Karl Tews
Karl F. Tews, 91, of 404 Woodland Drive died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Rev. Harold D. Stromer will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Further visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Tews was born on Nov. 9, 1906, in Cammin, Pommern, Germany, to August and Elsie (Bremer) Tews. He was educated in Cammin, Pommern, Germany. He came to the United States in September 1923.
He married
Bella Kalberg on Sept. 18, 1931, at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.
Mr. Tews was a retired Hastings businessman who owned and operated Stop and Shop for many years. He was involved with the meat business all his adult life until retiring in 1966.
The couple moved to Riverside Lodge in Grand Island in 1989.
He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a life member of the Hastings Elk Lodge and past member of the Hastings YMCA.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Lillian (Mrs. Leroy) Sprague of Grand Island; one son, K. Richard Tews of Redding, Calif.; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Richard Tews of Burgsinn, Germany.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Kurt Tews.
'Connie' Voorhees
Camilla A. "Connie" Voorhees, 83, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Libory's Catholic Church. The Rev. David Rykwalder will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Foster Grandparents Program.
Mrs. Voorhees was born on June 11, 1915, at Grand Island to Camillo and Maude (O'Brien) Niemann. She grew up and attended school in Grand Island.
She married
Floyd Voorhees on Aug. 25, 1932, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. She worked as a cook at St. Mary's School, as a clerk for Hested's Department Store and later for Ace Hardware.
She was a member of St. Libory's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Third Order of St. Francis.
She enjoyed sewing and gardening. She also volunteered as a foster grandparent until 1996, when she moved to Park Place.
Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Niemann of Grand Island and Richard Niemann of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one sister, Catherine Niemann of Cheyenne, Wyo.
Her husband in 1990. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Niemann; and one sister, Delores Swett.
Florene Borgelt
ERICSON -- Florene Borgelt, 71, of Ericson died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Integrated Health Services in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The Revs. Frank Maurer and Richard Tino will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery in Norfolk.
Home for Funerals in Norfolk is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Borgelt was born on April 28, 1927, at Hoskins to Gustav and Emma (Kruger) Gall. She attended rural school near Madison and Madison High School.
She married
Lawrence Borgelt on Sept. 1, 1946, at Norfolk. They lived at Battle Creek, Grand Island, Ord and Ericson. She was an Avon representative for 18 years while she lived in Grand Island.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Bartlett and was a member of an extension club while she lived in Grand Island.
Survivors include her husband; one son, the Rev. Larry Borgelt of Fall Creek, Wis.; one daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Jim) Lantis of Sutherland; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Elmer Gall of Norfolk; and three sisters, Ruth Volk of Omaha, Elaine Marr of Norfolk and Jean Woockman of Stanton.
Maxine Bourland
AURORA -- Twila Maxine Bourland, 74, of Aurora died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at an Omaha hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora First Christian Church. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Bourland was born on June 18, 1924, at Broken Bow to DeWitt De and Grace Armina (Pirnie) Bowley.
She married
William Rex Bourland on May 14, 1943, at Broken Bow. They lived at Broken Bow. The family moved to Crete in 1961. She became the dietary cook for the Crete hospital for the next six years. They next moved to Aurora, where Mrs. Bourland retired and was a housewife. When her husband retired, they wintered in Arizona.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora and the Aurora Women's Club. She was past president of the Christian Church Circle and the Legion Auxiliary. She did volunteer work with the hospital auxiliary. She was also a golfer and on the 55 Senior Citizens Bowling League.
Survivors include two daughters, Dianna De Myers of Lafayette, Tenn., and Pamela Jean Ried of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband died on July 3, 1987.
Thomas Jensen
HASTINGS -- Thomas Britt Jensen, 87, of Hastings died Monday, July 13, 1998, at the Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell. The Rev. David Koenisberg will officiate.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Jensen was born on Oct. 30, 1910, in Burwell to John and Ora (Hoppes) Jensen.
He married
Ethel Nixon in Burwell. He moved to Hastings in 1955 from Grand Island. He worked for Gene Watts in Deweese and H&M; Equipment in Hastings. Mrs. Jensen died in 1981. Mr. Jensen moved to the Blue Hill Care Center in April 1998.
He was a member of the Eagles.
Survivors include two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Kate Ward of Mount Shasta, Calif., and Hila Elliott of Manteca, Calif.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Dean Jensen; one granddaughter, four brothers and two sisters.
Wilma Thomson
BURWELL -- Wilma Jean Thomson, 70, of Burwell died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Community Memorial Health Center.
She was born on July 15, 1927, at Stuart to John and Bertha (Ehrsam) Thomson. When she was 9 years old, the family moved to Marquette and then to Taylor, where they lived on a ranch. She attended country school through the eighth grade. She later moved into town and then into Parkview Plaza at Burwell in 1967.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and attended Sunday afternoon church services at the Community Memorial Health Center.
She collected salt and pepper shakers. She enjoyed flowers, bingo, crafts and read when able.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Melania Thomson of Archer; one niece, Marcella (Mrs. Joe) Bstandig of Columbus; and one nephew, Mike Thomson of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and an infant brother, William.
