Doyt Shaw
LINCOLN -- Doyt L. Shaw, 63, of Lincoln died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Julius Tvrdy officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Mr. Shaw was a salesman with Nebraskaland Glass and formerly worked for the Burlington Railroad for 14 years.
Survivors include his wife, Cruz "Gloria" Shaw; two sons, Vincent and Doyt Al, both of Lincoln; one daughter, Becky Kolb of Lincoln; four grandchildren; one brother, Jim Shaw of York; and two sisters, Shirley (Mrs. Will) Thorburn of Lincoln and Mary Shaw of Omaha.
Gilbert Taylor
NEWMAN GROVE -- Gilbert Edmond Taylor, 92, of Newman Grove, formerly of Albion, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Albion. The Rev. Timothy Stahl will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in rural Clearwater.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Levander Funeral Home of Albion is in charge of arrangements.
Flossie Michalski
Flossie H. Michalski, 85, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at St. Francis.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Willard Ross
Willard Ross, 68, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jacobson Funeral Home in St. Paul. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul with military rites by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Ross was born on Feb. 5, 1931, in St. Paul to Adam and Esther (Anderson) Ross. He was raised in St. Paul and attended St. Paul schools. He helped his father on the farm.
He married
Valeria Brahatcek on April 23, 1950, at St. Paul. He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 11, 1952. He served in Korea until Aug. 15, 1954. He earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and served in the Army Reserves for eight years.
After the service, he lived at Schaupps in Sherman County, where he farmed. At the same time, he also worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, Welty Appliance and Swift packing plant. His wife died on Sept. 23, 1972.
In 1973, he moved to St. Paul. He continued to work at Swift. From 1978 until 1980, he was enrolled in Omaha business college, where he earned his business degree. In January 1983, he moved to Grand Island. He worked as a maintenance manager for an apartment complex. He worked at Menard's. At the time of his death, he was a security guard at Monfort.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading Western books and watching John Wayne movies. He was a past member of the Loup City VFW and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post in St. Paul.
Survivors include three sons, Blaine of St. Paul, Bart and Billie of Grand Island; two daughters, Bonnie Ayala of Columbus and Barbara Ross of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; one brother, Jim of St. Paul; and three sisters, Mavis Gagner of Lincoln, Ramona (Mrs. David) Fredrick and Darlene Brahatcek of Ashton.
He was preceded in death by his wife; five brothers, Wilmer, Marvin, Evert, Maxon and Dan Ross; and one sister, Marydell Henderson.
Daniel Bartlett
ORD -- Daniel Clark Bartlett, 90, of Ord died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Mr. Bartlett was cremated. Memorial services will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bartlett was born June 17, 1908, in Valley County, near Arcadia, to William Allen and Susan Una (Hull) Bartlett. He spent his childhood in Ord and graduated from Ord high School in 1925.
He attended business school in St. Paul, then went into the newspaper business.
He married
Margaret Cole. He later married
Pansy Pfrehm and Marge LaVelle.
He worked on many newspapers in Nebraska, Idaho and Oregon. He owned the Hermiston Herald in Hermiston, Ore. and the Sherman County Journal in Moro, Ore. for many years.
On Aug. 4, 1944, while dismantling ammunition, he was seriously injured, causing him to lose the sight in one eye.
In recent years he lived in Ord. For the past several years he lived at the Valley County Nursing Home.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge. he enjoyed music, singing, dancing and playing cribbage.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jo Hartzheim of Walla Walla, Wash. and Janice Fischer of Barstow, Calif.; three sons, Dan of Moro, Ore., Ross of Houston, Texas and Darr of Richland, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Blanche Gilmore, Helen Nelson and Murl Zikmund.
Meredith Brown
ELKHORN -- Meredith Brown, 83, of Elkhorn, formerly of Sargent, died March 31, 1999, at the Elkhorn Manor.
Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Hope cemetery in Sargent. The Rev. Murry Johnston will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born on Aug. 23, 1915, to Willard Farrish and Margaret McDowell (Duncan) Abbott. She grew up in Sargent and graduated from high school in 1932. She attended school at Cottey in Nevada, Mo. She taught school in Pleasant Hill at Arnold, a country high school near Broken Bow and at Hildreth.
She married
Dale Claude Brown in 1937. They lived in Sargent for 29 years. After her husband's death, she taught in Atkinson and Winnebago and did substitute teaching in the Lincoln public schools.
She moved to Omaha and did secretarial work until her retirement. She moved to Wichita, Kan., and later back to Omaha to be close to her family.
She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood.
Survivors include one son, Phillip of Omaha; one daughter, Nancy Shafer of Beaver City; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Forrest Abbott of Eugene, Ore.; and one sister, Nimlouise Abbott of Norfolk.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Alan; two brothers and one sister.
Robert Hugo
WOOD RIVER -- Robert J. Hugo, 67, of Wood River died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at the Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Services are pending with the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Lawrence Kelly
SARGENT -- Lawrence Kelly, 87, of Sargent died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in the Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Rhoads Funeral Home in Sargent with a 7 p.m. wake service.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
James Kozel
RAVENNA -- James Kozel, 77, of Ravenna, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
