U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Gale Klawonn

HASTINGS -- Gale F. Klawonn, 76, of Hastings died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Gordon Harmon will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Klawonn was born on Aug. 8, 1922, in Bradshaw. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Dec. 29, 1942, to Oct. 28, 1945.

He had lived in Hastings for 20 years, moving from Grand Island. He was owner/operator of 80 Taxi Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Marty McCallie of Chattanooga, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Gregory Lehn

BOELUS -- Gregory D. Lehn, 41, of Boelus died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in a boating accident at Little Sherman, a small lake north of Boelus.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper will officiate. Burial will be in the Soulville cemetery at Boelus.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Lehn was born on May 8, 1957, in Ord to Darrel and Julia (Einspahr) Lehn. He grew up in the North Loup and Arcadia areas before moving with his family to Boelus in 1967. He attended schools at Arcadia, Boelus and Centura, where he graduated in 1976.

He studied auto body repair at Central Community College in Hastings. He lived in Boulder, Colo., for a year before returning to Boelus. He worked as a sound technician for three bands for four years.

He married Jolene "Jody" Thomas on June 6, 1987, at Boelus. The couple lived in Boelus. He had worked at Leon Plastics in Alda since January 1987.

He enjoyed fishing, car races, Nebraska football, traveling and Fourth of July parties. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Boelus.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, of Boelus; three brothers, Curtis of Boelus, Richard of St. Libory and Stanley of Grand Island; and one sister, Connie (Mrs. Kenneth) Schlund of LaVista.

He was preceded in death by his father; an infant brother, Kenneth; and another brother, Ronald.

Ruby Zimmerman

BROKEN BOW -- Ruby Catherine Zimmerman, 82, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Sandhills Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center.

She married Kenneth Moseley in December 1938. Mr. Moseley died in 1959.

She taught school and received her bachelor of science degree from Kearney State College in 1961. She spent 23 years of her teaching career in the first grade at North Park in Broken Bow. She taught school for 39 years.

She married Lester Zimmerman on March 29, 1964. She retired from teaching in May 1982. After one year, she was a teacher's aide for two years at the Tappan Valley District 75 School. She retired in 1986.

Orin Quandt

DAVENPORT -- Orin M. "Whitey" Quandt, 56, of Davenport died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Davenport. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran cemetery at Kiowa.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport. Further visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and two hours before services at the church.

A memorial has been established.

Mr. Quandt was born on Dec. 31, 1941, at Grand Island to Arthur and Edna Quandt. He attended Grand Island District 56 School through the sixth grade, Trinity Lutheran School at Grand Island through the eighth grade and Walnut Junior High and Grand Island Senior High School. He graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward on Aug. 19, 1966.

He married Linda Kay Dein on June 5, 1966, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island.

He taught elementary school at Kiowa from 1964 to 1966 and Superior from 1967 to 1996. He taught art, physical education, coached wrestling, refereed for area wrestling tournaments and helped start many wrestling programs.

He and his wife purchased the grocery store in Davenport in 1979.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Davenport, Davenport Education Association, National Education Association and Nebraska State Education Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carrie (Mrs. Eric) Hogeland of Crete and Kendra Quandt of Lincoln; two grandchildren; three brothers, Walter of Irvine, Calif., Howard of O'Neill and Arthur of Grand Island; and one sister, Jackie (Mrs. Larry) of Grand Island.

Nicole Schlueter

BEATRICE -- Nicole Marie Schlueter, 13, of Beatrice, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in an accident at Summerfield, Kan.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Summerfield, Kan. Burial will be in the Summerfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wherry Brothers Mortuary in Pawnee City.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Nicole was born on April 11, 1985, in Lincoln to Randy and Karen Schlueter. She attended Zeman Elementary School. Her family moved in 1993 to Grand Island, where she attended Engleman Elementary School and Westridge Middle School.

She was a student at Beatrice Middle School.

She was an avid reader, excellent student and participated in volleyball, basketball, track and field and softball.

She was active in church youth groups, youth choir and bell choir. She also was in 4-H, as well as playing the flute and collecting elephants.

Survivors include her parents; one sister, Abby; one brother, Ethan; grandparents, Bob and Mary Ellen Frazee of Summerfield, Kan., and Evelyn Schlueter of Wisner.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Edmund Schlueter.

Walter Tvrdik

LINCOLN -- Walter Tvrdik, 80, of Lincoln, formerly of Comstock, died of leukemia Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his home.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Douglas Grove cemetery in Comstock. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate. Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Comstock United Methodist Church.

Mr. Tvrdik was born on July 18, 1918, west of Comstock to Frank and Anna (Voracek) Tvrdik. He attended school in Comstock and graduated in 1938 from Comstock High School, where he was active in basketball, football and track.

He married Marguerite Duryea on June 3, 1940, in Ord. He farmed in the Comstock area and in Underwood, Iowa, for 60 years.

They lived west of Comstock until 1949, when they moved to Underwood, Iowa. He returned to Sargent and farmed at Comstock in 1959. They lived there for four years and moved back to Iowa in 1963. He returned to Comstock in 1991 and retired from the farm in 1994. He moved to Lincoln in 1996 to be near his daughters and doctors.

They attended the RLDS and Methodist churches.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jackie (Mrs. Larry) Anderson of Lincoln and Jiri Tvrdik of Lincoln; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ben, Bob, Frank and Edward; and two sisters, Helen Kotrc and Agnes Walters.
