Charles Thomas
Charles F. Thomas, 74, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Lemons will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Thomas was born May 27, 1924, at Franklin, Penn. He grew up and attended school in Franklin. He entered the U.S. Army in August 1942, serving until October 1945.
After the service, he moved to Grand Island and worked as a delivery driver. He then worked as an over-the-road driver, then did construction work.
He married
June Packard on Oct. 30, 1951, at Grand Island.
He enjoyed doing many handyman projects.
He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and American Legion Post 300 in Doniphan.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Lynn) Gallagher of San Bernadino, Calif. and Linda (Mrs. Elmer) Honeycutt of Argonia, Kan.; one brother and two sisters.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Ida Heil
LOUP CITY -- Ida D. Heil, 97, of Loup City died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Revs. Heidi Revelo and Douglas Deneui will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. Memorials are suggested to Rose Lane Chapel, United Methodist Church or the family.
Mrs. Heil was born April 21, 1901, to Charles John and Amelia (Anderson) Larson on a farm northwest of Loup City. She grew up and attended school in Loup City, graduating in 1921.
She married
Lee Heil on Sept. 22, 1925, in St. Paul. They farmed south of Loup City. He died in September 1968. She retired in 1972 and moved to Westside Park in Loup City.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens at Westside Park, Alpha Nu Club, Leah Methodist Circle, United Methodist Women and County Senior Citizens, serving as secretary and treasurer.
She received several plaques for her volunteer work and awards from State Farm Bureau. She received an award from Ak-Sar-Ben in 1982.
She enjoyed holding many offices in her clubs and Senior Citizens.
Survivors include four sons, John Leo and Wilbur Ray Heil, both of Rockville, Marvin and Lloyd Heil, both of Loup City; one daughter, Maxine Dick of Aurora; 15 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Oscar and Fred Larson and a half brother, Henry Horstman.
Shirley Maxson
CENTRAL CITY -- Shirley Ann Maxson, 57, of Central City died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City after a two year battle with cancer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Rollie Salts will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Solt Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Christian Church or Litzenberg Hospital.
Mrs. Maxson was born Aug. 24, 1940, to James Arthur and Libbie Ann (Bartos) Mach in Burwell. She was raised in Burwell where she graduated from Burwell High School in 1957. She then attended Norfolk Christian Center for one year.
She married
Eldon Lee Maxson on Aug. 31, 1958, in Burwell. They lived in the Burwell area until late 1969 and moved to Central City in January 1970. She was primarily a homemaker, but did work at the local Dairy Queen for 13 years. She did child care for a number of years during this time also.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, birdwatching, flower gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a life member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Byron Maxson of Kearney; two daughters, Shelly (Mrs. Ron) Dankert of Central City and Lori (Mrs. John) Fritz of Fullerton; her parents, James and Libbie Mach of Burwell; two brothers, Kenneth Mach of Papillion and Edwin Mach of Kearney and five grandchildren.
Lena Hansen
COLUMBUS -- Lena Hansen, 98, of Columbus, formerly of Silver Creek, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Osceola.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McKown Funeral Home in Silver Creek. The Rev. Larry Biederman will officiate. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home until service time.
Mrs. Hansen was born Dec. 26, 1899, to Andrew and Marie (Hugh) Meyer in Platte County.
She married
William G. "Bill" Hansen on Sept. 21, 1928. She lived and farmed near Silver Creek before moving to Columbus.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Silver Creek.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley M. Schmidt of Columbus; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Fred Meyer of Genoa and one sister, Margaret Garig of LeMesa, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandsons, one brother and two sisters.
Bill Peterson
Bill Peterson, 88, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Mr. Peterson will be cremated.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church or College Park.
Ethel Smaha
Ethel L. Smaha, 88, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Smaha was born on Dec. 4, 1910, at Grand Island to E. Lee and Maude (Kerns) Cottingham. She lived in Grand Island and moved to Ravenna in 1923. She graduated from Ravenna High School.
She married
Levi Smaha on Oct. 17, 1934, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Ravenna. They moved to Grand Island in 1956. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Smaha was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Smaha of Belvidere, Ill., Kenneth Smaha of Grand Island, Jon Smaha of Hickman and Michael Smaha of Greeley, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
