Joseph Hosek
Joseph Hosek, 85, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent, with the Rev. Bernard Berger officiating. Burial will be in Geranium Cemetery, east of Sargent, with military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Monday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the family's choice.
Melvin Whitehead
MASON CITY -- Melvin Whitehead, 69, of Mason City died Friday, May, 15, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mason City School Gymnasium. The Rev. Victor Crawford will officiate. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 142 of Mason City.
Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Melvin Whitehead was born on Sept. 16, 1928, near Mason City to James and Nina (Taylor) Whitehead. He grew up in the Mason City area and graduated from Mason City High School. After high school, he worked at various jobs, including a position at Ruff Motor Co. in Broken Bow.
He joined the U.S. Army in December 1950 and served in the 216th Chemical Service. He was discharged in December 1952.
He married
Faye Whitehead on Oct. 26, 1961, at First Baptist Church in Mason City. They spent their entire married
life in Mason City. He worked as the school custodian, bus driver and coach from 1956 until 1991.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mason City, American Legion Paul Coffman Post No. 142 of Mason City and the Mason City cemetery board. He was a past member of the Volunteer Fire Department and was an emergency medical technician. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dennis Schall of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Larry Schall of Stratton; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Delwin Whitehead of Kearney and Clinton Whitehead of Broken Bow; and one sister, Janice (Mrs. Wright) Robertson of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Iola Browning.
Marc Neppl
Marc A. Neppl, 31, of 417 N. Custer died Friday, June 19, 1998, as a result of a car accident near Ord.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Grand Island with the Revs. Richard Bacon and Joel Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Memorials are suggested to the family or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Neppl was born on Jan. 21, 1967, in Carroll, Iowa, to Ed and Marcene (Jones) Neppl. He grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Grand Island in January 1976. He was educated at Engleman Elementary School, Westridge Middle School and Northwest High School, where he graduated in 1985. He participated in the wrestling program at Northwest, and was a two-time state qualifier.
He moved to Plano, Texas, and worked as a carpet installer for two years. He returned to Grand Island in 1989. He was a partner/assistant manager at Grand Island Trailer Inc.
He married
Paula Hill on Oct. 3, 1992, in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island. He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and boating.
He was a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; one son, Ethan of Grand Island; a stepdaughter, Ashley Grenvall of Grand Island; his parents, Ed Neppl and Marcene Neppl, both of Grand Island; three brothers, Tim and Matt, both of Grand Island, and Nick of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and three sisters, Renata Neppl of Pierce, Beth (Mrs. Robert) Kopystynsky of Grand Island and Joni (Mrs. Tommy) Boyer of Garland, Texas.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Brent; his paternal grandparents, Ed and Julie Neppl; and maternal grandparents, Don and Elnora Jones.
Dovie Oleson
Dovie P. Oleson, 92, of Grand Island died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Community Care of Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Richard M. Bacon will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's favorite charity or church.
Mr. Oleson was born July 2, 1905, in Farragut, Iowa, to Robert and Pearl (Stoner) Popejoy. As a child she moved with her family to a farm north of St. Paul where she attended Howard County rural schools. At the age of 15, she attended the St. Paul Business College to receive her teaching certificate. She began teaching at the age of 16 in several local country schools, including Gage Valley school.
She married
Roy L. Oleson on Oct. 9, 1925, in Kearney. The couple lived in St. Paul where for several years she operated a beauty salon out of her home. The couple later lived in Elm Creek, Hastings, Wood River and Gibbon. In the late 1970s they moved to Grand Island. For many years she gave organ and piano lessons out of her home. Mr. Oleson died Oct. 3, 1987. She moved to Community Care of Grand Island in the spring of 1994.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Grand Island.
She is survived by a daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Robert E.) Martin of Lincoln; a son, Robert W. Oleson of Castroville, Calif.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, L.R. Popejoy.
'Carrol 'Tuma
Evelyn "Carrol" Tuma, 57 of 803 E. 14th died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Elder Donald Fuller officiating. Burial will be in the Belgrade Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Tuma was born on Sept. 19, 1940, at Ponca City, Okla., to James C. and Eva M. (Nelson) Hambleton. She spent most of her youth in Nance County. She graduated from Belgrade High School in 1958, then attended Norfolk Jr. College.
She worked for the Nance County Journal until she married
Anthony A. Tuma in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on April 7, 1961. She was active with the PTA while her children attended school. She also helped with the Boy Scouts.
She was employed the past 25 years as a front desk clerk at several motels. They were the Yancey Hotel, Best Western Island Inn, Super 8 and, at the time of her death, the Days Inn.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed her family, reading, embroidery and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Anthony of Grand Island; three sons, James of Central City, and Ross and Shawn, both of Grand Island; one daughter, April Cupples of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; one brother, Elston Hambleton of Fullerton; and one sister, Maneta (Mrs. Ervin) Kuhlman of Peetz, Colo.
She was preceded in death by four infant sons, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Lucille Boll
ST. PAUL -- Lucille Boll, 83, of St. Paul died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul with Ellen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Mrs. Boll was born on Nov. 25, 1914, on a family farm near Cushing to Frank and Jennie (Matousek) Jares. She was educated in Cushing and then helped her parents on the farm, which was located southwest of Cushing.
She married
Edmund Boll on Aug. 22, 1934, in Grand Island. The couple first farmed in the Dannebrog area. They later moved to San Diego, Calif., and then to Wichita, Kan., where she worked for the Boeing Aircraft Co. The couple moved back to a farm south of St. Paul in 1948.
In 1983, the couple left the farm and moved into St. Paul. While living on the farm and in St. Paul, she worked for Louie's Cafe, which later became Nesiba's Cafe for many years.
Her husband died on July 4, 1986. She lived in the family home the rest of her life.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Christmas Club No. 1 in St. Paul and a former member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 21 of St. Paul. She was also a member of several card clubs.
Survivors include one son, David of Grand Island; one daughter, Myra Jean (Mrs. Harry) Hunt of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister, Bessie (Mrs. William) Lanka of Grand Island; one brother, Louis of St. Paul; four grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
