Frances Czuba
COLUMBUS -- Frances K. Czuba of Columbus, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at St. Joseph's Villa at David City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Duncan. The Rev. Anthony Espinosa will officiate. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus cemetery at Duncan.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at McKown Funeral Home at Columbus and after 6 p.m. at the church with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to donor's choice.
Mrs. Czuba was born at Cedar Rapids to Andrew and Clara (Niedbalski) Volnek Sr. She attended school and grew up in Cedar Rapids. Before her marriage, she worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus as an aide.
She married
Louis Czuba on May 7, 1940, at Cedar Rapids. After her marriage, she moved to the farm at Columbus. She cleaned the Country Club Inn and worked for D & L for 20 years.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and St. Ann's Sodality.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Keith) Barg of Norfolk, Mary (Mrs. Larry) Cook of Fremont, Darlene (Mrs. Larry) Elston of Omaha, Dee (Mrs. Lynn) Hasselbach-Artz of Kearney and JoAnn (Mrs. Paul) Kozak of Columbus; one son, Phillip Czuba of Columbus; three sisters, Margaret Bosak of Genoa, Virginia (Mrs. Frank) Knwinski of Silver Creek and Patricia (Mrs. Robert) Parry of Columbus; four brothers, Andrew Volnek, Mike Volnek and Pete Volnek, all of Columbus, and Frank Volnek of Arlington; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and one infant sister.
Bernard Dunning
Bernard "Mercy" Dunning, 86, of Grand Island died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. James Whalen and Martin Egging will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary, Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Dunning was born on Oct. 24, 1911, at Spalding to John P. and Margaret (Higgins) Dunning. He grew up and attended school in Spalding. He worked in the Spalding area for a short time.
He then moved to Grand Island, where he began working as a truck driver for the Donald Co., which later became O.P. Skaggs. He then drove for the Ulry-Talbert Co. and the Gamble-Robinson Co.
He married
Agnes Whalen on July 29, 1940, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. After Mr. Dunning was injured in an accident in 1973 and could no longer drive a truck, he worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. for several years.
He enjoyed gardening and working in his lawn.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Platt-Duetsche, Eagles and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Donald, Jerry and Tom Dunning, all of Grand Island; three daughters, Anna Marie Kuhn of Norfolk, Patty Stein of Mesa, Ariz., and Mary Dunning of Grand Island; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Donald, John and Frank Dunning; and two sisters, Mary Dunning and Frances Pritchard.
Louis Grein
Louis J. Grein, 81, of 610 N. Darr died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Vernon Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Julia Nitsch
Julia J. "Judy" Nitsch, 76, of Grand Island, formerly of the Boelus area, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Boelus. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery near Boelus.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Miss Nitsch was born on Oct. 13, 1921, near Boelus to William and Inger (Enevoldsen) Nitsch. She was raised near Boelus and attended District 25 School north of Boelus.
She moved to Grand Island, where she worked as a housekeeper, and then moved to Denver, where she attended the Denver School of Cosmetology. She moved to Minneapolis, where she owned the Lords and Ladies Beauty Shop.
She moved in 1965 to Santa Monica, Calif., where she was a beautician until 1993, when ill health forced her retirement. She moved to the Oceanville Convalescence Home in Santa Monica and to Lakeview in Grand Island in July 1997.
Her hobbies included music, dancing and painting. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Victor Nitsch of Rockville and Clarence Nitsch of Boelus.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Julius, Edward and Rudolph Nitsch.
'Val' Zachry
Valvin E. "Val" Zachry, 78, of Grand Island died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Odd Fellows Lodge or St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Mr. Zachry was born on June 15, 1919, at Merna to Nidgal and Naomi (Duryea) Zachry. He grew up and was educated at Grand Island and graduated in 1939. He began working for the Union Pacific Railroad in the clerk's department in Grand Island in June 1939.
He married
Alice D. Aspinall on Dec. 15, 1943, at Smith Center, Kan. The couple lived in Grand Island. He was promoted to the transportation department as a brakeman on May 25, 1941, and promoted to conductor on March 15, 1950. The couple moved to North Platte in 1972, and he continued to work as a conductor. They returned to Grand Island in 1977, and he worked as a conductor until retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Odd Fellows Lodge 22, Masonic Friendship Lodge 239 of Chapman, Elks Lodge, Golden Eagle, Platt-Duetsche, Rebekah Lodge, Union Pacific Old-Timers Club 16 and United Transportation Union 286.
Survivors include two brothers, Nelse Zachry of Grand Island and Marion Zachry of North Platte.
His wife died in 1988.
Sharon Schleichardt
CHAPMAN -- Sharon K. Schleichardt, 56, of Chapman died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Fred Weiss will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Schleichardt was born on Sept. 9, 1941, at Juniata to Ken and Helen (Bachman) Sample. She grew up and was educated in Juniata. After graduation, she was a waitress in Minden.
She married
Gene Schleichardt on Oct. 9, 1972, in Hastings. They lived in Grand Island. She worked at Skagway, Jack & Jill and Econo Foods in the deli and snack bar. She also worked for the American Heart Association.
The couple moved to Chapman in 1980. She received her degree in dietetics in 1994 from Central Community College in Hastings. At the time of her death, she worked at Lebensraum Retirement Home and Kmart.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Lonnie J. of Grand Island; one daughter, Robyn (Mrs. Jeremy) Welch of Grand Island; her father, of Alda; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Kenneth Sample of Pueblo, Colo., Don Sample of Great Bend, Kan., and Roger Sample of Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother, Ron.
