Wayne Baker
ST. EDWARD -- Walter Wayne Baker, 89, of St. Edward died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Heritage of David City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. The Rev. Ken Rood will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
Mr. Baker was born on Oct. 28, 1909, near Fairfax, Mo., to Walter H. and Genevieve Pearl (Margerum) Baker. When he was 9 years old, the family moved to a farm near Albion. He was educated in Boone County schools.
He married
Vera Condreay on Nov. 25, 1930, in Sidney, Iowa. They lived and farmed in Boone County and moved to their current farm home in 1945. He was a grain farmer and raised livestock.
Mr. Baker was champion of the last Boone County Corn Husking Bee in 1940.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and reading during retirement years.
Survivors include one son, Larry of St. Edward; one daughter, Lucy (Mrs. Dale) Cooper of David City; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; five brothers, Chet of Paris, Calif., Kenneth of Hastings, Don and Melvin, both of St. Edward, and Darrell of Austin, Colo.; and two sisters, Una Mae Mayhew and Dorothy Cannon, both of Kingman, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers, Leonard, George, Firman and Willis.
Genevieve Hurt
BOELUS -- Genevieve O. Hurt, 76, of Boelus died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Rob Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in the Czechoslovakia cemetery at Farwell.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Hurt was born on Sept. 9, 1922, at Farwell to John and Mary (Siegel) Sidel. She attended rural school near Farwell and grew up on the family farm. She later attended high school in Farwell.
She married
Richard Hurt on Aug. 30, 1941, at St. Paul. The couple first farmed near Farwell and later moved to a farm south of Boelus. She worked as a cook and waitress for the Boelus Lounge. She later worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, as a custodian for the grade school at Boelus and for Centura Public Schools. She retired in May 1991.
The couple moved from the farm into Boelus in 1986. Mr. Hurt died on Dec. 6, 1995.
Mrs. Hurt's hobbies were fishing, air boating, playing cards, bingo and gardening.
Survivors include three sons, Eugene and Jerald Hurt, both of Boelus, and Raynold Hurt of Dannebrog; two daughters, Darlene Dodd of Grand Island and Delores (Mrs. Harlan) Stutzman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Margaret Pogorelski of Ravenna, Velma Nesiba of Puyallup, Wash., Irene (Mrs. Steven) Kizior of Farwell and Erma Kalinowski of Cairo.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Ann; three brothers, Ernest, John and Steven; and one sister, Anna.
Leona Jensen
AURORA -- Leona Gertrude Jensen, 76, of Aurora died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in a Lincoln hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. John Keefe will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Jensen was born on April 20, 1922, at Cedar Rapids to Fred and Julia (Van DeWalle) Strotman. She grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. Following graduation, she worked at Hamilton County Farm Seed Co.
She married
Eugene Jensen on April 18, 1942, at Aurora. They lived in Tilden for a year and then moved back to Aurora, where they farmed. They purchased the Frontier Cafe and Station in 1965. She opened the cafe in 1974 and ran it until February 1999. Mr. Jensen died on May 8, 1978.
Mrs. Jensen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora and the Altar Society.
Survivors include one son, Richard of Aurora; one daughter, Julie (Mrs. Dan) Newman of Aurora; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Strotman of Grand Island; and one sister, Bethel Kolar of Aurora.
Earl Morris
FULLERTON -- Earl H. Morris, 94, of Fullerton died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the Fullerton Manor.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Morris was born on April 27, 1904, in Dixon, Ill., to Luther E. and Lula A. (Phillips) Morris. He moved with his family to Nebraska in 1913. He attended Nance County Rural District 67 School.
He started a Harley-Davidson motorcycle shop in Columbus in 1930 and moved his shop to Grand Island in 1931. He also delivered The Grand Island Independent by motorcycle to small towns to the east and north from 1931 to 1942 in summer and winter.
He married
Hazel Stott on June 11, 1932, at the North Star Church at North Star.
They sold their Harley-Davidson business in 1942 and moved to Anaheim, Calif., where he worked for Douglas Aircraft. He was disabled in an accident and moved back to Fullerton in 1981. Mrs. Morris died on Nov. 12, 1981. Mr. Morris entered the Fullerton Manor in 1995.
Survivors include two brothers, Lee of Anaheim, Calif., and Harold of Palmer; and one sister, Grace Collins of Friend.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ray, Roland, Vernon and Robert; and two sisters, May Schomburg and an infant sister, Bessie.
'Frank' Thome
SPALDING -- Francis R. "Frank" Thome, 79, of Spalding died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Sunday at the church. Dolce Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thome was born on Nov. 30, 1919, to Robert Jr. and Mary (McGan) Thome of Akron. He attended District 60 School in Boone County.
After the eighth grade, he worked with his father until entering the U.S. Navy in August 1941. He attended Navy training at the Great Lakes training center and served on the USS Tennessee.
He married
Maxine Rosso on Dec. 13, 1944, in Lincoln while still on active duty. He returned home in October 1945 and farmed until retiring in 1983, when he turned the family farm over to his son.
He enjoyed sports and playing cards.
He was a member of St. Michael's Men's Club and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Dianne McDuffee of Omaha; four sons, Dennis of Omaha, Robert of Omaha and William and David, both of Spalding; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret (Mrs. John) Kaiser of Spalding.
Terri Ann Dent
DAYTON, Wyo. -- Terri Ann Dent, 43, of Dayton, Wyo., formerly of the Burwell/Sargent area, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Sheridan County Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent. The Rev. Walter Collins will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rhoads Funeral Home in Sargent.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Wanda Jacobsen
AURORA -- Wanda Jacobsen, 101, of Aurora and formerly of Marquette, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kronborg with the Revs. Anna White-Terman and Charles Pollard officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the church or at the donor's choice.
