Larry Forbes
PALMER -- Larry R. Forbes, 47, of Palmer died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Revs. Mike McDermott and Delano Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at the Rose Hill cemetery at Palmer. Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer and from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church with a 7 p.m. scripture service.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Forbes was born on Dec. 17, 1950, at Palmer to Robert and Wynona Forbes. He was educated at Glenwood Country School and Fullerton High School, graduating in 1969. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1973, with a degree in animal science. He farmed and ranched near Palmer.
He married
Marcia Kotlarz on Aug. 27, 1988, at Fullerton. They continued to ranch near Palmer.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Nebraska Cattlemen's Association, Touchdown Club and the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.
He enjoyed Nebraska football, nature and raising cattle.
Survivors include his wife of Palmer; one son, Dustin and a daughter, Elizabeth, both at home; his parents, Robert and Wynona Forbes of Palmer; two sisters, Ardythe (Mrs. Wayne) Moeller of Palmer and Sandra (Mrs. Steve) Leininger of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Mary McAfee
FULLERTON -- Mary McAfee, 82, of Fullerton died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. McAfee was born on June 21, 1915, at Boone County to Thomas and Amanda (Brown) Loftus. She was educated at rural schools in Boone and Nance Counties.
She married
Marvin McAfee on July 20, 1940, at Columbus. They lived in Iowa for a year and returned to Fullerton in 1943. They leased Clara's Cafe for one year. She was instrumental in starting the school lunch program in Fullerton and worked at Fullerton Public Schools for several years.
She enjoyed reading, cooking and her family.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Women's Club, Legion Auxiliary, Afternoon Circle, Eastern Star and the Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mary Eileen (Mrs. Darrell) Smith of Sterling, Colo., and Carol (Mrs. Kevin) Kacer of Naples, Fla; two grandchildren; one brother, Charles Loftus of Cincinatti, Ohio; and one sister, Lola Reed of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Art, Tom, Elmer, Roy and an infant brother, and two sisters, Eda Whitney and Frances McIntyre.
Edna Bennett
ARCADIA -- Edna Bennett, 85, of Arcadia died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Arcadia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Murry Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia Rescue Unit or to the Arcadia United Methodist Church.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Genevieve O'Meara
BROKEN BOW -- Genevieve O'Meara, 88, of Broken Bow died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Maresh officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. There will be a 7:30 p.m. rosary Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. O'Meara was born on Sept. 24, 1909, to Frank and Sarah (Lepant) Kinish in Omaha. She was educated at District 79, then worked as an elementary teacher for 43 years.
She married
Francis O'Meara on June 2, 1962, at Anselmo. He died in March 1963.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, many state and local teacher's organizations, Secular Franciscan Order, Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and reading.
Survivors include many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, the Rev. David Kinish and Vincent Kinish, and one sister, Sr. Mary Rose Kinish.
Dwain Bartu
ORD -- Dwain Bartu, 67, of Ord died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at his home in Ord.
Services are pending with the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Hazel Schmidt
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Hazel L. Schmidt, 97, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died Jan. 22, 1998, at a nursing home in Colorado Springs.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper will officiate.
Memorial services were held Jan. 31 at the Sunrise United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. The Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs, Colo. was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Schmidt was born Dec. 2, 1900, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa to James and Ida (Roberts) Kirk.
On April 2, 1919, she married
Harry G. Schmidt. She was a retired grocery store owner.
Survivors include one son, Gale Schmidt of Colorado Springs; one daughter of Colorado; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Althea Thorpe
Althea M. Thorpe, 81, of 415 West Ave. in Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Eric Ford will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Thorpe was born April 30, 1917, in Colorado to Andrew and Ada (Carey) Hisel. She lived with her family in Colorado, Oklahoma and Sheridan, Ore., where she completed her education and graduated from high school.
She married
John Thorpe on June 1, 1938, at Tillamook, Ore. They moved to rural Nebraska in 1945, then to Grand Island in 1952. Mrs. Thorpe worked for many years in central services at St. Francis Medical Center, retiring in 1984. Mr. Thorpe died in 1964.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three children, Ellen L. Schritt of Grand Island, Stan Thorpe of Lincoln and Judy Meyer of Cantonment, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Elmore; and a daughter, Carole Johnson.
Jim Amsberry
ANSLEY -- Jim Amsberry, 63, of Ansley died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at his rural home
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ansley Christian Church. The Rev. Jim Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Cattleman's Ball of Nebraska for cancer research or the Ansley Volunteer Fire Department.
Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Amsberry was born Dec. 17, 1934, near Ansley to Rollie and Sadie (Holm) Amsberry. He spent his entire life in the Ansley area, where he farmed and ranched with this wife and children. He attended grade school at Algernon and graduated from Ansley High School in 1952.
In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in November 1957. During his military years, he was stationed at Cheyenne, Wyo.; Tampa, Fla.; Merced, Calif.; and spent one year in Thule, Greenland.
On June 20, 1954, he married
Marylin Stahl at Ansley.
Mr. Amsberry was a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge No. 1688 and the Ansley American Legion Post 153. His hobbies included fishing and hunting, and he was an avid Nebraska football fan. He enjoyed spending time with and teasing his grandchildren and was involved in his children's and grandchildren's 4-H, school and sports activities. He enjoyed family farming, feeding cattle and the hog-buying business, and the friendships he made through the livestock business.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rollie "Skip" of Mason City, Gary and Rodney of Ansley; a daughter, Janell (Mrs. Jeff) Stunkel of Ansley; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers and an infant sister.
