Valvin Zachry
Valvin E. Zachry, 78, of Grand Island died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1988 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Odd Fellows Lodge or St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Joseph Bonne
ORD -- Joseph J. Bonne, 90, of rural Ord died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospital and Nursing Home or the St. Mary's School at Ord.
Mr. Bonne was born April 16, 1907, west of David City in Butler County to Emiel and Emilie (Pieters) Bonne. He attended the Marietta Parochial School near David City. He moved with his family to Valley County in 1919. He graduated from country school in Valley County.
He married
Ellen Emily Smolik on June 3, 1935, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in the Geranium Township of Valley County. They lived on rented farms until they moved to a farm southwest of Ord.
Mrs. Bonne died Oct. 9, 1992. He entered the Valley County Nursing Home in June 1996.
He was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Richard Bonne of Ord; two daughters, Mary Ellen Setlik of Ord and Geraldine Thompson of Plano, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alfons Bonne of Ord; and two sisters, Mary Mettenbrink of Grand Island and Margaret Potrzeba of Hastings.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice; and an infant great-grandson.
Gust Foth
ORD -- Gust Foth, 86, of Ord died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mira Valley Evangelical united Methodist Church. The Rev. Murry Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist church.
Mr. Foth was born May 11, 1911, south of Ord in the Mira Valley area to Gustav and Anna (Boesler) Foth. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at Midvale rural School District No. 15. He farmed with his father.
He married
Agnes Lechecka on Oct. 6, 1937, at Broken Bow. They lived on the Foth home place where they farmed and ranched until 1981, when they moved into Ord.
He was a member of the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church and had served as a trustee for the church. He was a member of the Ord International Order of Odd Fellows. He had served on the organization committee for the Ord Senior Center.
He enjoyed cards and checkers and was a member of the Neighborhood Card Group.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gust Foth Jr. of Aurora, Colo,. and Gordon Foth of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bertha Stone of Las Cruces, N.M.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Bieberdorf, Erna Smith and Frieda DeJung; one infant sister; two brothers, Leroy Foth and Alvin Foth; two infant brothers and one grandson.
Donald Jensen
AXTELL -- Donald R. Jensen, 66, of Axtell died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at his home in Axtell.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell. The Rev. Helmut Yurk will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Axtell with military rites by the Minden American Legion Post No. 94..
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Freeland-Layton Funeral Home at Axtell.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Mr. Jensen was born June 6, 1931, at Upland to James W. and Emma I. (Faber) Jensen.
The family moved to Campbell, where he attended school through the eighth grade at which time they moved to Minden. He attended Minden school through the 11th grade and graduated from Holstein High School in May 1949.
After graduation, he worked for various farmers in the Minden/Axtell area. In 1950, he began working full time for Herbert Oline at Axtell until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1952.
He served with the battery B Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion at Karlsruhe, Germany, for 18 months and was discharged in December 1953. After returning home, he resumed his job with Oline.
On Jan. 10, 1954, he married
Mary Jane Hansen at Hildreth. They lived at Axtell where Mr. Jensen continued to work for Oline for several years. He then went to work at the Mobile Station and continued on there after they sold out to the co-op.
He worked at the station until 1968, when he went to work in Holdrege servicing appliances for Andy's Farm and Home Store and then Gambles after Andy's sold the business.
He was employed by the Village of Axtell for 16 years and then took a job with the K K Appliance in Holdrege until March 1994. He was forced to retire due to heart surgery, working only part time for Steve's Sanitation of Axtell for a few months. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in May 1996.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Dixie (Mrs. Steve) Jackson of Heartwell, Pam (Mrs. Chris) Becker of Alma, Lynette (Mrs. Richard) Verbeck of Axtell and Gayleen (Mrs. Brad) Moeller of Aurora; one son, Cory Jensen of Minden; seven grandchildren; one sister, Verdell Jones of Independence, Mo.; and one brother, James E. Jensen of Upland.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Fern Kuhn
LOUP CITY -- Fern I, Kuhn, 92, of Loup City died Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Bible Church in Loup City. The Revs. Curtis W. Roberts and Darrell Holzinger will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Peters Funeral home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the church or family's choice.
Mrs. Kuhn was born June 19, 1905, at Gresham to Gene and Clara (Elliott) Bennett. As a child, she moved with her family to Scottsbluff, later moving to Litchfield, where she graduated from Litchfield High School in 1925. Upon completing her education, she worked at Nordlings Variety Store in Litchfield.
She married
Ray Kuhn on Sept. 18, 1928, at Ravenna. The couple farmed west of Loup City until 1957, when they moved to Lincoln. She worked at Gold's which later became Brandeis Stores until 1976, when the couple retired and moved back to Loup City. Mr. Kuhn died Jan. 2, 1990.
She moved to Westside Park in Loup City until May 1997, when she moved to the Rose Lane home.
She was a charter member of the Grace Bible Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn (Mrs. John) Larson of Lincoln; one son, Ron Kuhn of Loup City; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Currey of Litchfield.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Bennett; two sisters, Opal Curry and Alma Bennett; one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
Gretchen Wells
SARGENT -- Gretchen Wells, 86, of Sargent died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the Gates cemetery west of Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Wells was born Jan. 16, 1912, to Venus Charles and Jess Belle (Brown) Prettyman at Comstock. She attended rural schools near Comstock and graduated from Sargent High School in 1929.
On June 5, 1933, she married
Frank W. Wells at the Methodist Church in Scottsbluff. They lived on a farm by Walworth west of Sargent until her husband had a car accident in 1962 and he quit farming.
In 1967, she started a fabric and gift shop in Sargent until she retired at the age of 62. She lived above her shop and later moved to her present home in Sargent. Mr. Wells died in 1982.
She spent some time traveling which included a trip to Europe. She enjoyed music, crocheting and dolls.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Sargent and Does Lodge of Broken Bow.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Dick) Leibert of Sargent, Gaylene (Mrs. Clifford) Olson of Sargent and Vicki (Mrs. Chuck) McCarty of North Platte; one son, Reid Wells of Fairfield; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vera Sleeger of Casper, Wyo.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles; and a granddaughter.
