Julia New
Julia Clara New, 88, of Lakeview Nursing Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the center.
Services were on Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Urban Schmitt officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. New was born on Feb. 25, 1909, at Spalding to John and Theresa (Riebslager) Klein.
Rose Ann Pfeiffer-Wodrich
Rose Ann Pfeiffer-Wodrich, 56, of 522 W. First St. died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at her home after an extended battle with cancer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Revs. Tom Ryan and Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Pfeiffer-Wodrich was born on Aug. 16, 1941, to Arthur and Rose (Hughes) Boehl. She graduated from Central Catholic High School and from St. Francis School of Nursing.
She then attended Kearney State College, where she received her bachelor of science and her master of science degrees in education.
She married
William Pfeiffer on June 15, 1965.
She married
Michael Wodrich on June 29, 1991, in Billings, Mont. They lived in Riverside, Calif., where she worked as a drug rehabilitation counselor.
The family moved to Grand Island two and a half years ago.
She was a member of the Catholic faith and was active in Christian evangelism, which included journeys to Russia and China. She was also active at the Abundant Life Christian Center.
Survivors include her husband; one son William "Billy" Pfeiffer Jr. of Omaha; two daughters, Julie Pfeiffer of Davis, Calif., and Erin Swinfard of Riverside, Calif.; six stepchildren, Brian of Rapelje, Mont., Daniel of the U.S. Marines, Richard, Sharon and Robert, all of Riverton, Wyo., and Steven Wodrich, at home; her mother, of Grand Island; one sister, Mary Schuster of Cornelius, Ore.; and two brothers, William Boehl of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Leo Boehl of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Irene Holbrook
BROKEN BOW -- Irene Holbrook, 84, of Broken Bow died Dec. 20, 1997, at her home.
A memorial open house will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at her home.
Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Holbrook was born on July 13, 1913, at Shickley to Edwin and Mattie (Stutzman) Eichelberger. She attended rural school in Custer County.
She married
John Holbrook on Dec. 5, 1945. They lived in Massachusetts and Michigan for many years. They returned to Custer County in 1959. Mr. Holbrook died in 1973. Mrs. Holbrook later moved to her home in Broken Bow. She worked at Becton Dickinson in Broken Bow for many years until retiring.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie (Mrs. Don) Slingsby of Broken Bow; one son, Gerald Holbrook of Elwood; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Mariano of Broken Bow.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
Doris Kyncl
ALBION -- Doris A. Kyncl, 69, of Albion died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion with the Rev. Brian Bergum and intern Annette Minderman officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 a.m. Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Kenneth Palmer
TAYLOR -- Kenneth Palmer, 75, of Taylor died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate. Burial will be in Madison Square cemetery west of Taylor.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Palmer was born on May 31, 1922, in Almeria to Percy and Mattie (Strohl) Palmer. He was educated in the Almeria School.
He married
Ethel Dunbar on May 21, 1947, in Ainsworth. He lived his entire life on a farm near Almeria. He farmed and ranched and did some local trucking.
He was affiliated with the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Loup County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Dennis) Paben of Kearney, Marilee Palmer of Aurora and Peggy (Mrs. Steven) Petersen of Wolbach; three grandchildren; and one sister, Bonnie Dunbar of Almeria.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald.
Martha Riggs
BROKEN BOW -- Martha Cecelia Riggs, 89, formerly of Dunning, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the United Church of Christ at Dunning. The Rev. David Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in the Brewster Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Riggs was born on Oct. 9, 1908, at Geneva to Ed and Annie M. (Clawson) Doud. She graduated from Dunning High School in 1928. She worked for the post office in Dunning for several years.
She married
Darwin P. "Pug" Riggs on March 17, 1936. She retired as a post office clerk on Sept. 7, 1979. Mr. Riggs died on Jan. 26, 1981.
Mrs. Riggs was an active member of the United Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Dale Riggs of Dunning; one daughter, Kay (Mrs. Lloyd) Anderson of Dunning; several grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leo Doud of Dunning.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one great-grandson and three brothers, Lewis, Harley and Francis.
Margaret Williams
SCOTIA -- Margaret Williams, 84, of Scotia died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Greeley Care Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Scotia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melaine Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be prior to service time Friday at the church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Greeley Care Home.
Ruth Wood
BROKEN BOW -- Ruth E. Wood, 94, of Broken Bow, formerly of Sumner, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Robert Strawn will officiate. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Wood was born on Feb. 11, 1903, at Eddyville to Arthur and Margaret Summers. She graduated from Eddyville High School. She also attended Kearney State Teachers College and taught school for five years.
She married
Leo Wood on Dec. 24, 1927, in Kearney. They lived on the family ranch near the South Loup River in the Burr Oak community south of Broken Bow throughout their marriage. Mr. Wood died on Aug. 12, 1994.
Mrs. Wood was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Broken Bow.
Survivors include one son, Dean "Bud" Wood of Kearney; two daughters, Dona (Mrs. Martin) Schipporeit of Sumner and Wanda Jackson of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
