Howard Newton
ALBION -- Howard Keith Newton, 83, of Albion died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at Lutheran Medical Center at Wheat Ridge, Colo.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Teyrl Otto will officiate. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial cemetery in Lincoln.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Newton was born July 5, 1915, in Inavale to Robert and Julia (Wilson) Newton. He graduated from Franklin Public School in 1933 and from the University of Nebraska Ag College in 1937. Following graduation, he worked as the Greeley County agent in Greeley.
He married
Eleanor Hansen on June 8, 1940, in Red Cloud. He later worked in Albion as the Boone County agent. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served as a sergeant until he was discharged in 1946. He later worked as the county agent in Seward and at Jones National Bank.
The couple moved to Albion in 1956, where he worked at the Albion National Bank until 1960. They then moved to Gothenburg, where he worked at the Gothenburg State Bank. In 1965, they returned to Albion, where he worked at Albion National Bank until retiring in 1975. The couple spent their winters in Sun City, Ariz.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Albion, and served in the choir, church board, and was the director of Loup Public Power. He was also a member of Kiwanis, American Legion Post 162 of Albion, Albion Masonic Lodge 78 AF & AM, and Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol (Mrs. Larry) Hansen of Arvada, Colo.; a son, David of Coral Gables, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a sister, Margaret LeMaster of Tekahah.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dwight and Eugene.
Thelma Peterson
STROMSBURG -- Thelma B. Peterson, 86, of Stromsburg died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at York General Hospital.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Stromsburg Baptist Church. The Rev. Duane Tweeten will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Palmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Peterson was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Fremont to Andrew J. and Venice (Liebee) Blazer. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1927. She taught school at District 30 for two years.
She married
Severt W. Peterson on May 26, 1931, in Glenwood, Iowa. They farmed near Stromsburg.
She was a member of the Women's Club, Friendly Family Club and church circle.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Severt Jr. of Marquette; two daughters, Maurine Mansourian of Troy, N.Y., and Betty (Mrs. Stanley) Larson of Stromsburg; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson.
Gladys G. Smith
ST. PAUL -- Gladys G. Smith, 85, of St. Paul died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Don Lovell will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery at Monson, Mass.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Baptist Church, the Alzheimer's Association or St. Francis Hospice.
Mrs. Smith was born July 13, 1913, near St. Paul to Edwin and Alma (Larson) Berggren. She attended District 56 school in Howard County and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1930. She attended St. Paul Business College.
She worked in Omaha for a short time as a secretary stenographer for an insurance claims office. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she was a secretary and later a supervisor of the stenographic section for the Department of Agriculture. She moved to Boston in 1941, where she held a supervisory job with the regional office of the Department of Defense, Health and Welfare.
She married
Emilek J. Smith on Jan. 18, 1942, in Henniker, N.H. She later worked in Springfield, Mass., as a secretary to the Commander of the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station until retirement. She then moved to Grand Island and later to St. Paul in 1997.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Monson, Mass.
Survivors include a brother, Lloyd Berggren of St. Paul; two sisters, Eunice (Mrs. Charles) Fenster of Gering and Ruby (Mrs. Lowell) Hall of Talequah, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Douglas; and a sister, Mildred Enevoldsen.
Cathryn Schachta
DENVER -- Cathryn D. Schachta, 80, of Denver, formerly of St. Paul, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.
Services are pending at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Alfonso Cuin-Mejia
Alfonso Cuin-Mejia, 29, of Grand Island died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Julio A. Ibarra-Tario will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Guatemala.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Cuin-Mejia was born on April 27, 1969, at Joyaba Quiche, Guatemala, to Tomas Cuin and Josefa Mejia. He came to Grand Island in late 1996.
Survivors include his wife, one son, two daughters, his mother, two brothers and four sisters, all of Guatemala.
He was preceded in death by his father.
George Meier
George L. Meier, 84, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Revs. Martin Schmidt, John Reehl and Robert Harms will officiate. A family prayer service will be at 9:45 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Meier was born on Feb. 7, 1914, at Grand Island to John and Anna (Lohman) Meier. He grew up and was educated at Grand Island.
He married
Alma Johanna Uden on April 15, 1941, at Grand Island. The couple lived on a farm east of Grand Island. He remained active in farming until he passed the farm on to his son.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; one son, John L. Meier of Grand Island; three daughters, Betty (Mrs. Gerald) McCan of Omaha, Carol (Mrs. David) Caspersen of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Sharon Meier of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Alma Schultz of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and Ann Pollack of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Carl Meier, William Meier, Edward Meier, Fred Meier and Walter Meier; and three sisters, Matilda Quandt, Emma Wiemer and Clara Klein.
Thomas Lanigan
Glendale, Calif. -- Thomas Peter "Buzz" Lanigan II, 76, of Glendale, Calif., died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in Camarillo, Calif.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart cemetery in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate.
T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lanigan was born on June 27, 1922, in Greeley to T.W. and Gertrude (Swain) Lanigan. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., in 1939 and from Notre Dame and Creighton University.
After receiving a Bronze Star for his service in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II, he went on to earn his juris doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law.
He was known for his music, sense of humor and story telling.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail (Mrs. Mel) Bannon of Camarillo, Calif., and Karen (Mrs. O.L.) Puttler of McKinleyville, Calif.; a son, Tom Lanigan III of La Cresenta, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
