Clara Glade
Clara S. Glade, 79, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Glade was born on Nov. 20, 1918, at Grand Island to Jakob and Marie (Zeiler) Scheibel. She was educated and grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1936.
She attended the Grand Island Business College. She worked for Carroll and Willard Attorneys and later at the Equitable Building and Loan Association.
She married
Henry Dixon "Dick" Glade on Jan. 14, 1939, in Kearney. The couple lived in Grand Island.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, PEO Chapter CK, Rotary Ann, Job's Daughters and the Grand Island Woman's Club. She was past president of the YWCA. She also delivered Meals on Wheels and served on the Goodwill Guild.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Karen McFarland of Grand Island and Leslie Anne Hess of Foley, Minn.; and four grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a half brother.
Edward Stenka
Edward J. Stenka, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Stenka was born on Oct. 1, 1917, in Sherman County to Frank and Gertrude (Shuda) Stenka. He grew up and attended a country school near Loup City.
He married
Wanda Lubash on July 14, 1942, in Loup City. He served in the U.S. Army as a furnace fireman at Fort Warren, Wyo., from January 1942 to May 1945. He was then transferred to Mount McCarthy, Calif., and honorably discharged on Dec. 18, 1945. He received the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
The couple farmed at Loup City from 1946 until they retired in 1972. They moved to Grand Island in 1974.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and American Legion Post 53. Mr. Stenka loved to garden and do woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, of Grand Island; two daughters, Judy Hanzel of Platte Center and Donna Gappa of Grand Island; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Teresa Glenn of Bellville, Ill., and Nellie Woitaszewski of Loup City; and one brother, Clemence Stenka of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul; two stepbrothers, Steve and Leo; and one stepsister, Bertha Moriarty.
Virgil Blue
ELM CREEK - Virgil F. Blue, 78, of Elm Creek died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Mount Carmel Nursing Home in Kearney.
Mr. Blue was cremated. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church of Elm Creek. The Rev. Dan Cleveland will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside cemetery in Gibbon.
O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney and Elm Creek is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospice Program or the Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Mary Dietz
LOUP CITY - Mary F. Dietz, 105, of Loup City died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m., with an 8 p.m. vigil service and sodality rosary, Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Rose Lane Home Chapel Fund.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Dietz was born on Dec. 9, 1892, on a farm north of Ashton to John and Julia (Kwiatkowski) Stanczyk. She attended Mount Carmel Parochial School near Paplin and the Oak Creek School near Ashton.
She farmed with her family until 1911, when the family moved to Loup City.
She married
John M. Dietz on Oct. 11, 1914, at Loup City. The couple first lived at Rockville, where they ran a harness shop. Later they moved to Ashton, where they continued in the harness business.
The couple moved in 1919 to Arcadia, where they owned and operated John Dietz Hardware. Mr. Dietz died in 1946, and Mrs. Dietz moved to Loup City to care for her father. She continued to live in her home until March 1991.
She enjoyed gardening and polka dancing. She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, its Council of Catholic Women and the rosary sodality.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Susan (Mrs. Randy) Harrison of Kearney; two great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Leona Murray; one brother, John Stanczyk; and seven sisters, Cashmir Dzingle, Helen Ignowski, Julia Stanczyk, Nellie Sawicki, Elizabeth Stanczyk, Vivian Watts and Vernie Janulewicz.
'Rudy' Schaffert
AURORA - Rudolph Fred "Rudy" Schaffert, 87, of Aurora died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. George Damm will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Schaffert was born on April 1, 1911, in Hamilton County to John and Rosina (Wagner) Schaffert. He grew up and was educated at the Brickyard School south of Aurora. He farmed with his father and later began farming on his own.
He married
Christine Miller on March 19, 1939, at the Salem Lutheran Church south of Hampton. They moved to a farm northeast of Aurora and to a farm southwest of Aurora in 1954. He moved to Colonial Corner in Aurora in 1995 and entered Hamilton Manor in Aurora in 1997.
Mr. Schaffert was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton, where he served on the building committee, in several positions on the church board and as head usher. He was a longtime member of the rural fire board.
He loved planting trees and caring for his animals.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Richard and Donald, both of Aurora, Ronald of Park Ridge, Ill., and Robert of West Lafayette, Ind.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold of Ontario, Calif., John C. of Aurora and Walter of Lincoln; and one sister, Bertha Arndt of Aurora.
Jarda Swanson
ST. PAUL - Jarda E. Swanson, 87, of St. Paul died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services are pending at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Sara Rothrock
CLAY CENTER - Sara Josephine Rothrock, infant daughter of Kevin and Trudy (Tesmer) Rothrock of Clay Center, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ in Clay Center. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Sara was born on June 4, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Survivors include her parents; a sister, Kathryn Lynn "Katy"; her grandparents, Carl and Deb Tesmer of Grand Island and Les and Cheryl Rothrock of Clay Center; and great-grandparents, Virgil and Darlene Roush, Lee Tesmer, Leah Rothrock and Clarice Tice.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Florence Tesmer; and her great-grandfathers, Quintin Rothrock and Frank Tice.
