Jewell Hanson
STROMSBURG -- Jewell A. Hanson, 68, of Stromsburg died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Anderson-Dodds-Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Mrs. Morgan was born on Oct. 25, 1929, in Polk to Elmer L. and Helen (Johnson) Morgan. The family moved to Osceola when she was four. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1947. After graduation, she began working as a cashier for Central Electric and Gas Co., where she worked for three years. She worked as a legal secretary for J.T. Stanton until 1955.
She married
Orion L. Hanson on Sept. 22, 1950, at Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg. She began serving as pianist for the church in 1948 and became its organist a year later when an organ was added. She held the position for 50 years.
She joined the church in 1951 and served in Covenant Women Ministries, the church board, Sunday School, choir, church building committee and the church centennial advisory committee. Alone and with her sister, she presented church chalk talks to many groups over a 30-year period. She began working at Stromsburg Public Library in 1978.
Mr. Hanson died in 1984.
She was active in the Woman's Club, Busy Wheels board and Meals on Wheels coordinator for the church and Woman's Club. She painted signs for various occasions and was among five women who restored the nativity scene for the city park. She was Swedish Festival Queen in 1992.
Survivors include one daughter, Starla (Mrs. Norman) Krause of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandsons; one step-granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce (Mrs. Dale) Lucas of Stromsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Kevin, in 1982.
Mildred Long
ST. EDWARD -- Mildred P. Long, 82, of Harmony Homes in Albion died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Primrose with the Rev. Mary Avidano officiating. Burial will be in Dublin cemetery at Primrose.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.
Mrs. Long was born on Feb. 14, 1915, to Robert A. and Clara M. (Sevreson) Harbottle on her parents' farm northeast of Primrose. She received her education at Boone County School District No. 85.
She married
Alex "Gunner" Long on Sept. 4, 1937, in Grand Island. They lived in the Primrose area, where she was a housewife and homemaker.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Primrose, United Presbyterian Women, Starlight and American Legion auxiliary, where she served as chairwoman of child welfare.
Mr. Long died in 1990. She lived at home until moving to Harmony Homes in Albion in October 1996.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Virg) Seda of Albion; one son, Lanny Long of Albion; one sister, Margaret Harbottle of St. Edward; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Lawrence; and one sister, Darlene.
'Toby' Simdorn
BOELUS -- Melvin "Toby" Simdorn, 74, of Boelus died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog with the Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Loup Fork cemetery near Boelus.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Mr. Simdorn was born on July 21, 1923, at Barney, N.D., to Gust and Alma (Witt) Simdorn. He attended country schools and lived his early life in the Barney area.
He married
Ruby Manthei on May 14, 1944, at Mantador, N.D. They lived on a farm near Wyndmere, N.D., until 1945 when he entered the Army. He served in Okinawa. After his discharge from the service, the couple moved to Moorton, N.D., where he was employed by a farmer for a few years.
They moved to Breckenridge, Minn., where he worked for Swift and Co. In 1953, he accepted a job with Franssen Hatchery, where he and his wife were managers. They later purchased the poultry farm, which became known as Toby's Poultry Farm.
In 1973, they moved to Boelus, where he managed the Boelus Elevator for 18 years. After the elevator closed, he worked for Rain and Hail Crop Insurance Co. as an adjustor. His hobby was woodworking.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog, where he served on the church council. He served on the Boelus town board for many years.
Survivors include his wife of Boelus; three grandchildren; one brother, DuWayne Simdorn of Wyndmere, N.D.; and three sisters, Viola Meyer and Arline (Mrs. Norbert) Meyer of Wahpeton, N.D., and Marion Staroba of Syndmere, N.D.
He was preceded in death by one son, James; and two brothers, Myron and Elroy Simdorn.
Pearl VanWinkle
CAIRO -- Pearl A. VanWinkle, 99, of Cairo died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cairo United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Cairo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. VanWinkle was born on June 1, 1898, at the Klinkacek homestead in Buffalo County to Frank and Josefa (Jarolim) Klinkacek.
She married
Clinton VanWinkle on Feb. 9, 1926, in Grand Island. They lived west of Cairo and moved into Cairo in 1942. They lived their married
life in and around Cairo. Mr. VanWinkle died on March 1, 1985. She continued to live in Cairo until she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna in 1994.
She was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church and W.S.C.S.
Survivors include two daughters, Loretta (Mrs. Henry) Rhoda and Doris (Mrs. Roy) Hochstetler, both of Cairo; one son, Edward VanWinkle of Cairo; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and three sisters.
'Kathy' Cooper
GIBBON -- Linda 'Kathy' Cooper, 41, of Chandler Springs, Ala., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Kearney.
Family services were Sunday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. Services and cremation will be in Talladega, Ala. She will be buried in Chandler Springs, Ala.
She was born on May 12, 1956, in Tyler, Texas. She was raised and attended school in Ashland, Ala. She graduated as a licensed practical nurse in Childersburg, Ala. She worked at Clay County Hospital in Ashland, Ala., and in home health care in Chandler Springs.
Survivors include her father, Jackie P. Cooper of Chandler Springs; her mother, Dollie Cooper of Talladega, Ala.; one sister, Myrtle Cooper of Talladega; one brother, Jimmy Cooper of Savannah, Ga.; two sons, Jason Cooper of Chandler and Billy Jack Cooper of Talladega; three grandsons; and special friend Benjamin David Smith of Gibbon.
Bernard Becker
Bernard A. Becker, 90, of Tiffany Square Care Center, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at the center.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

CHAPMAN -- William R. Knight, 70, of Chapman died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home for a Wednesday afternoon service at the Chapman Baptist Church.
Ann Volkl
ST. LIBORY -- Ann M. Volkl, 85, of St. Libory died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Wednesday near St. Libory.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Libory's Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Walter Phelan, Robert Chamberlain and Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church, with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters rosary and an 8 p.m. parish rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
