Ethel Smaha
Ethel L. Smaha, 88, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Smaha of Belvidere, Ill., Kenneth Smaha of Grand Island, Jon Smaha of Hickman and Michael Smaha of Greeley, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren.
Leroy Badgley
OCONTO -- Leroy Badgley, 62, of Oconto died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Oconto Community Building. The Rev. Dale Coates will officiate. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Oconto or the Oconto Fire Department and Rescue Service.
Mr. Badgley was born on Nov. 18, 1936, at Lexington to Merlin Edward and Lillie Annie (Helmuth) Badgley. He attended school in the Oconto area and graduated from Oconto High School in 1955.
He married
Arlene Lewis on May 15, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Oconto. They lived on a farm near Oconto. They later lived at Broken Bow for three years and at Lexington for four years.
They returned to Oconto in 1968, and he started a construction business. He started Badgley Hardware in 1970 and a well-repair service in 1986.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oconto, the Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Oconto Fire Department and Rescue Service, served as fire chief for many years and was an emergency medical technician. He was a member of the Custer County Sheriff's Posse and the Oconto school board and served as Oconto Village Board chairman.
His hobbies included fishing, deer hunting and farming.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin of Kearney and Clifford of Oconto; three daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Galen) Neben of Seneca, Renee (Mrs. Charlie) Gregory of Ashby and Annette Sloggett of Albuquerque, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Charlotte (Mrs. Harry) of Tucson.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and his parents.
Francis Thome
SPALDING -- Francis R. "Frank" Thome, 79, of Spalding died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding.
Visitation will be Sunday at the church with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m. Dolce Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Leonard Ziemba
COLUMBUS -- Leonard Ziemba, 69, of Columbus, formerly of Krakow, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Columbus. The Rev. Chris Grimmond will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure's cemetery with military honors by the Hartman American Legion Post 84 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 6 p.m. vigil, Thursday at McKown's Funeral Home in Columbus. Further visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ziemba was born on March 13, 1930, at Krakow to Stanley "Charlie" and Helen (Czarnick) Ziemba. He attended school at St. Stanislaus in Duncan.
He served in the U.S. Army in the military police from Oct. 10, 1951, to Oct. 28, 1953.
He married
Angie Kosinski on Feb. 23, 1957, at St. Edward's Catholic Church. He worked for Behlen Manufacturing for 36 years, retired in 1992 and continued to work there part time.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and was a church usher.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Terri (Mrs. Terry) Clausen of Columbus and Sharon (Mrs. Randy) Niemoth of Grand Island; one son, Andy Ziemba of Columbus; seven grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Ziemba of Lincoln; and a sister, Sally (Mrs. Charles) Kyle of Conway, Ark.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Hilst.
Ruby Boyll
Ruby May Boyll, 80, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Gannon will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Boyll was born on Feb. 23, 1918, at Wood River to Vernie and Elizabeth (Laue) Brown. She was raised in Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School. She lived in Wood River until 1937. She then moved to Grand Island, where she did alterations for Schweser's and Greenberger's clothing stores.
She married
Arthur L. Boyll on Oct. 6, 1937, at Grand Island. He died in March 1984.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Church Circle. She worked for the Foster Grandparents. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting and crafts.
Survivors include two sons, Walter of Kearney and William of Holdrege; two daughters, Sandy (Mrs. Garry) Rodewald of Grand Island and Linda Boyll of Holdrege; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Vernon Brown of Golden, Colo., and Bernard Brown of Omaha; and two sisters, Elizabeth Zimmerman of Idaho and Helen Bilslend of Wood River.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Oliver McCord
Oliver V.D. McCord, 79, of 1916 N. Huston died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Bremer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. McCord was born on April 17, 1919, at Bartley to Hiram and Jane (VanDorn) McCord. He moved to Grand Island as a small boy and was educated in Grand Island.
He married
Emma Yocum on April 24, 1938, in Grand Island. She died in 1976. He worked at Jack's Tire Service, Peterson and Peterson Moving Service and Roberts Dairy. He most recently owned and operated McCord's Sales and Service. He had an avid interest in fishing and camping.
Survivors include two sons, Wes McCord of Kearney and Jim McCord of Grand Island; one daughter, Cheryl (Mrs. Jerry) Grantham of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Harriete Watson of Roseberg, Ore.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three brothers and five sisters.
Donald Snyder
Donald Francis Snyder, 84, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Chapel in Alma. The Rev. Lyn Seiser will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Grand Island City cemetery with presentation of colors by Grand Island veterans organizations.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the veterans home.
Mr. Snyder was born on Jan. 4, 1914, at Hastings to Elmer E. and Bertha Mae (McCune) Snyder. He attended one year of school at Hastings before moving to Grand Island. He attended Dodge Elementary School and Barr Junior High and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1934. He worked with his father, who operated Grand Island Neon Sign Co.
He married
Doris Gene Littler on May 28, 1938, in Grand Island. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 10, 1942, at Fort Crook and served during World War II with the 255th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company. He received five battle stars for action in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was discharged on Oct. 19, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was a small arms repairman, was qualified as an expert rifleman and received the good conduct medal.
He returned to Grand Island and purchased his father's business. He went to work at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in 1955. He worked as a licensed electrician for Ensley Electric Co. in Grand Island from 1959 until his retirement in 1976. The couple moved to Republican City in November 1976. He entered the Veterans Affairs Medical Center on May 12, 1995, in Grand Island and was transferred to the Grand Island Veterans Home in November 1995.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Grand Island and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7601 and American Legion Post 361, both of Republican City. He was a former member of BPO Elks Lodge 604 and the American Legion Post, both in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife, of Republican City; his son, Steven of Grand Island; one granddaughter; and one sister, Thelma Daniel of Meadow Grove.
