Jerre Van Steenberg
SCOTTSBLUFF -- Jerre (Lewis) Van Steenberg, 77, of Scottsbluff died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff. The Rev. Lewis Warren will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the church and Theatre West.
Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Van Steenberg was born on July 2, 1921, in Omaha to Merrill and Eva (Bragg) Lewis. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island.
She earned her bachelor of science at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo., in 1943 and her master's from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957. She was an associate professor at the University of Nebraska College of Home Economics from 1954 to 1964.
She married
Richard M. Van Steenberg in 1964, moved to Scottsbluff and established Jerre Van Steenberg Designs. She was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers until her death.
She spent many hours volunteering in community activities and her church and entertaining her friends.
Survivors include one son, Taylor Withrow of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Eve Withrow of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Nan Hemme of Denver; three stepdaughters, Carol (Mrs. Art) Van Steenberg Kuhn, Ann (Mrs. Fred) Van Steenberg Setterberg and Vicki (Mrs. Tim) Van Steenberg Williams, all of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren and one step grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Teresa Wells
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Teresa Josephine Wells, 68, of Charlottesville, Va., died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at the Church of the Incarnation. The Rev. William LaFratta will officiate. Burial will be in Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville.
Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wells was born on March 15, 1930, to James and Ida (Schneider) Dougherty. She was raised in York and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1948. She attended York College and the University of Nebraska. She taught in Howard, Hall and York counties.
She married
Kenneth Lee Wells in 1955.
She was active in church events and interested in education.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Gregory Wells of Charlottesville; two grandchildren; one sister, Idamae R. Rooney of Lincoln; and one brother, Dennis D. Dougherty of Lincoln.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Hansrote and Rose Vuco; and three brothers, John, James and Joseph Dougherty.
Peter Janzen
AURORA -- Peter R. Janzen, 79, of Aurora, formerly of Hampton, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Assembly of God Church in Aurora. The Rev. James Garfield will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Hampton.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Janzen was born on Jan. 12, 1919, near LeHigh, Kan., to Peter C. and Susie (Regier) Janzen. He grew up and attended school in Kansas.
He married
Martha Regier on May 21, 1939, in Henderson. He farmed with his father until 1941. He moved in 1942 to Hampton, where he also farmed.
Mr. Janzen lived in California and worked for a cannery. They moved to Wisconsin in 1946 to farm and returned to Nebraska in 1947 to farm until 1967. For several years after leaving farming, they again lived in Wisconsin, and he worked for a cannery until his retirement. They continued to live in Wisconsin until Mrs. Janzen's death in 1982. He then lived in Aurora and had lived at Hamilton Manor since 1986.
He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Aurora.
Survivors include three sons, Richard of Hampton, John D. of Aurora and Don of Marquette; one daughter, Janice (Mrs. Duane) Zech of Prairie du Sac, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ted of Aurora, Herman of Blue Springs, Mo., and John of Inman, Kan.; and four sisters, Esther Fisher of Hillsboro, Kan., Ruby Sundgren of McPherson, Kan., Susie (Mrs. John) Buller of Henderson and Margaret (Mrs. Calvin) Kelman of Kansas.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Abe, Dan, Sam and Henry; one sister, Katherine Fast; and three infant brothers and sisters.
Lamont Schmadeke
ALBION -- Lamont Norman Schmadeke, 82, of Albion died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion. The Revs. Gilbert Karges and Larry Spomer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Schmadeke was born on Oct. 9, 1915, at Newman Grove to John and Julia (Nordgren) Schmadeke. He was educated in rural schools in the Newman Grove area.
He married
Anna Mae Beckwith on May 26, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Albion. They lived and farmed in the Albion area. He enjoyed working on the farm and taking care of the farming business. He also enjoyed training and riding horses and attending his grandchildren's activities.
He was a member of Kiwanis. He enjoyed helping his wife with the Parade Committee and the Boone County Fair, and he loved playing baseball. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Albion.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jane Marie (Mrs. John) Aalborg of Lincoln; one son, Ralph Lamont of Albion; four grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Schmadeke of Lincoln; and one sister, Irene (Mrs. Willard) Jones of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Lawrence and an infant brother, LeRoy; and one sister, Marge Copple.
Arthur Sebesta
ORD -- Arthur Sebesta, 78, of Ord died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
Mr. Sebesta was born on Feb. 25, 1920, near Taylor to Josef and Francis (Elsik) Sebesta. He attended Golden Rod School in Loup County and Taylor High School.
He married
Ellen Neel on Feb. 25, 1942, in Ord. The couple lived near Taylor, Burwell and Ord. He also lived in western Nebraska and Idaho, working at sugar beet factories there. He moved to a farm east of Ord in 1955 and lived there until his death.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.
Survivors include one son, Gerald of Grand Island; one daughter, Ellen (Mrs. Keith) Gydesen of Scotia; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Otto of Nampa, Idaho; and one sister, Minnie Viner of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie and Maynard; one brother, Fred; an infant brother; and two sisters, Francis Graham and Mary Adams.
Roland Stange
CAIRO -- Roland Errol Stange, 72, of Cairo died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery in Cairo.
There will be no visitation. He was cremated. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or the United Methodist Church in Cairo.
Mr. Stange was born on Sept. 28, 1925, in Grand Island to Harry and Pearl (Hiddelson) Stange. He grew up on a farm two miles east of Cairo and lived there until his death.
He attended Cairo High School, graduating in 1943. He became an accomplished pianist, playing in area dance bands. He helped run the Cairo Theater with his brother and assisted part time at Apfel Funeral Home.
At age 18, he start caring for his mother, who became bedridden. He later became a Red Cross instructor, teaching emergency medical aid. He also tuned pianos and helped his invalid mother with her floral service by delivering bouquets and arrangements.
He farmed for 55 years until he retired, later caring for his father when he became bedridden.
After his parents' deaths in the 1970s, he worked at Leon Plastics in Alda for a couple of years.
He enjoyed sending cards and corresponding with relatives and friends -- a tradition started by his parents.
Survivors include one brother, Gerald of Moorhead, Minn.; and two special caregivers, Delmar and Caroline Eggers of Cairo.
