Joseph Young
ALDA -- Joseph Young, 95, of Alda, formerly of Boelus, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Boelus. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Soulville cemetery near Boelus.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the family.
Mr. Young was born Sept. 11, 1902, to Willie and Olga Young. He went to school at Soulville and graduated from Boelus High School. He went to St. Paul Business College. He lived on a farm, which was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1873.
For the past eight years, he lived in Alda with Brenda and Jim Scheer. He was a paper carrier in Alda. He was known as "Grandpa Joe."
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Hampton Disbrow of Grand Island; and two special friends, Brenda Scheer and Wanda Jackson, both of Alda.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Merle; and three sisters, Minnie, Lillian and Eunice.
'Wayne' Lanman
CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- William 'Wayne' Lanman, 81, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Wood River and Grand Island, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the United Medical Center in Cheyenne.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Lavender Boyd
ALBION -- Lavender Lynn Boyd, infant daughter of Mark and Lyla (Kearney) Boyd, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
She was born May 30, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center.
Survivors include her parents; three sisters, Lorna, Laurann and Larrisa, all of Albion; grandparents Ronald and Carol Boyd of Bladen and Delores Kearney of Decatur, Ill.; and great-grandparents Elizabeth Boyd of Bladen and Dora Fett of Hebron.
She was preceded in death by a grandfather, Lavern Kearney, and two great-grandfathers, Winston Boyd and Fred Fett.
Betty Phillips
AURORA -- Betty Lou Phillips, 71, of Aurora died Saturday, May 30, 1998, in a Lincoln hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Aurora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jay Mitchell and Dr. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Phillips was born May 2, 1927, on a farm south of Aurora to William "Wylie" and Ora Ruth (Burwell) Hartzell. She attended Champ School south of Aurora until the family moved to Stockham where she graduated from high school in 1945.
She married
Paul Phillips on April 9, 1947, in Aurora. The couple lived in Aurora where she worked at the Hamilton Telephone Company, Douglas Market, Red and White Grocery, and South Side Grocery. She did baby sitting for many area children.
She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, church activities and neighbors and was the Hartzell family historian.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dick and Bob, both of Aurora; two daughters, Linda Phillips of Aurora and Rhonda (Mrs. Gene) Ulmer of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert of Paige, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton and Jerry and two sisters, Iona Salmon and Jean Luth.
Edward Thompson
GIBBON -- Edward H. Thompson, 81, of 607 May Ave., Gibbon died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Kearney. The Rev. John Hooge will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery in Gibbon.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospital Cancer Fund or the Good Samaritan Hospital Heart Fund.
Mr. Thompson was born Sept. 15, 1916, on a farm near Bladen to Fred and Marie (Petersen) Thompson. He attended rural schools near Bladen.
He married
Amy Ream on Sept. 3, 1935 in Smith Center, Kan. She died in 1967. He married
Mary Norden on Nov. 20, 1970, in Gibbon.
He farmed in Kearney County until 1944 and then worked as a section laborer for the Union Pacific Railroad for 27 years until retiring in 1971. He has been a resident of Gibbon since 1958.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judy (Mrs. Ardell) Roth of Urbana, Mo.; four stepdaughters, Ruby Schulte and Darlene Welsh, both of Lexington and Loretta Sickler and Betty Saldivar, both of Santa Anna, Calif.; a stepson, Angus Cameron of Grant Pass, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; a stepsister, Evelyn Smith of Gibbon; three halfbrothers, Fred Thompson Jr. and Leroy Thompson, both of Lincoln and Raymond Thompson of Wichita, Kan.; a halfsister, Martha Pritchard of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, a great-grandson, three brothers and three sisters.
Susie Gonzales
Susie Gonzales, 85, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m., Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Central Catholic.
Mrs. Gonzales was born on Jan. 19, 1913, at San Juan De Madera, Mexico, to Filemon and Constance Rosales. When she was 6 weeks old, she and her family moved to the United States. She was raised and educated at Cokedale, Colo.
She married
Joseph Gonzales on Jan. 11, 1936, at Kearney. They later moved to Grand Island. She owned and operated the Casa de Gonzales Restaurant, retiring in 1983. Mr. Gonzales died on Dec. 29, 1987.
Mrs. Gonzales was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.
Survivors include three daughters, Jeri Barrientos, Lainie Kotinek and Bobbie Gonzales, all of Grand Island; four sons, Fil Gonzales and Eli Gonzales, both of Grand Island, Tom Gonzales of Buena Park, Calif., and Billy Ramirez of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Rosales of California; and three sisters, Irene Luna of Grand Island, Josie Huerta of Kearney and Rae Medal of Redwood, Calif.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James Dean Gonzales, who died in 1958; a grandson; a great-grandson; a sister, Rachel Reynaga; and a brother, Manuel Rosales.
'Vance' Guilford
Vancil W. "Vance" Guilford, 79, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Vernon Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Mr. Guilford was born on April 5, 1919, in Hamilton County to Bert and Dora (McClay) Guilford. He grew up in Hamilton County, where he attended country school and Aurora High School. He farmed with his father and also on his own.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Sept. 11, 1942, to May 21, 1943. Following his discharge, he returned to Hamilton County and farmed. He moved to Grand Island in 1970 and worked for the Chicago Lumber Co. as a truck driver until he retired in 1982.
He was a member of the Grand Island Eagles, IOOF and the Rebekahs.
Survivors include two sisters, Alberta Heintz and Maxine Stenson, both of Aurora.
