Thomas Mooney
HASTINGS -- Thomas H. Mooney, 74, of Hastings died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings. The Rev. James J. Meysenburg will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the Hastings Catholic schools.
Mr. Mooney was born on March 23, 1924, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Charles and Hazel Marie (Spring) Mooney. He graduated from St. Cecilia's Catholic High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 3, 1943, to Jan. 21, 1946.
He married
Betty A. Hemberger on Sept. 26, 1949, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings. Mr. Mooney worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier, retiring in 1985. He had lived most of his life in Hastings.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and a past member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill of Juniata and Jim of Hastings; four daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Greg) Soucie of Hastings, Barb (Mrs. Jeff) Fern of Grand Island, Cindy Luna of Lincoln and Beth (Mrs. Tony) Maul of Westminster, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; one step grandchild; one brother, Chuck Mooney of Penn Valley, Calif.; and one sister, Mary Hemberger of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Ley.
Adnelle Oakeson
ST. PAUL -- Adnelle H. Oakeson, 93, of St. Paul died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Laura Bartels will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
There will be no visitation. Jacobsen Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church, St. Paul Library Foundation or the St. Paul emergency medical technicians.
Mrs. Oakeson was born on March 23, 1905, at St. Paul to Edward and Florence (Baker) Hoover. She was educated in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1923.
She marred Emerson Baker, and the couple lived at Havelock. She returned to St. Paul, where she first worked in the Howard County District Court as a secretary. She later worked for the Citizen Bank and the St. Paul National Bank.
She married
Edward Paulsen on Jan. 23, 1954, at Broken Bow. They lived in St. Paul. Mr. Paulsen died on April 21, 1977. She continued to live in St. Paul.
She married
Oscar Oakeson on Sept. 9, 1979, at St. Paul. The couple lived on the Oakeson farm in the Fairdale area north of St. Paul. They moved to St. Paul in 1982. Mr. Oakeson died on Dec. 10, 1993. She continued to live in St. Paul.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of St. Paul, Andrew Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Grand Island and Chapter AP PEO of St. Paul.
Survivors include one daughter, Florence (Mrs. Donald) Deininger of Elba; three stepsons, Gerald and Dwayne Oakeson, both of Sun City, Ariz., and Gary Oakeson of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; three grandsons; a number of step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of step great-grandchildren.
Sophia Thies
ORD -- Sophia Thies, 90, of Ord died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Thies was born on Oct. 28, 1908, on a farm north of Arcadia to James and Pauline (Pierszalska) Wozniak. She was educated at District 16 School in Valley County and then attended a commercial business college in Scottsbluff. She spent her entire working career as a secretary, which included work at Gering High School.
She married
Lamere Dworak in April 1934. Mr. Dworak died in August 1938 in Hays, Kan.
Four years later, she married
Arnold Thies of Gering. Mr. Thies died in 1984. Mrs. Thies moved to Ord in 1984 and lived at Parkview Village.
She was a member of the Ord United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Cash Wozniak of Ord; and three sisters, Anna Bartu, Viola Howarter and Marguerite Swanson, all of Ord.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Frank; and five sisters, Fern Wozniak, Maxine Edwards, Vonda Boulay, Josie Wozniak and Laura Comstock.
Nina Andrews
ARAPAHOE -- Nina Elsie Andrews, 91, of Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at the center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge. The Rev. Art Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery at Cambridge.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe or Holbrook Baptist Church.
Mrs. Andrews was born on Feb. 12, 1907, in Cambridge to William and Eliza (Box) Baker. She attended a school north of Cambridge for two years and the Blacktop School northeast of Cambridge for three years. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1924.
She married
Donald Clark Andrews on Dec. 30, 1929, at Cambridge. They lived on the Andrews family farm southwest of Holbrook until they retired and moved into Holbrook in 1965. Her husband died on July 7, 1989, as they were preparing to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. She continued living in Holbrook until moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe in 1995.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church at Cambridge and had attended the Baptist Church of Holbrook.
She was a charter member of the local J.U.G. Club for many years, B-Square, Holbrook Women's Club and the Holbrook Baptist Women's Club. She was an enthusiastic supporter of all school activities.
Survivors include three sons, Donald of Holbrook, Robert of Cambridge and Roger of Grand Island; one daughter, Mary Alice (Mrs. Ronald) McPhee of Inverary, Ontario, Canada; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel McKillip of California.
She was preceded in death by one son, Richard; four brothers, Ansel, Walter, Robert and Francis; four sisters, Lena Stahl, Edith McKillip, Grace Newcomb and Dorothy Bible; and three half brothers, Edward and Albert and a younger brother.
Erma Johnson
SARGENT -- Erma B. Johnson, 102, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Johnson was born on June 24, 1895, in Custer County to James Washington and Jane Anna (George) Huffaker. She grew up south of Broken Bow and attended country school.
She married
R. Clair Johnson on June 7, 1921, at Casper, Wyo. They lived at Casper until 1929, when they moved back to Nebraska to the Westerville area. They later moved to the Ansley, Broken Bow and Westerville areas. They ran a grocery store in Broken Bow and a couple in Merna.
She moved to Sargent in 1971 and lived with her daughter and son-in-law until 1993, when she moved into the Sargent Nursing Center.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Casper, Wyo. She was a lifetime American Legion member in Merna and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary member in Broken Bow.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Seevers of Sargent; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and five step great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son-in-law Gene Seevers; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Paul Kowalski
ST. PAUL -- Paul L. Kowalski, 65, of St. Paul died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul and will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service and Knights of Columbus rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Kowalksi was born on Oct. 20, 1932, on a farm south of St. Paul to Gregory A. and Monica E. (Augustine) Kowalski. He was educated at Howard County Rural District 16 School. Upon completing his education, he farmed with his family.
He served in the U.S. Army from March 12, 1953, to March 11, 1955. Upon his discharge, he returned to the farm and worked for Fayette Manufacturing of Grand Island for many years.
He moved into St. Paul in 1985 and worked for Mel's Service of Dannebrog until 1992. He suffered a stroke in May 1993 and moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home on Aug. 31, 1993.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bingo.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1918 and Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119, all of St. Paul.
Survivors include two brothers, Lawrence A. Kowalski and Anton G. Kowalski, both of St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Alois Kowalski; and one sister, Evelyn Knapp.
