Elvin Witt
Elvin F. Witt, 90, of Tiffany Square Care Center died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Tiffany Square.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Sam Rathod will officiate. Burial will be in the Juniata Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Elvin F. Witt Memorial Fund.
Mr. Witt was born on Jan. 29, 1908, in Adams County to Fred and Della (Ramsey) Witt.
He married
Hazel Maxfield on Feb. 17, 1929, in Juniata. She died on March 30, 1997. Mr. Witt was a lifetime area farmer.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was very active in bowling and horseshoes.
Survivors include two daughters, Ardyce Biede of Hastings and Ronda Bonifas of Juniata; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Brigden of San Jose, Calif.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister.
Violet Auble
CALLAWAY -- Violet M. Auble, 69, of Callaway died Sunday, July 19, 1998, in Callaway.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Tallin Church in Arnold. The Rev. Gene Purcell will officiate. Burial will be in the Garfield Table Cemetery, west of Arnold.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Arnold Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Auble was born on April 15, 1929, in a sod house in Thomas County to Harry and Lacy (Kyne) Snow. She graduated from Gandy High School in 1947.
She married
Wendell Auble on March 17, 1947, in Smith Center, Kan. She worked in the Arnold Bakery in the early 1960s and was a member of the Tallin Church in Arnold.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl (Mrs. Quentin) Yada of Grand Island; one son, Miles Auble of Dunedin, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Elma Tappan of Gandy, Norma Adams of Richland, Wash., and Donna (Mrs. Dean) Jarmin and Arlene (Mrs. Earl) Lamb, both of Emmet, Idaho; and three brothers, William of Ontario, Ore., Leslie of Montgomery, Ala., and Lynn of Emmet, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Allison; and two brothers, Wayne and Elmer Snow.
Harry Borley
HASTINGS -- Harry A. Borley, 76, of Hastings died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Hastings. The Rev. Rich Martindale will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Midlands Chapter Multiple Sclerosis or St. Mark's Episcopal Foundation.
Mr. Borley was born on Nov. 10, 1921, in Hastings to Harry Wallace and Atha (Adams) Borley. He attended schools in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School in 1939. He was activated into the U.S. Army through the Nebraska National Guard in 1939, served in the European theater and reached the rank of major.
He married
Maxine Ballinger in 1943 in Texas. He returned to Hastings in 1945 to work in the family business, Borley Storage and Transfer. He continued the business until selling it in 1982. He remained an active consultant until he retired in 1988.
Mr. Borley was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska, holding offices as junior and senior warden on the local level and various offices on the state diocesan level, Mason No. 50, Scottish Rite, Tehama Shrine, Jester, Nebraska Motor Carriers, Rotary, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, Ducks Unlimited and Lochland Country Club.
He also was past president of the Hastings Junior Chamber of Commerce, past member of the Hastings school board for 10 years and Hastings Museum board for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Jeremy) Daniels of Hastings and Sue (Mrs. Gary) Mussman of Alexandria; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Harriet (Mrs. Howard) Koepke of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
Emil Dlugosh
ORD -- Emil Dlugosh, 90, of Ord died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Mr. Dlugosh was cremated.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Additional services will be conducted by Ord Odd Fellows Lodge 90.
Memorials are suggested to the Corner Cottage or the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
James Langan
CEDAR RAPIDS -- James Henry Langan, 87, of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at his daughter's home near Cedar Rapids.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with the Rev. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will continue after 7 p.m. at the church with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Langan was born on Jan. 5, 1911, on the family farm south of Cedar Rapids. He attended District 48 School south of Cedar Rapids until the seventh grade.
He married
Margaret Gordon on June 15, 1931, in Cedar Rapids. He lived and farmed south of Cedar Rapids his entire life. His wife died in 1974.
Mr. Langan served on various community and church boards.
Survivors include three sons, Joe Langan of Atkinson, Pat Langan of Phoenix and Jerry Langan of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Mary Jane Gilroy of Cedar Rapids; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Willis Langan of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Grace Chambers of Pico Rivera, Calif., and Mildred (Mrs. Earl) Mulford of Scottsbluff.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Daniel; one daughter, Noreen; two sisters, Nellie Presher and Florence Braddock; and one infant brother, Ronald Lee.
Eugene Matheson
COMSTOCK -- Eugene Matheson, 89, of Comstock died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Murry Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in Douglas Grove cemetery at Comstock with military graveside services.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Matheson was born on April 6, 1909, on a farm east of Comstock to John and Glendora (Clark) Matheson. He attended country school and graduated from Comstock High School in 1928. After graduation, he worked on farms around the area and later as a carpenter.
He worked as a carpenter in California until he entered the Army in May 1942. He was discharged in November 1945. After his discharge, he stayed in California and worked as a carpenter. He joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and later was ordained a minister. He served in California and Nebraska.
He married
Merle Barrett North in 1968 in Ventura, Calif. They moved to Comstock in 1970. They retired, and he built his own home in Comstock.
He was a past member of the Comstock American Legion Post.
Survivors include his wife.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Higgins; a brother, Sherman Matheson; five half brothers; and five half sisters.
