Ethel Smith
ALBION -- Ethel Hall Smith, 91, of Albion died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Fullerton Manor, where she had lived a short time.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ. The Rev. Mary Avidano will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Naomi Sohrweid
ORD -- Naomi Sohrweid, 87, of Ord died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord. The Rev. Roger Leavitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Family Life Center Building Fund at the church.
Mrs. Sohrweid was born on Nov. 15, 1910, at Davis Creek to William and Laura (Bremer) Fuss. She moved with her parents to a farm in Mira Valley in March 1920. She attended Valleyside Rural School and graduated from Ord High School in 1930. She taught at District 48 School west of Elyria and District 66 School at Davis Creek.
She married
Ervin Sohrweid on June 10, 1934, at Mira Valley. The couple lived on a farm east of Amherst, later moved to Sumner for a few years and then returned to Amherst. They moved from Amherst to Mira Valley in March 1947 and lived on Mrs. Sohrweid's parents' farm.
She cooked for the Valleyside hot lunch program for 12 years. The couple moved into Ord in 1978.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Ladies, the Dorcas Society and the Mira Valley Mutual Benefit Extension Club.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Roger of Denver and Harold of Kerrville, Texas; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Bangert of San Ramon, Calif., Julia Gausman of Spokane, Wash., and Elva Petska of Lanexa, Va.
Lena Troester
Aurora -- Lena Matilda Troester, 97, formerly of Hampton died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. George Damm will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran cemetery near Hampton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Hampton.
Mrs. Troester was born on Sept. 12, 1900, in Hayes County to William and Elisabeth (Wall) Troester. Her family moved to Red Willow County in 1902. She attended Red Willow County Rural School.
She married
Samuel G. "Sam" Troester on Sept. 29, 1921, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Red Willow County. They lived in Hamilton County and farmed until 1940, when they moved to Iowa for five years.
They returned to the same farm in Hamilton County in 1945. They moved into Hampton in 1951. Mr. Troester died on Sept. 20, 1963, and Mrs. Troester continued to live in Hampton until 1995, when she moved to Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, until it merged with St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where she had held her membership ever since.
She was a member of the Lutheran Women's Mission League, Ladies Aid and the L&M; Extension Club. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening and made many quilts.
Survivors include two sons, Rolland Troester of Clarinda, Iowa, and Russell Troester of Hampton; two daughters, Phyllis Schrader of Hampton and Paulette (Mrs. John) Craig of Salida, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Albert Troester of McCook.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Troester and an infant brother; and five sisters, Annie Schauer, Rose Schaffert, Emma Fritz, Lydia Fritz and Meta Troester.
Ervin Bonertz
YORK -- Ervin J. Bonertz, 80, of York, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at York.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York The Rev. James Divis will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Metz Mortuary in York. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.
Mr. Bonertz was born on April 30, 1917, in Cedar County near St. Elena to Henry and Frances (Schmicker) Bonertz. He was a longtime farmer and rancher in Cedar and Rock counties.
He married
Lugardis "Lou" Schmidt on April 2, 1940, at Menominee.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York and a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Allen Bonertz of Menominee; four daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Merle) Lessig of York, Janice (Mrs. Dennis "Butch") Schweiger of Omaha, Jean (Mrs. R. Kim) Kramer of Fircrest, Wash., and Judy (Mrs. Richard) Orcutt of Red Cloud; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Bonertz of Yankton, S.D., and Wilford Bonertz of Wynot; and two sisters, Aurelia Huber of Pueblo, Colo., and Viola (Mrs. Jerome) Suing of Hartington.
He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
Mae Rookstool
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Mae Rookstool, 83, of Topeka, formerly of the Ansley area, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jim Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Jennelea Carter
WOOD RIVER -- Jennelea B. Carter, 92, of Wood River died Friday, May 29, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Wood River.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River with the Rev. John McKinnley officiating. Private family graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wood River Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Mrs. Carter was born on July 23, 1905, at Aurora to Franklin and Lena (Wilson) Bald. The family moved to Wood River on March 1, 1920. She graduated from Wood River High School in 1922 and taught school at Dist. 80 in Hall County for one year. After attending Kearney State College, she was employed in the office of the Brown Fruit Co. in Grand Island.
She married
Hugo Carter on March 24, 1927. He died in August 1978. She continued to live in Wood River until the time of her death.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, assistant librarian for eight years and head librarian for 14 years at the Maltman Memorial Public Library in Wood River, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and charter member of the Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center, serving on its advisory board for 25 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne (Mrs. Bob) Kruse of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Betty (Mrs. Jerry) Garrett of Syracuse; four grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Smith and Eleanor Brittin, both of Wood River.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister and two granddaughters.
Vera Daharsh
BROKEN BOW -- Vera Eva Daharsh, 88, of Broken Bow died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of God in Broken Bow with the Rev. David Bindel officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Church of God or the Gideons.
Mrs. Daharsh was born on July 31, 1909, in Broken Bow to James and Lucy (Luther) Peterson. She grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School. She then received her teaching certificate from Broken Bow Normal School.
She married
Norman A. Daharsh on June 30, 1929, in Broken Bow. The couple spent their entire life in Broken Bow. He died on April 12, 1984. She moved to the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in 1984, and later moved to Heritage Hall Nursing Home in 1986.
Survivors include three sons, Norman Daharsh of Eugene, Ore., Marlin Daharsh of Edmond, Okla., and Mike Daharsh of Wheaton, Md.; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Don; one daughter, Sharon; one brother; and two sisters.
