Linda Smith
BROKEN BOW -- Linda Leone Smith, 50, of Broken Bow died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.
Miss Smith was born on July 13, 1948, in Broken Bow to William M. "Bill" and Pauline (Casteel) Smith. She was raised on a ranch near Dunning. She attended Halsey-Dunning Public School, graduating in 1968. She then moved to Broken Bow.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow and the Broken Bow Does. She enjoyed helping others.
Survivors include her mother, of Broken Bow; two sisters, Deb Smith of Broken Bow and Valarie (Mrs. Mike) Halpin of Beaver Crossing.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Ronald Watts
WOOD RIVER -- Ronald Watts, 29, of Wood River died of natural causes Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending with Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Murl Zikmund
ORD -- Murl May Zikmund, 92, of Ord died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be before service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Zikmund was born on April 21, 1906, in Valley County near Arcadia to William Allen and Susan Una (Hul) Bartlett. When she was a child, her family moved to Ord, where she was educated. She graduated from Ord High School in 1923. She then worked for a law firm in Ord until she was married.
She married
George Zikmund on April 18, 1936, in Bartlett. The couple farmed northwest of Ord throughout their marriage. Mr. Zikmund died on May 15, 1991, and Mrs. Zikmund continued to live on the farm.
She was a member of the Ord First Presbyterian Church, where she was involved in various activities. She enjoyed tatting, playing cards, cribbage and cooking.
Survivors include one son, Dale Zikmund of Kearney; one daughter, Susan Bute of Yuma, Colo.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Daniel Bartlett of Ord.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Gilmore and Helen Nelson.
Lois Giger
GUIDE ROCK -- Lois B. Giger, 86, of Guide Rock died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at the Franklin County Hospital in Franklin.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock. The Rev. Alvin E. Trucano will officiate. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Giger was born on Sept. 12, 1912, near Guide Rock in Webster County to Charles and Hazel (Finney) Reeve. She graduated from Eckley High School in 1928 and then taught at District 16 School for a year.
She married
Wilbert M. Giger on March 1, 1930, in Mankato, Kan. They farmed west of Guide Rock. Mr. Giger died on July 11, 1985.
Mrs. Giger was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include a daughter, Margene Stueven of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Grand Island; two sons, Wayne Giger of Gibbon and James Giger of Guide Rock; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leone Fleharty of Hastings and Marcille Strobl of Blue Hill.
Paul Marler
DOUGLAS, Wyo. -- Paul H. Marler, 82, of Douglas, Wyo., died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Michael Manor in Douglas after a brief illness.
Services were on Monday at Converse Funeral Chapel in Douglas. The Rev. Howard Dixon officiated. Burial was in Douglas Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Douglas Senior Citizens Center.
Mr. Marler was born on Sept. 21, 1916, in Aurora to William Q. and Susie (Lantzer) Marler. He was raised and educated in Aurora before leaving to attend Southwestern Bible School in Enid, Okla. He graduated in 1940.
He married
Margaret Miller in 1942 at Ainsworth. He pastored churches in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. He was a resident of Douglas for 44 years.
After retiring from the ministry, he owned and operated the family service station and Marler's Arctic and Cycle Shop for 26 years. He received numerous business achievement awards for outstanding sales and service. He retired from business in 1986.
He enjoyed snowmobiling and visiting with friends and customers.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Edith Stepanick of Douglas and Susan Kosine of Sheridan, Wyo.; one son, Richard Marler of Douglas; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Weedin of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Lylas Gericke
Lylas M. Gericke, 87, of Grand Island died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at the Lakeview Nursing Center of Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in Hansen.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Children's Hospital, the Tehama Temple in Hastings or to the family.
Mrs. Gericke was born Aug. 16, 1911, to Donald and Minnie (Harrell) Brewer at Hastings. She was raised in Doniphan and received her education in Doniphan, Hansen and Hastings schools.
On Feb. 12, 1928, she married
Richard "Dick" Gericke at Hastings. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1930. She worked as a clerk at Liberty Cleaners and as a nursing assistant for Dr. Riley. She then worked as office manager for Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home until her retirement in 1975.
After retirement, she worked part-time at the gift shop at Stuhr Museum until 1993. Mr. Gericke preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1969.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed dogs, fishing, her family and her pets.
Survivors include a son, John Gericke of Grand Island; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son and one brother.
Dana Berryman
SCOTIA -- Dana Berryman, 82, of Scotia died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Howard County Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Scotia Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Scotia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton and at 9 a.m. Wednesday prior to the service.
