U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Lynn Scott

ST. PAUL -- Lynn H. Scott, 98, of St. Paul died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Mr. Scott was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. Ellen Campbell will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Rose Hill cemetery at Palmer.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Floyd Turek Sr.

GIBBON -- Floyd Francis Turek Sr., 84, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at his home northwest of Gibbon.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton with the Rev. Ray Kosmicki officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Turek was born on Oct. 28, 1914, in rural Ashton to John and Michalina (Spotanski) Turek. He grew up in rural Sherman County and attended public schools and St. Francis Catholic School in Ashton.

He entered the U.S. Army on June 25, 1943, and served at Shick Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, during World War II. He was discharged on Jan. 30, 1946.

He married Mary Rosella Bujewske on June 13, 1946, at St. Mathias Church in Muscatine, Iowa. The couple moved to rural Wood River, where they farmed until 1955. They then moved to Gibbon. Mr. Turek was a farmer his entire life.

Mr. Turek was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. His hobbies included fishing, playing cards and enjoying nature. He received a papal apostolic blessing in 1992 for his long support of the work of the Benedictine Mission House in Scuyler.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Mary Dukesherer of Bayard, Rita (Mrs. Mark) Czaplewski of Grand Island, Cathy (Mrs. Mike) Spellman of Shelton and Alice (Mrs. Dan) Quick of Grand Island; six sons, Floyd Jr. of Gibbon, John of Washington, D.C., Thomas C. of Kearney, Charlie of Kearney, Joe of Gibbon and Robert of North Platte.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a sister, Anna Ziola; five brothers, Steve, Cash, Joe, Ben and Eugene; and two stepsisters, Julia Spontanski and Gertrude Webb.

Robert Braasch

YORK -- Robert R. "Bob" Braasch, 77, of York died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at the Hearthstone Care Center in York.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in York. The Rev. Larry Michael-Rush will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at York with military graveside honors by Bolton American Legion Post 19.

Lewis Funeral Chapels of York is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Braasch was born on Aug. 27, 1921, at Ansley to Charles H. and Gussie May (Hubble) Braasch. He attended school at Pierce and Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He graduated from Norfolk Junior College, Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne and graduated with distinguished honors from the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science.

He married Bette "Elizabeth" Mosier on March 16, 1946, at Norfolk. The couple entered the funeral profession in 1951 and purchased Lage Funeral Home in York on Feb. 15, 1956. They operated funeral homes in York, Henderson and Gresham and had a partnership in the funeral home at Stromsburg.

Mrs. Braasch died on Aug. 4, 1981.

He married Leona "Lee" Sedlacek Berggren on Jan. 30, 1982, at York. He retired on April 1, 1995.

He was past president of the Noon Sertoma Club in York, past master of York Lodge 56 A.F. & A.M. and past district president of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association.

He had been a member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, York Area Chamber of Commerce, York Rite Masonic Orders, Sesostris Shrine Temple of Lincoln, Meridian Shrine Club, Grace Chapter 87 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Bolton American Legion Post 19, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge 1024, Toastmasters and National Funeral Directors Association.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and Big Red football.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dr. Bradley O. of York and Bryson I. of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one daughter, Tara B. (Mrs. Thomas) Ritacco of Los Alamitos, Calif.; four stepchildren, Greg Berggren of Marshalltown, Iowa, Todd and Ryan Berggren, both of Stromsburg, and Michael Berggren of Lincoln; six grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles of Norfolk and Bernard of North Platte.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Benjamin Braasch.

Almerna Harsh

PURDUM -- Almerna Harsh, 79, of Purdum died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Due to the weather, services were postponed until 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ in Purdum. The Revs. David Hansen and Linda Martin will officiate. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and to the St. Francis oncology department.

Irene Loescher

Irene F. Loescher, 85, of Grand Island died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grand Island Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice.

Mrs. Loescher was born March 25, 1913, to Otis and Nellie (Garton) Wood in Crete. She moved to Grand Island as an infant, where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Grand Island Senior High School.

She married Walter Loescher on July 16, 1934, in Hastings. They lived in Grand Island, where she worked at Fonner Park during the racing season for 25 years. She also worked at home. Mr. Loescher died on March 8, 1980.

She was an avid bowler. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, arts and crafts.

Survivors include one son, Jack of Grand Island; two grandchildren; two-step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Lyda Fotinos

SHELTON -- Lyda Fotinos, 72, of Shelton died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon and Shelton.

Laura McCain

ERICSON -- Laura Marie McCain, 79, of Ericson died Thursday at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Ericson. The Rev. Cindy Altstadt will officiate. Burial will be in Bartlett City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Wheeler County Fire and Rescue Squad.

Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCain was born March 18, 1919, to John and Elsie (Jordan) Oetter in Bliss in Holt County.

She married Wayne McCain on Aug. 30, 1937, in Bartlett. She helped her husband by driving a truck. She also worked as a cook at the Ericson Sale Barn.

She was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Dale of Ericson, Willie of Ord, Ray of Grand Island and Scott of Fremont; one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Bob) Harris of Ogallala; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Benjamin Oetter of Denton, Texas, and George Oetter and Kenneth Oetter, both of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Michael.
