Vera Sanford
Vera Mae Sanford, 85, of Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Joseph S. Chapman will officiate. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Sanford was born on Dec. 16, 1912, to Edward H. and Sylvia Mae (Moore) Fifield of Eldorado. She was raised and educated in Harvard and Deweese.
She married
Duane Adams in June 1929 at Geneva. The couple lived in Edgar and numerous other Nebraska towns. She sold advertising and was a bookkeeper for a newspaper in Oklahoma.
She later married
Everett Sanford.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by both husbands and eight brothers and sisters.
Raymond Anderson
AURORA -- Raymond Eugene Anderson, 79, of Aurora died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Aurora First Christian Church. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Anderson was born on Jan. 21, 1919, at Aurora to Andrew and Emma (Akerson) Anderson. He lived in Aurora the first six years of his life and then lived in Chicago for three years. He returned to Aurora until age 16 and then lived for two years at Pleasant Dale, where he graduated from high school.
After a few years in Cherry Valley, Ill., he attended the University of Illinois, participating in the ROTC program from 1939 to 1943. He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree on Jan. 24, 1943.
He attended Officer Candidate School at the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army in the United States and Europe from May 27, 1943, to Jan. 15, 1946.
He married
Jessie Ann Kernodle on May 28, 1943, in St. Louis. After his discharge from the military, they returned to Aurora.
He was known for custom harvesting, extensive land leveling projects and many other agriculturally related endeavors.
Survivors include his wife; one son, James B. Anderson of Aurora; one daughter, Rae Ann (Mrs. Terry) Anderson Weymouth of Ann Arbor, Mich.; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Helyn Williams of Broadview, Ill., Dorothy Siegl of Chicago and Marilyn Marwick of Skokie, Ill.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Elvera Johnson, Edith Johnson, Ruby Engelthaler and Celia Dorman.
'Dorothy' Burke
ALBION -- Dorothea "Dorothy" I. Burke, 89, of Albion died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center chapel with the Rev. Eric Biehl officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Burke was born on March 25, 1908, at Clarinda, Iowa, to Jacob F. and Bessie (Brewer) Bloom. She attended school in Essex, Iowa.
She married
William T. Burke Sr. at Houston. They lived in Houston and Abilene, Texas; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz. She worked for more than 30 years at Porter's Western Wear in Tucson.
She enjoyed music and played the bass fiddle in a band every weekend for many years.
She moved to Nebraska in May 1991. She lived at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward from 1992 to 1995, when she moved to Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Survivors include one son, William T. Burke of Rauenberg, Germany; one daughter, Camille Burke, address unknown; and two sisters, Norma Hicks of Rockport, Mo., and La Rena Smith of Springfield, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Alva and Walter Bloom; and two sisters, Auda Bolin and Minnie Hankins.
Minnie Eng
MERNA -- Minnie Eng, 83, of Merna died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Merna. The Rev. Ron Pederson will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Seward Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Good Samaritan Center or the Nebraska Children's Home.
Mrs. Eng was born on May 18, 1914, on the family farm near Staplehurst to Ernest and Sophia (Meyen) Schomburg. She attended school through the 10th grade in Staplehurst.
She married
Georg Eng on Dec. 31, 1939, in Staplehurst. The couple moved in 1949 to Merna, where they ran Eng's Tavern. She retired in 1988 and moved to Callaway in 1997.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Merna.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria (Mrs. Dan) Smith of Merna; a son, Gary of McCook; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hulda Campbell of Seward and Alice Rudolph of Chicago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter, four brothers and five sisters.
Richard Larson
AURORA -- Richard Loyal Larson, 53, of Aurora died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. The Rev. Al Duminy will officiate. Scattering of ashes will be at a later date.
Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Larson was born on Sept. 24, 1944, at Tracy, Minn., to Roy and Lucille (Mumby) Larson. He grew up and attended school in rural Murray County through the eighth grade and graduated from Balaton High School in 1962. He served in the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1966. He received an associate's degree from SSU College in Marshall, Minn.
He worked for Northwestern Bell in Marshall and Deluth, Minn. He started working for AT&T; in Grand Island in 1987. He lived in Aurora for the past several years.
He was a life member of Zion Lutheran Church in Balaton and belonged to Communication Workers of American Local 7150. He enjoyed music and flying. Starting at an early age, he had an interest in telephone pioneers.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine of Deluth, Minn.; a stepson, Barry of Deluth, Minn.; two brothers, George of Balaton, Minn., and David of Bonner, Mont.; and three sisters, Donna Stack of Garvin, Minn., Lynn Dobbelair and LaVonne Hyde of Katy, Texas.
Stanley Pedersen
Dannebrog -- Stanley C. Pedersen, 81, of Dannebrog died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church Family Center in Dannebrog. The Rev. Rob Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery at Dannebrog.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Gideons or the church.
Mr. Pedersen was born on March 15, 1916, near Dannebrog to Carl and Anna (Christensen) Pedersen. He graduated from Dannebrog schools in 1933 and attended St. Paul Business College.
He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1939 and worked on the 1940 census.
He married
Marguerite Manthey on Oct. 9, 1940, in Washington, D.C. The couple moved in 1942 to Omaha, where he worked as a railway mail clerk for 31 years. He retired in 1973 and moved to his parents' farm west of Dannebrog, where he lived the rest of his life.
He enjoyed all of nature, including gardening and his flowers. His hobbies included woodworking, baseball, traveling and keeping detailed records.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dannebrog, where he held various offices. He was a member of the Gideons, was involved in the Nysted Insurance Co., served on the state board of a Lutheran church camping program, was a board member of Oak Street Manor and participated in many community events.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Keith of Covington, La.; two daughters, Joan (Mrs. Dael) Rich of Denver and Jan (Mrs. Stephen) Karp of Apple Valley, Minn.; five grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond of Helena, Mont.
