educational Service Unit 7 board, Social Hour Club and Fairview Faithful Helpers Club.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Susan Reeder of Olathe, Kan., and Sonja Jensen of St. Edward; two sons, Mark and Ted, both of St. Edward; five grandchildren; one brother, LeMoine "Bud" Burke of Greeley; and three sisters, Lillian Wheeler of Crescent, Iowa, Martena Rover of San Diego and Doris Wood of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Elaine McManus.
