Minnie Carlson
OSCEOLA -- Minnie V. Carlson, 91, of Osceola died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Osceola. The Rev. Clifford Hoper will officiate. Burial will be in the Swede Home Cemetery.
Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald and Paul, both of Osceola; two daughters, Miriam "Mim" Johnson of Grand Island and Nancy Carlson of Minneapolis; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, G. Clarence Carlson, died in 1991. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Lucy Hoback
CENTRAL CITY -- Lucy Hoback, 80, of Central City died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Edgewood Vista in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Revs. Dean Entrekin and Melvin Zichek will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hoback was born on Aug. 13, 1918, in Fount, Ky., to John and Lizzie (Jones) Hammons. She moved with her family to Central City in 1919. She attended District 48 School and graduated from Central City High School in 1936.
She married
Raymond Sawyers on March 10, 1939, in Central City. She worked in the Merrick County treasurer's and clerk's offices from the early 1960s until 1974. Mr. Sawyers died in 1973.
She married
Oren Hoback on April 7, 1974, in Central City. They lived and worked together on a farm until Mrs. Hoback entered the nursing home.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Central City. She held various offices in church organizations and taught Bible school and Sunday school. She volunteered at Community Care Nursing Home in Central City.
She loved music, especially Christian music. She enjoyed growing a vegetable garden and canning the produce. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies.
Survivors include her husband, Oren of Central City; two sons, Vernon of Central City and Dorson of Grand Island; two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Gary) Green of Central City and Faye (Mrs. Tom) Roebuck of Grand Island; one stepdaughter, Marlene (Mrs. Lyle) Garwood of Central City; 12 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ethel Gibson of Anderson, Ind., Esther Stock of Pendelton, Ind., and Marie Jensen of Project City, Calif.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son and four brothers, Charles, Bill, Hubert and Sam Hammons.
Ken Hopper
GIBBON -- Ken E. Hopper, 42, of Gibbon died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon.
Agnes Krick
SPALDING -- Agnes M. Krick, 77, of Spalding died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Wednesday at Dolce Scheef Mortuary.
Robert Kriha
RAVENNA -- Robert C. Kriha, 63, of Ravenna died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus cemetery south of Ravenna.
A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kriha was born on April 28, 1935, in Buffalo County to Charles and Helen (Landrigan) Kriha. He was educated at District 103 School and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1952.
He served in the U.S. Army from November 1954 to October 1956. He served in Panama.
He married
Joan Stittle on June 25, 1958. The couple lived on a farm south of Ravenna.
Mr. Kriha was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna, the Holy Name Society and National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. He served as chairman of the Annevar Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. He also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jim and Dale, both of Ravenna, and Dan of Loup City; four daughters, Deb Stocker of Kearney, Teresa Shepherd of Victoria, Kan., Linda Fegter of Holdrege and Karen Cline of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Betty Paitz of Pleasanton and Kay Ripp and Ruth Ripp, both of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Mary Larson
DUNNING -- Mary Barnes Larson, 80, of Dunning died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Because of weather conditions, services have been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Myrtle Ummel
CAIRO -- Myrtle E. Ummel, 77, of Cairo died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery in Cairo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.
Memorials are suggested to the Cairo Quick Response Team.
Mrs. Ummel was born on Jan. 26, 1922, at Bridgeport to Lou and Emily (Silvery) Vierk. When she was 2 years old, her mother died and she went to live with her aunt and uncle, Herman and Ruth Vierk. She graduated from Cairo High School.
She married
Glen Ummel on April 7, 1942, in Kansas. The couple moved near Cairo, where she helped work on their farm. They always lived within four miles of their original home.
Mrs. Ummel was a member of the Happy Homemakers Club. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing and canning.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Poehler of Cairo; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ester Kinney of Guernsey, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Art Vierk; and one sister, Viola Pennifield.
'Red' Zalud
ORD -- Marion "Red" Joseph Zalud, 72, of Ord died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery at Burwell with military rites by the Ord Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Zalud was born on Sept. 19, 1926, in Garfield County to John and Grace (Scofield) Zalud. He grew up in Garfield County and graduated from Burwell High School.
He married
Shirley L. Moss on Dec. 21, 1948, at Burwell. He served in the Korean War as a supply sergeant in the U.S. Army.
The couple moved to Ord in 1963. He spent most of his professional life working for KN Energy and retired from the utility in 1988. He had worked for Junior Jablonski in the last 10 years.
He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Club. He enjoyed reading the newspaper, woodworking, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Garreth of Vermillion, S.D.; two daughters, Lana M. Kreger of Omaha and Jodi Russell of Carbarro, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pat Hedersen of Aspen Cydres, Calif., and Gert Koos of Winner, S.D.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
'Bud' Clingerman
MINERAL WELLS, Texas -- Lee C. "Bud" Clingerman, 70, of Mineral Wells, Texas, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at his home following a long illness.
Services will be on Friday in Mineral Wells.
Mr. Clingerman was born on Aug. 23, 1928, at Marshall Town, Iowa, to Clarence and Maria Clingerman. He was educated at Marshall Town and grew up there. The family moved to Grand Island in 1942.
He married
Hazel Oberschulte in 1951. He drove a truck and worked in construction for many years.
He married
Willie Mary Taylor in May 1981.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three daughters, Linda Peace of Chapman, Cynthia Cooper of Phoenix and Barbara Diaz of Lincoln; one son, Darrel Dean of Salt Lake City; his mother, of Grand Island; two brothers, Bernard Clingerman of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Michael Clingerman of Grand Island; and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Dale) Holub of Torrence, Calif., and Judy (Mrs. Dean) Hayward of Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and one sister.
