U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Sally Shada

WAYNE -- Sally Shada, 88, of Wayne, formerly of Loup City, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald Urban will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic cemetery in Ashton.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City with a 4 p.m. Altar Society sodality rosary at the funeral home.

Further visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Polish Heritage Center in Ashton or the church.

Mrs. Shada was born on Dec. 16, 1909, at Ashton to Ignac and Honorata (Maciejewski) Haremza. She grew up near Ashton and attended Districts 6 and 54 schools. She moved with her family to Loup City in 1926.

She graduated from Loup City High School in 1928. Following school, she worked for three years at Croft General Mercantile in Loup City. She then attended Capital Beauty School in Omaha.

She married Charles Shada on Dec. 18, 1971.

Survivors include cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Jim Amsberry

ANSLEY -- Jim Amsberry, 63, of rural Ansley died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Ansley. The Rev. Jim Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Julia Payne

ERICSON -- Julia Marie Payne, 87, of Ericson died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Bartlett United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cynthia Altstadt will officiate. Burial will be in the Bartlett Cemetery.

Visitation will be prior to service time Monday at the church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Bartlett and Ericson United Methodist churches.

'Linda' Gordon

Mary "Linda" Gordon, 52, of 2821 Brentwood Blvd. died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Charles cemetery at St. Mary, Ky.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Rose Leavitt

WOOD RIVER -- Rose I. Leavitt, 78, of the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Leo) Evans of Grand Island and Betty (Mrs. Edward) Morris of Goodland, Kan.; seven stepdaughters, Ann, Lydia, Martha, Ida, Margaret, Mabel and Agnes; one stepson, Bill; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley; three stepsons, Alfred, George and Joe; one grandson; one brother; and two sisters.

Gerard Micek

ST. EDWARD -- Gerard Micek, 68, of St. Edward died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services are pending with Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.

Hazel Paine

LINCOLN -- Hazel Paine, 88, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, July 31, 1998, in Lincoln.

Private family graveside services will be on Saturday at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate.

Mrs. Paine was cremated. There will be no visitation. Roper and Sons Mortuary of Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island or Capitol Humane Society of Lincoln.

Mrs. Paine was born on Jan. 31, 1910, in Higginsville, Mo., to the Rev. Samuel and Ida (Groebe) Beechner.

Elizabeth Paschang

WEST POINT -- Elizabeth M. Paschang, 100, of St. Joseph's Retirement Community at West Point, died July 30, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital at West Point.

Services were Monday at St. Anthony's Parish at St. Charles in rural West Point. The Rev. Malachy Riley officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bishop Lawrence J. McNamara offered the graveside prayers. Ben Stalp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 13, 1898, at Hemingford to Casper and Gertrude Paschang. She graduated from St. Anthony Parish School at St. Charles in rural West Point.

She was a housekeeper to her brothers, Bishop John Paschang and the late Rev. Anthony Paschang.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and Guild.

Survivors include one brother, Bishop John L. Paschang of West Point and one sister, Ann Peter of Columbia, Mo.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Amelia Peterson

YORK -- Amelia M. Peterson, 91, of York died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in York.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Metz Chapel in York. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pilger Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in York.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1906, at Pilger to Walter A. and Bertha (Zahn) Peterson. She graduated from York High School in 1923, attended York College and Kearney State Teachers College and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1933. She did graduate work at Northwestern University for a master of arts in music education.

She taught in two York rural schools, Districts 29 and 79, for three years. She taught at Goehner for five years and became high school principal there. After attaining her graduate degree, she taught at Waco for two years, Pawnee City for seven years and Nebraska City in vocal music for 29 years. She retired in 1971.

She was named Nebraska City Rotarian of the Year, Nebraska City Citizen of the Year and York Educator of the Year in Delta Kappa Gamma. She was named to the Nebraska Music Educators Hall of Fame.

She belonged to Chapter A, PEO; Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Chapter, from which she received a Service to Education Award; Nebraska State Retired Teachers Association; and Nebraska City Educators. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York and the Green Thumb Garden Club.

Former Nebraska City High School choral students surprised Miss Peterson on Oct. 17, 1997, with a day in her honor, which they called "Miss Pete Day." She received a special plaque in her honor.

There are no survivors in her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Evadena Peterson of York.
