Antonio Salinas
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Antonio L. Salinas, 95, of Grand Forks, N.D., died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Valley Memorial Home Eldercare there.
Services were on Tuesday in the Valley Memorial Nursing Home chapel in Grand Forks.
Norman Funeral Homes of Grand Forks, N.D., was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Salinas was born on June 13, 1902, in El Refuigo Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He moved to Texas at the age of 12 and was educated and grew up there.
He married
Angelita Cantu on Dec. 27, 1927, in Giddingo, Texas. They moved in 1945 to North Dakota, where he worked on farms in the Forest River and Inkster areas. He retired in 1965 and moved to Grand Forks, where he worked for Western Potato Co.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Antonio Jr. of Houston and Alex and Albert, both of Grand Island; five daughters, Dora (Mrs. Ralph) Moncada of McAllen, Texas, Alice Bellinger, Helen Perez and Mary (Mrs. Victor) Nelsrud, all of Grand Forks, and Suzie Salinas of Pharr, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Nickolas.
'Buster' Hanover
Leighton K. "Buster" Hanover, 75, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Mr. Hanover's body was cremated.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church, followed by a 7 p.m. parish rosary.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, Alzheimer's Association or St. Francis Hospice.
Mr. Hanover was born on Sept. 27, 1923, at Titusville, Fla., to Carl C. and Hazel D. (Spry) Hanover. He attended school in Titusville until age 8. He moved to Nebraska with his family and attended rural school in the Grand Island area. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He then worked for Safeway Stores and the Donald Co. in Grand Island.
He married
Jacqueline Neumann on Dec. 26, 1946, at St. Mary's Cathedral. They moved to Tacoma, Wash., where Mr. Hanover again worked for Safeway. They returned to Grand Island in 1948.
Mr. Hanover began farming and started Hanover Implement Co. He then worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and began working at New Holland in 1965, all while continuing to farm. He retired in 1985.
He had served on the District 38 school board and on the Center Township Board.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Eagles and the Liederkranz.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dale Hanover of Grand Island; two daughters, Sharon Beyersdorf of Spokane, Wash., and Janet Stander of Grand Island; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Curtis Hanover; and one sister, Jean Hanover.
Paul Manolidis
Paul Manolidis, 78, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mr. Manolidis was born on March 13, 1920, at Elkins, W.Va., to Chris and Florence (Lloyd) Manolidis. He grew up and was educated at Elkins, graduating in 1942 from Elkins High School.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on June 6, 1942. He took basic training and airplane mechanic school at Kiester Field in Mississippi, B-17 airplane school at the Boeing factory in Seattle and was stationed at Salt Lake Air Base, Smokey Hill Army Air Base and the Grand Island Army Air Base.
He married
Phyllis Boroff on Dec. 24, 1943, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island.
He was discharged from the Army Air Corps on Dec. 22, 1945, as a staff sergeant. He worked at the Grand Island Army Air Base as a civilian aircraft maintenance inspector from January 1946 to June 1947. He attended night classes in accounting at the Grand Island Business College from September 1948 to April 1951.
He worked at the Kearney Air Force Base from August 1947 to July 1949. He then began working for the Bureau of Reclamations in various positions at Grand Island from August 1949 to May 1968. He began working as an optician at Grand Island Optical in June 1968 and retired from there in 1989
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Terry and Steve, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Jill Collen of Sheldon, Iowa; four grandchildren; one brother, George Manolidis of West Virginia; and two sisters, Eva Stalnaker and Opal Menear, both of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren and one brother, Jim.
Rodney Bell
ALDA -- Rodney A. Bell, 57, of Alda died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. wake service, Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Vivian Govaerts
BROKEN BOW -- Vivian Alfretta Govaerts, 82, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Govaerts was born on July 16, 1916, at Comstock to John and Mildred (Todd) Mills. She grew up on farms in Custer County and graduated from Sargent High School in 1934.
She married
Lester C. Govaerts on April 22, 1937, at Ord. They lived northeast of Broken Bow on land owned by the Govaerts family until they moved to Broken Bow in 1986.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. She served on the school board, the election board, was a 4-H leader and a member of the Out Reachers Circle.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. John) McDaniel of Sargent and Esther (Mrs. Joe) Auch Moedy of Kearney; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Young of Wasilla, Alaska; and one brother, John Mills of Cochise, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter and one brother, Henry Mills.
Susie Johnson
AURORA -- Susie Alice Eldora Johnson, 88, of Aurora died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Johnson was born on Feb. 20, 1910, near Morse Bluff to William and Susan (Grizzle) Bignell. She grew up and attended grade school at Morse Bluff and graduated from North Bend High School.
She attended the University of Nebraska, Midland College and Iowa State College. She taught school in western Nebraska and North Bend.
She married
Lester Johnson on June 12, 1931, near Morse Bluff. They lived in several places and had lived in Aurora for the past 26 years.
She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and Dorcas Circle and was active in other church activities. She also was a member of the Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donald of Littleton, Colo., and James of Ralston; four daughters, Polley (Mrs. Edward) Olivera of San Carlos, Calif., Lillian (Mrs. Louis) Oswald and Christina (Mrs. Jack) Robertshaw, both of Aurora, and Susan (Mrs. Ronald) Sipe of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Bignell of Bradenton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter and three sisters.
