Maxine Koenig
Maxine M. Koenig, 84, of Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Lakeview.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. William Voelker will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Therapeutic Community for Young Women or the Crisis Center.

Mrs. Koenig was born on Feb. 12, 1915, at St. Paul to Wallace and Jennie (Baker) Crowe. She was educated at St. Paul High School and Kearney State Teachers College. She taught school in Howard County from 1932 to 1937.
She married
Leon J. "Slim" Koenig on July 24, 1937, at St. Paul. They lived in various places around the country. They made their first permanent home in Grand Island in 1951. They moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1960. After Mr. Koenig's death in April 1973, she returned to Grand Island to live near her family.
She volunteered for her church, the American Red Cross, the Crisis Center and the St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, bridge and quilting. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Prairie Pioneers Quilt Club and a member of the Grand Island Woman's Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen K. Mayer of Grand Island and Mary Koenig Loring of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Crowe of California; and one sister, Charlene Helzer of California.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace and Bruce Crowe; and one sister, Janet Bennett.
'Ace' Budnick
HAMPTON -- Aeza Ann "Ace" Budnick, 79, of Hampton died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. Shari Duminy will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Hampton.
Mrs. Budnick was born on March 16, 1919, to Anton H. and Eltie (Brondel) Caliendo. She grew up and graduated from high school in Perkins County. As a young woman, she moved to Hampton, where she was a housekeeper for several families.
She married
Ralph John Budnick on Oct. 21, 1938. Other than living in Detroit for a short time, they lived on a farm near Hampton throughout their marriage. She worked at Osborn's Cafe, which then became Jack's Cafe in Hampton, and at Jones' Cafe, also in Hampton. She owned the Ace High in Bradshaw. She and her husband farmed near Hampton until his death in 1983. She then farmed with her son, Tom, until her retirement in 1985.
She was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Hampton, served as a den mother for Cub Scouts and transported children to ball games when her children were young. She also enjoyed the outdoors and working on the farm.
Survivors include two sons, Willis "Bill" Ralph Budnick of Pascagoula, Miss., and Thomas "Tom" Ray Budnick of Hampton; one daughter, Kairon Marie Budnick of Hollywood, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helena "Lee" Long of Cleveland, Viola "Vi" Reichard of Mankato, Minn., and Bellva Smith of Tucson, Ariz.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Hubert "Bud" Caliendo; and two sisters, Kelly Pickeral and Lorita Rizzo.
Elinor Carnes
CHAPMAN -- Elinor Evangeline Carnes, 83, of Chapman died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Carnes was born on July 13, 1915, at Aurora to Edgar and Erma (Yantz) Gorham. She grew up in Aurora, graduated from Aurora High School and attended York College. She taught school in rural Hamilton County and worked at the Hested's Store in Aurora.
She married
Elmo Carnes on Oct. 14, 1936, at Lincoln. They lived in Aurora. They moved in 1951 to a farm near Chapman. She entered the Hamilton Manor in Aurora in January after suffering a stroke.
She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, belonged to the Merry Wives Extension Club, was a 4-H leader and was a member of the Happy Wanderers and Golden Trailblazers Camping Clubs.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Millard of Omaha; one daughter, Ann Connell of Chapman; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Gorham of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; and two sisters, Beatrice Wolcott of Livermore, Calif., and Donna Draper of Fairbury.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Elmer Lukesh
ORD -- Elmer A. Lukesh, 80, of Ord died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Revs. Jim Warner and Stanley Gorak will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 8 p.m., Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic School.
Emma Novak
ORD -- Emma Novak, 89, of Ord died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Keith Menter will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Western Fraternal Life Association No. 112 or the Senior Classics of Valley County.
Esther Rolfsmeyer
LITCHFIELD -- Esther Rolfsmeyer, 89, of Litchfield died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Litchfield. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Louise Shaughnessy
ST. PAUL -- Louise A. Shaughnessy, 84, of St. Paul died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. There will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the St. Paul Library Foundation or the Howard County Community Hospital Foundation.
Mrs. Shaugnessy was born on May 16, 1914, at St. Paul to Alonzo and Rose (Jelinek) French. She was educated at St. Paul Public School and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1933. She graduated from the University of Nebraska school of nursing in 1935 and then worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for one year.
She married
Cyril P. Shaughnessy on Sept. 14, 1936, at St. Paul. The couple lived in St. Paul. Mr. Shaughnessy died on Oct. 24, 1997.
Mrs. Shaughnessy enjoyed cooking, baking, cross-stich and china painting. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Counsel of Catholic Women, Catholic Daughters of America, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter AP, and served on the St. Paul Library Board and the Howard County Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Alumni Association.
She is survived by two sons, C. Patrick Shaughnessy of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Michael J. Shaughnessy of St. Paul; three daughters, Rose Ann (Mrs. Richard) Kehoe of Bellingham, Wash., Maureen (Mrs. Jim) Cleary of Omaha and Teri Shaughnessy of Rohnert Park, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Taylor of St. Paul.
In addition to her husband, she was precede in death by two sisters, Laretta Johnson and Rose Lott.
Blanche Smedra
ORD -- Blanche E. Smedra, 80, of Ord, formerly of Loup City, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Smedra was born on April 28, 1918, at Loup City to Walter and Kate (Ziola) Woitalewicz. She grew up in Loup City and was educated at Loup City public schools.
She married
Ernest R. Smedra on Jan. 25, 1943, at Loup City. The couple farmed in the Austin area south of Loup City throughout their marriage. Mr. Smedra died on Dec. 21, 1988. Mrs. Smedra continued to live on the farm until 1995, when she moved to Ord due to failing health. In the past year, she had lived at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
She enjoyed decorating, quilting, flowers and dancing.
She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women, the Alpha Nu Extension Club and the Loup City Saddle Club.
Survivors include two sons, Chuck Smedra of Ord and Pat Smedra of Topeka, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Theresia Wroblewski.
