Harold Glines
HASTINGS -- Harold F. Glines, 76, of Hastings died Friday, May 29, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hastings. The Rev. John Lee Ross will officiate. Burial will be in the West Lawn cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or the All Saints Chapel at Good Samaritan Village.
Brand-Wilson Mortuary in Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Glines was born on Dec. 16, 1921, to Charles and Minnie (Kline) Glines at Wolbach.
He married
Joy Mickelsen on Sept. 27, 1944, at Cushing. He and his wife farmed in the Cushing area until moving to Hastings in 1968. He then worked at Good Samaritan Village in the maintenance department, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and of the Mens Bible Breakfast there. He was a former member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Cushing and a member of the church council there.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Tom) Smyithe of International Falls, Minn.; two sons, Jimmy of Highland Ranch, Colo., and Ted of Hastings; one sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Edwin) Francl of St. Paul and four grandchildren.
Hazel Nelson
SARGENT -- Hazel L. Nelson, 88, of Sargent died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at the Goli Medical Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in Madison Square cemetery west of Taylor.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Sargent United Methodist Church or Goli Medical Center.
Mrs. Nelson was born on the Custer-Loup county line northwest of Sargent on Sept. 9, 1909, to Jessie and Addie (Currey) Worthington. She lived and attended school in Loup and Custer counties, attending Liberty and Lookout school districts.
She then boarded in Sargent, working at the Sargent library and the Sargent motel while attending high school. She graduated from Sargent High School in 1929. After graduation, she taught school for one year at the Lookout School District in Loup County before moving to Chappell, where she also taught for one year.
On Dec. 14, 1932, she married
Floyd Nelson in Burwell. They lived on the Nelson farmstead until her husband passed away in 1966.
In 1967, Mrs. Nelson moved to her present home in Sargent, where she lived until her death.
She attended the United Methodist Church in Taylor and Sargent.
She is survived by a daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Fred) Howard of Sargent; two sons, Robert of Elyria and Alvin of Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Wheeler of Basin, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Eugene, and a brother, Harold Worthington.
'Betty' Peterson
LITCHFIELD -- Elizabeth C. "Betty" Peterson, 82, of Litchfield, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her daughter's home near St. Libory.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Congregational Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church with an 8 p.m. testimonial service. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Peterson was born on Jan. 24, 1916, to Stanley and Helen (Grabowski) Schuda on a farm northwest of St. Libory. As a child, she moved with her family to Ashton where she grew up and was educated in the Ashton area. In the 1940s, the family moved to a farm southwest of Loup City.
She married
Leon A. Peterson on March 4, 1946, at Loup City. The couple farmed near Loup City and Litchfield until 1987 when they moved into Litchfield where she lived the rest of her life.
She was a member of the Congregational Church of Ravenna, and its womens fellowship and adult Sunday school.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Rosemarie (Mrs. Larry) Grabowski of St. Libory and Sharon (Mrs. Gerald) Grabowski of Jansen and one brother, Clemence "Bill" Schuda of Brule.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Peterson; two sisters, Mary Schuda and Frances Warner and three brothers, Pete, George and Joseph Schuda.
Betty Phillips
AURORA -- Betty Phillips, 71, of Aurora died unexpectedly Saturday, May 30, 1998, in a Lincoln hospital.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Higby Mortuary of Aurora.
Wilma Walter
ST. EDWARD -- Wilma Joy Walter, 87, of St. Edward and formerly of Albion, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion with the Revs. Eric Biehl and Mike McInnis officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph cemetery at Mason City, Iowa.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Albion or the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church of St. Edward.
Mrs. Walter was born on March 27, 1911, at Coburg, Iowa, to William James and Muriel Joy (Keister) Parrott. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1928, and attended Mason City Jr. College and Coe College.
She worked in the accounting field in varied types of businesses, including sporting goods, Aircorp supply, swimsuit and rocket and missile manufacture. She lived in Red Oak, Iowa, and Mason City, Iowa, until 1942, when she moved to California.
She married
Charles Edwin Walter on April 19, 1953, at Long Beach, Calif. They lived in southern and northern California, most recently living in Milpitas, in the bay area. Following her husband's death in 1989, she moved to Albion to be near her family.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Cherubim Shrine No. 106, Rose Crox Shrine No. 7 of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, St. Claire Court No. 31 of the Order of Amaranth, Rose Chapter No. 102 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Home Chapter No. 0 of Women of the Moose. She was past worthy high priestess of Cherubim Shrine and she served two terms as chaplain of WOTM.
She also volunteered in the Albion Headstart Program, where the children called her "Grandma Wilma."
Survivors include one stepson, Charles W. Walter of California; and two stepsons, Keith Walter and Robert Walter.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, Willis.
'Andy' Oliver
Andrew W. "Andy" Oliver, 81, of No. 25 Chantilly in Grand Island died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Harms and the Rev. John Reehl officiating. A family prayer service will be 9:45 a.m. in the chapel of the church. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Oliver was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Grand Island to Charles and Augusta (Paustian) Oliver. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1934. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He married
Wilma Schwein on Dec. 9, 1939, in Omaha. Mr. Oliver worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and Firestone before joining Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in 1949 as a funeral director. He retired in 1980.
Mr. Oliver was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma; a son, David of Denver; a daughter, Connie Wood of Evanston, Ill; a grandchild; and a brother, George of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth, Florence and Irma.
Myrtle Spry
AURORA -- Myrtle Spry, 100, of Aurora died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Memorial Community Care at Aurora Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Aurora United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Scahill officiating. Burial will be in the Utica cemetery at Utica. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Spry was born to William and Belle (Booth) Dean on June 17, 1898, at Beaver Crossing. She attended school at Beaver Crossing and she helped her parents in their restaurant.
She married
Ralph Spry on Nov. 7, 1916, at Seward. They lived in Columbus until moving to Aurora in 1929. They operated the SYA Cafe and other cafes in Aurora for 19 years.
Mrs. Spry was active in the United Methodist Church and Dorcas Circle, as well as the Senior Card Club. She played piano, organ and accordion, and she created many needlepoint pictures. Mrs. Spry stayed active in community events through most of her 100 years.
Survivors include a daughter, June Johnson; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her brother, Del Dean; and a grandson, Steven Norris.
