Stanley Kovarik
BURWELL -- Stanley J. Kovarik Sr., 91, of Burwell died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m., Thursday at the church. Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church, disabled-children's agencies or the Burwell Volunteer Fire Department.
Thomas McFadden
GREELEY -- Thomas J. McFadden, 89, of Greeley died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greeley Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at the church. T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.
Carl Mieth
ROCKVILLE -- Carl Mieth, 92, of Rockville died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Congregational Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Mr. Mieth was born on July 25, 1906, in Hall County to Fredrick and Eunice (Siberly) Mieth. He was educated at Bluff Center School.
He married
Iola Harris on Sept. 29, 1927, at Central City. The couple lived on a farm near Cairo, then moved to farms near Ravenna and Loup City before moving to a farm near Rockville in 1942. He operated a maintainer for Sherman County from 1962 to 1972. They moved to Rockville in 1966.
Mr. Mieth was a member of the Rockville Fire Department and had served as the mayor of Rockville.
Survivors include one son, Dewey Mieth of Rockville; one daughter, Shirley Lighthill of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson and one brother.
Robert J. Kathman
HASTINGS -- Robert J. Kathman, 68, of Hastings died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The Rev. David F. Bourek will officiate. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel and one hour before service time Thursday at the church. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Kathman was born on June 7, 1930, at Lawrence to Edward H. and Frances A. (Reining) Kathman. He moved to the Hastings area in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from May 26, 1953, to April 23, 1955.
He married
Julane B. (Frahm) Willems on June 6, 1960. He worked for Abbott's Dairy for 21 years and later for Metz Bakery until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Third-Degree Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cynthia (Mrs. Ron) Consbruck of Giltner and Kimberly (Mrs. Craig) Arnold of Trumbull; seven grandchildren; six sisters, Marie Rosenau of Glendale, Ariz., Lucille Oxley of Hastings, Sister Parma Kathman of Rochester, Minn., Frances Klein of Roseland, Edna Wilhelm of Denver and Kathy Hoggatt of Hastings; three brothers, Ed of Hastings, Raymond "Pete" of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Vernon of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Verna Raymond
BROKEN BOW -- Verna Raymond, 88, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jim Stark will officiate. Burial will be in the Custer Center Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary.
Mrs. Raymond was born on Oct. 2, 1910, at Adams to Andrew L. and Emma (McMullen) Andersen. She attended a rural school near Adams and Grand Island Business School. She moved to Broken Bow in 1936.
She married
George Raymond on Aug. 31, 1940. They farmed south of Merna. He died on April 6, 1966.
She moved to Broken Bow in 1968 and worked at Becton Dickinson. She later worked as a cook at the Merna School and then as a dispatcher for the Broken Bow Police Department. She retired in 1975.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Custer Center Grange and Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary.
She enjoyed playing bridge and participated in the hospital bridge club marathon. She also enjoyed crocheting and baking rolls.
Survivors include one son, Tom Raymond of Japan; one daughter, Linda (Mrs. Dean) Petricek of Elkhorn; three grandchildren; one brother, Curtis Andersen of Broken Bow; and three sisters, Lois Doggett of Burwell, Letha Brown of North Platte and Carol Lewis of Grand Island.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one stepson, Floyd; two stepdaughters, Elva and Doris; one brother, Chris; and two sisters, Opal and an infant sister, Oma.
Ross Waite
WOOD RIVER -- Ross E. Waite, 73, of Wood River died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Larry Nothstine will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in the Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.
Mr. Waite was born on March 3, 1925, at Hayti, S.D., to Clyde and Clara (Jensen) Waite. He was educated at Hayti and graduated in 1943.
He entered the Navy and served on the NTC Great Lakes, Ill., USS Wolverine, USS Charger, USS Boxer and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt from Nov. 17, 1944, to April 8, 1946.
He married
Betty Zundel on Feb. 2, 1945, at Watertown, S.D. The couple moved in 1959 to Wood River, where he was a general contractor for 25 years specializing in cement work. He retired in 1990. Mrs. Waite died on July 25, 1997.
Mr. Waite was a member of American Legion Post 314.
Survivors include two sons, Terry of Elm Creek and Larry of Midwest City, Okla.; four daughters, Jane Waite and Linda (Mrs. Rick) Wiese, both of Grand Island, Barbara (Mrs. Jim) Wiltgen of Kearney and Donna (Mrs. Russell) Smith of Parker, S.D.; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ellsworth Waite of Watertown, S.D., and Doyle Waite of Altura, Minn.; and one sister, Shirley (Mrs. Al) Jewell of Puhrump, Nev.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Edward Winkelman
COMSTOCK -- Edward W. Winkelman, 85, of Comstock died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ord Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Winkelman was born on March 4, 1913, at Comstock to Louis and Louise (Kluma) Winkelman. He attended school east of Sargent through the eighth grade.
He lived with his parents and took care of them on the farm until their deaths. He always farmed in the Sargent-Comstock area.
He quit farming and moved into Comstock, where he worked for the village. He moved to Sargent Health Rehab Center on June 1, 1994.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows in Comstock for 25 years.
Survivors include one brother, Ray Winkelman of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Eva Keyser.
