Jack Hackett
Jack J. Hackett, 81, of 2718 Sunny Brook Road died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Mr. Hackett's body was cremated, with interment of the ashes at a later date. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Hackett was born on Sept. 17, 1917, in Alton, Ill., to Valentine and Libby (Easton) Hackett. He received his education in Peoria, Ill., and graduated from high school in 1935.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1935 until 1938. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry in 1941, and received two bronze stars and the Purple Heart. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and the landing on Omaha Beach. He was wounded in action and was discharged in 1945.
Mr. Hackett married
Evelyn Marie Dworak on May 10, 1959. He was employed as a truck sales representative for a world wide truck company, and retired after 35 years of employment. He and his wife came to Grand Island in April of 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three half sisters, Delores J. Otten of Washington, Ill., Shirley J. Snyder of Winter Haven, Fla.; and Jerri Shurts of Peoria, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Angelica L. Phillips.
Sylvia Kovar
Sylvia E. Kovar, 64, of 918 E. Delaware died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Mrs. Kovar's body will be cremated and laid to rest at St. Stephen's Chapel. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she was a member for 30 years.
Mrs. Kovar was born on April 14, 1934, in Saunders County to Lyman and Esther (Nelson) Magnuson. She attended Fremont High School, where she met and later married
Robert Kovar. They married
June 5, 1951.
Mrs. Kovar was the office manager of Kriz Davis in Grand Island for 20 years. She served as Sunday school teacher in churches in Omaha, Hermiston, Oregon and Grand Island.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Susan Kovar of Lewisville, Texas; a son, Jeffrey Kovar of Indianola, Iowa; a sister, Shirley (Mrs. Tom) Tedrick of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Lucille Schmale
Lucille S. Schmale, 83, of Grand Island died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at Park Place Nursing Center.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Thomas Condell
PALMER -- Thomas H. Condell, 95, of Palmer died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Palmer. The Rev. Kenneth West will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.
Mr. Condell was born on Dec. 19, 1902, in Merrick County to John and Catherine (Watchorn) Condell. He grew up in Loup Valley and attended District 31 School.
On August 19, 1931, he married
Esther Scarborough in St. Paul. They farmed until 1978 and moved to Palmer in 1981.
He enjoyed reading and farming. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; one son, Dean of Capron, Ill.; one daughter, Carolyn (Mrs. Arthur) Davis of Palmer; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Amy Wergin of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth; and two sisters, Lillian Nitzel and Marian Condell.
Mildred Foote
ST. EDWARD -- Mildred L. Foote, 93, of Palm Desert, Calif., formerly of St. Edward, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at the Manor Care Nursing Center in Palm Desert.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. The Rev. Ken McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Angelo Lepant
Angelo Lepant, 78, of the Grand Island Veterans Home died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the All Faiths Chapel at the veterans home. The Rev. Jim Schmitt will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Fort McPherson National cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the veterans home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Lepant was born on Jan. 5, 1920, at Anselmo to Frank and Carrie (Palmisano) Lepant. He attended school in Custer County and then went to trade school, where he learned carpentry and masonry.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until 1945. After his discharge, he moved to Lincoln. He moved to North Platte in 1958. Due to a stroke, he moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home in December 1995.
He enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with many friends.
Survivors include one sister, Anne Talich of Westminster, Colo.; and one brother, Antony "Tony" Lepant of Broken Bow.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Jennie Coleman; and one brother, Frank B. Lepant.
Herbert Winters
Herbert R. Winters, 76, of 910 N. Boggs Ave. died Friday, May 15, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was cremated.
Private family services will be at a later date at the Bartley Cemetery.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Winters was born on Sept. 23, 1921, at Bartley to Herbert and Charlotte (Derrick) Winters. He was educated in Bartley and graduated from Indianola High School.
He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He retired in 1960 after more than 20 years of service.
Survivors include three sisters, Ruby Frank and Zolana Chinn, both of Indianola, and Helen Wenske of Las Vegas.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Weber; a twin brother, Harry; and a brother, Jimmy.
Otto Amos
SARGENT -- Otto Amos, 65, of Sargent died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent. The Rev. Walter Collins will officiate. Burial will be in the Dry Valley cemetery south of Sargent.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mr. Amos was born on July 28, 1932, at Comstock to Otto and Edna (Oliver) Amos. He attended Dry Valley School and graduated from the 10th grade.
He went to Oregon at the age of 16 and stayed until 1953.
He married
JoAnn Yonally on Feb. 13, 1953, at Kelso, Wash. He came back to Sargent and went into the service in April 1953. He served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. After his discharge from the service, they settled back in Oregon and then in Eureka, Calif.
He moved to Sargent in 1977 and bought the Paladium. He ran it for a couple years and then moved back to California. He retired in 1994 and moved back to Sargent.
He was a truck driver for local freight.
He was a member of the Broken Bow Elks Club and the Evangelical Free Church of Sargent.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sonja (Mrs. Rodney) Maples of Eureka, Calif.; a son, Steven Amos of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; and six brothers, Don Spencer of Florence, Ore., Kenneth and Leonard Amos, both of Sargent, Jerald Amos of Long Pine, Gordon Amos of Blocksburg, Calif., and Marvin Amos of Broken Bow.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Amos.
