U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Gwyneith Dunn

ESTES PARK, Colo. -- Gwyneith Dunn, 81, of Estes Park, Colo., died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stonacek Funeral Home in Pierce. Burial will be in Prospect cemetery at Pierce.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Dunn was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Estes Valley or American Cancer Society research in care of Allnutt Funeral Service in Estes Park, Colo.

Mrs. Dunn was born on Sept. 25, 1917, at Plainview to Albert and Thelma Rebecca (Story) Steinkraus. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1935 and attended Wayne State College for one year.

She married Donald J. Dunn on Sept. 25, 1938, in Plainview. Mr. Dunn died in 1980.

Mrs. Dunn was a homemaker. She lived at Plainview for 21 years, in Grand Island for 27 years and in several other Nebraska towns. She moved to Estes Park in 1980.

She was active in Girl Scouts and was a Red Cross volunteer in Grand Island. She also was involved in church work at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island and taught Sunday school there for several years.

She enjoyed reading, watching videos and writing letters to her family.

She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and Community Church of the Rockies.

Survivors include four daughters, Sally (Mrs. Ron) Armknecht of Elkland, Mo., Donna Petzoldt of Grand Island, Sherry (Mrs. John McElroy) Dunn of Springfield, Mo., and Debby Reiner of Omaha; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Leah Foster of Golden, Colo., Phyllis Stueckrath of Lakewood, Colo., and Bette Wecker of Parkville, Mo.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son and one sister.

Vernard Kemplin

HASTINGS -- Vernard E. "Vern" Kemplin, 97, of Hastings died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Services will be on Saturday at Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh. Burial will be in Ash Hollow cemetery at Oshkosh.

Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home of Kenesaw is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Kemplin was born on June 9, 1901, in Garden County to George F. and Anna Kathryn (Wedd) Kemplin. He attended Antelope Valley School until ninth grade.

He married Aretta Grace Starkey on Sept. 27, 1934. Mrs. Kemplin died on Aug. 2, 1948.

Mr. Kemplin farmed in Garden County until 1952. He was a farmer and carpenter in Logan County until 1971, when he moved to Juniata. He did carpentry work until 1988, when he retired. He moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings in September 1995.

Survivors include four daughters, Erma Sadler of Kearney, Catharine Kickman of Minden, Nellie Purvis of Grand Island and Viola Kemplin of Lincoln; three sons, Ellis of Gresham, Ore., George of Auburn, Wash., and Donald of Brule; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl.

Wilma Leibhart

MERNA -- Wilma Josephine Leibhart, 85, formerly of Merna, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Merna.

Mrs. Leibhart was born on Aug. 4, 1913, at Merna to Ira and Opal (Fenimore) Burton. She spent most of her life in the Anselmo and Merna area. She attended grade school in Colorado and Pleasant Hill near Arnold and graduated from Merna High School in 1930. During high school, she worked part time at Davolt's Grocery Store and Graybeal's Market.

She married Newell Leibhart on March 16, 1932. She worked at the Becton Dickinson plant in Broken Bow for several years. While living on a farm in the Ortello Valley, she raised chickens. For several years on the Fourth of July, she would spend the day dressing and cooking chicken. That evening, the neighbors would be invited for supper and stay for fireworks later in the evening.

She collected salt and pepper shakers for many years and had several hundred sets when she had to leave her home in Merna. She then lived at Custer Heights in Broken Bow for a short time before moving to Cambridge Court in Kearney, where she lived for three years. She had lived at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow since 1993.

Mrs. Leibhart was a member of the United Methodist Church in Merna, the Rebekahs, the Broken Bow Does and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Survivors include five children, Clair Leibhart of Fort Morgan, Colo., Kay (Mrs. John) Bowley of Holdrege, Keith Leibhart of Merna, Sharon (Mrs. Roger) Russell of Lincoln and Cheryl (Mrs. Gene) Harmon of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; one sister, Francis Treleven of Everett, Wash.; and one brother, Clarence Burton of Denver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandchild and two brothers.

Helen G. Phillips

WOOD RIVER -- Helen G. Phillips, 91, of the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at the center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Harold F. Richardson

GIBBON -- Harold F. Richardson, 77, of Gibbon died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton.

Anna Lucht

PLATTSMOUTH -- Anna C. Lucht, 91, of Plattsmouth, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Harold Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Francis cemetery at Humphrey.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary, Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Grand Generation Center.

Mrs. Lucht was born on Feb. 8, 1908, at Lawrence to Jacob and Ottillia (Moelle) Keller. She and her family moved in 1914 to Humphrey, where she grew up and attended St. Francis School.

She married Arthur Lucht on July 10, 1934, at Omaha. They lived in Omaha from 1944 to 1976, when they moved to Grand Island. Mr. Lucht died on Aug. 5, 1994. Mrs. Lucht then moved to Plattsmouth.

She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed playing cards and dancing.

Survivors include two sons, Les Lucht of Grand Island and Mel Lucht of Lancaster, Pa.; two daughters, Nadine (Mrs. Don) McConiha of Flint, Mich., and Kathryn (Mrs. Norman) Manley of Murray; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gertie Frauendorfer of Humphrey and Josephine Hamling of Norfolk.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, three brothers and five sisters.

Joseph Guzman

AURORA, Colo. -- Joseph Ventura Guzman, 79, of Cherry Creek at Aurora, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died March 12, 1999, at Cherry Creek from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Services were at Aurora Chase Mortuary with burial in Fort Logan National cemetery in Colorado.

Mr. Guzman was born on Jan. 12, 1920, in Mina, Nev., to Marcelino and Maria Guzman. He graduated from Long Pine High School in 1938. He lettered in track, football and basketball. He and his brothers played baseball on various local teams during the summers.

He married June Jenner on July 27, 1941, in Tonopah, Nev. Mrs. Guzman died in 1989.

He served in the U.S. Army and fought overseas during Word War II.

Mr. Guzman was superintendent of Cypress Mines in Keeler, Calif., and transferred in 1954 to Grand Island. Anticipating retirement, he transferred back to Keeler in 1971 and retired in 1978.

He was an avid golfer and dancer and enjoyed sports. He won the National Rifle Association Small Bore (.22 caliber) in 1962 for the central United States.

Survivors include one son, Robert Guzman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one daughter, Linda (Mrs. W.W.) Shomshor of Aurora; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lupe Masters of Vacaville, Calif., and Constance Valdez of Long Pine, Calif.

Regina Konkol

BOSQUE FARMS, N.M. -- Regina R. Konkol, 91, of Bosque Farms, N.M., a native of Ashton, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in a hospital there.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The Rev. Gallegos will officiate. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Friday at Strong-Thorne Mortuary in Albuquerque, N.M.

She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband, John Konkol.
