Edward Zuehlke
PALMER -- Edward L. Zuehlke, 91, of Palmer died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Mike McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Palmer.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also will be from 8:30 a.m. until services Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Zuehlke was born on Feb. 7, 1907, on the family farm near Palmer to George and Josephine (Mueller) Zuehlke. He grew up and was educated at Palmer. As a young man, he helped his family on the farm and worked on area neighbors' farms. He bought his own farm in Gage County near Palmer in 1935.
He married
Edna Bahensky Kotrc on Sept. 10, 1945, at St. Libory. They farmed near St. Paul until 1985. They retired from farming but continued to live on the farm.
Mr. Zuehlke was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. He enjoyed woodworking; yard work, especially planting trees; playing cards and bowling. He loved farming and was a self-taught blacksmith.
Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Milton Kotrc of Kearney and Vernon Kotrc of Arvada, Colo.; eight step grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Schubert and Cecelia Zuehlke, both of St. Paul; and two brothers, Raymond of Palmer and Louis of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by one brother, George; and five sisters, Mary Ziller, Gustie Peterson, Lucy Baasch, Margaret Lillienthal and Ann Tracy.
Ronald Stewart
LOS ANGELES -- Ronald Floyd Stewart, 48, of Los Angeles died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church south of Ord. The Rev. James Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City cemetery with military rites by the Ord Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Visitation will be prior to services at the church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to cancer research.
Clara McCann
Clara H. McCann, 88, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Eric Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before service time.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mrs. McCann was born on Feb. 15, 1910, at Otto to John and Wilhemania (Wheling) Kunz. She grew up and was educated in the Avoca area, graduating from Avoca High School in 1932.
She married
Leo McCann on Jan. 2, 1928, at Plattsmouth. She worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings for seven and a half years. She moved to Grand Island in 1943 and worked at the veterans hospital for 21 years until retiring in 1983. Mr. McCann died on April 1, 1975.
Mrs. McCann was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Women's Circle, the Eagles Auxiliary and the National Association of Retired Federal Workers.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Ruth Yvonne McCann of St. Paul; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Freeman of Louisville.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Bob L. McCann.
Bonnie Carlson
CENTRAL CITY -- Bonnie Lee Carlson, 70, of Central City died on Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Central City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a time of sharing for family and friends at 8 p.m., Tuesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Mrs. Carlson was born on March 19, 1928, in Arnold to Adolphus "Duff" and Leona (Backes) Norgard. She was educated in Arnold, Lexington and Dannebrog and graduated from Central City High School in 1945.
She married
Eugene Hunt on June 2, 1946, in Central City. They lived in California while he was in the service. Mr. Hunt died on May 25, 1950.
She married
Ned C. Carlson on Oct. 9, 1952, in Lincoln. They lived in Central City. She worked at the Black Cat Cafe and the original Woody's. She and her husband owned and operated the Standard Oil Agency in Central City. They cleaned the Farmers National Bank for many years. She had helped her sons with their Take 5 convenience store for the last seven years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed collecting poems, quotes and other writings and compiling them in scrapbooks. She also enjoyed writing poetry, dancing, music and listening to motivational tapes.
She was awarded the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award. She and her son, Jeff, also published "BJ's Better Way," a cartoon and jingle format for giving helpful hints, in nine Nebraska newspapers.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Randy of North Platte and Barry, Jeff, Kent and Mark, all of Central City; a niece, Arneda Goerl of Archer, who lived with the Carlson family; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and three sisters, Pauline Nissen of Aurora, Shirley Martin of Central City and Barbara (Mrs. Ron) Burke of Sacramento, Calif.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marcele Norgard, Dorothy Brown and Pat Stuart; and one brother, Bob Norgard.
Grace McDonald
CENTRAL CITY -- Grace McDonald, 90, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Community Care in Central City.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grand Island City cemetery with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Community Care.
Miss McDonald was born on March 22, 1908, in Fulton, Iowa, to Harry and Susan (Atkinson) McDonald. She was raised in Iowa and attended her early years of school there before her family moved to the Grand Island area. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1925.
She was a clerk at the old Kaufman's Department Store for about 13 years and then moved to Topeka, Kan., where she worked in a doctor's office until retiring. Following her retirement, Miss McDonald worked as an aide in a nursing home for about five years.
She then moved to Grand Island to live with her sister. She moved to Community Care in Central City in 1992.
While living at Community Care, she helped by moving patients around in their wheelchairs.
She is survived by a sister, Pauline Lofgren of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Les and Bob; and one sister, Carol Burst.
Judge Robert Flory
FREMONT -- Judge Robert Flehr Flory, 80, of Fremont died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home in Fremont. The Rev. Robert Flory will officiate.
Closed-casket visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation.
Mr. Flory was born on July 19, 1918, in St. Edward to Robert D. and Elva (Lehr) Flory. He graduated from St. Edward High School in 1936 and received a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Nebraska in 1940. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1942.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. During World War II, he received the European, African and Middle Eastern Service Medals, the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Unit Badge.
He also served during the Korean War in 1952. He was a member of the U.S. Army Caterpillar Club.
He married
Joanne Beltzer on Oct. 21, 1944, in Grand Island.
He practiced law in Fremont from 1946 to 1961 and served as district judge in Fremont from 1961 to 1977, when he retired.
He was a charter member of the Nebraska Supreme Court Committee on Practice and Procedure, chairman of Fremont's first planning commission, member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, Fremont American Legion, 40 and Eight, St. James Episcopal Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 200 and the Fremont Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Anne Osterloh of Wheatridge, Colo.; one son, William of Lincoln; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Voseipka; and one brother, William Flory.
