Joseph Riss
RAPID CITY, S.D. -- Joseph J. Riss, 79, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Grand Island, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at his home.
Services were on Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Rapid City. The Rev. Dennis Riss officiated. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Dialysis Unit at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Mr. Riss was born on Sept. 6, 1918, at Grand Island to John A. and Amelia (Ehlers) Riss. He grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Phillips High School in 1937. While in high school, he broke the pole vault record and played baseball. He played minor league baseball with the Cardinals and the Sioux Falls, S.D., Canaries from 1938 to 1941.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 through 1945. He instructed cadets at West Point, N.Y., in advanced pilot training and was training for combat in the B-17 and B-29 bombers when World War II ended in 1945.
He and his brother, Royal, started Riss Brothers Millwork in 1948. The business continues today with four of his sons.
He was a longtime member of Elks Lodge 1187, Knights of Columbus and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. His most enjoyment in later years had been his prize-winning horticultured yard.
He married
Alice Mackey in Newburgh, N.Y., in 1944. She died in 1986.
He married
Helen Donnelly in 1987 in Rapid City.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, Joe Riss Jr., Leslie Riss, Mike Riss and John Riss, all of Rapid City, S.D., Steve Riss of Gillette, Wyo., and the Rev. Dennis Riss of Lemmon, S.D.; five stepsons, Brian Donnelly, Dennis Donnelly and Steve Donnelly, all of Rapid City, Michael Donnelly of Poulsbo, Wash., and Doug Donnelly of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and two sisters, Javene Mundt of Spearfish, S.D., and Helen Seim of Grand Island.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Royal.
'Bea' Van Winkle
SAN DIEGO -- Beatrice "Bea" Ruth Van Winkle, 67, of San Diego, formerly of Grand Island, died July 22, 1998.
Services were on July 28 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Diego. Burial was in El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.
Mrs. Van Winkle was born on Jan. 8, 1931, in Salt Lake City to Robert C. and Laura (Hansen) Binkerd. She grew up and was educated in Salt Lake City.
She moved to California, where she met Ardona Van Winkle of Burwell when he was serving in the U.S. Navy. They were married
on March 6, 1952, in Yuma, Ariz.
They lived in Ord and Grand Island in 1954 and 1955. They moved to Salt Lake City and then to Burbank, Calif., where they lived for most of their married
life. After retirement, they lived in Bakersfield and then San Diego.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Diane (Mrs. Don) McCall of Bakersfield, Calif., Robyn (Mrs. Barry) Levy of San Diego and Lorrie (Mrs. Terry) Rockney of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; two sons, Ardona Jr. of San Diego and Randy of Triedberg, Germany; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Binkerd of Salt Lake City.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Lucille Beran
Lucille M. Beran, 73, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday at the church.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Beran was born on Aug. 3, 1925, at Salix, Iowa, to Gilbert Sr. and Helen (Ricks) Fortin.
She grew up and attended school at Salix, graduating from St. Joseph's Catholic High School. She graduated as a registered nurse from St. Catherine's School of Nursing in Omaha in 1948.
She married
Joseph F. Beran on June 25, 1949, at Salix, Iowa. They moved to Grand Island in 1951. She worked for Parkside Nursing Home and then Sperry-New Holland. She later worked at the Nebraska Veterans Home and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
She retired on May 20, 1989. She enjoyed cooking and fishing.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliaries.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Beran and Doug Beran, both of Grand Island; three daughters, Marge Beran, Pam (Mrs. Randy) Kendall and Karla Beran, all of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Helen Chaussee of Vancouver, Wash.; and one brother, Gilbert Fortin Jr. of Sioux City, Iowa.
Her husband died on July 27, 1967.
She also was preceded in death by one grandson; one brother, Donald Fortin; and one sister, LouAnn Fortin.
Fredrick Boltz
Fredrick E. Boltz, 67, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Viola Christensen
Viola "Vi" E. Christensen, 78, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Rahwahdt will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Survivors include one son, Roger of Grand Island; four daughters, Kathy (Mrs. Rod) Hansen of Hastings, Tina (Mrs. Roger) Miller of Omaha, Kaya (Mrs. Andres) Huertas of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Kim McGill of Los Alamos, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Hentzen and Lillian Eberspacher, both of Seward.
Lucyle Hamner
GENOA -- Lucyle C. Hamner, 81, of Genoa, formerly of Monroe, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the Genoa Community Hospital/LTC.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Monroe United Methodist Church. The Rev. Eric Parker will officiate. Burial will be in the Friend Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Anson Funeral Home in Genoa and from 8:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Genoa Community Hospital/LTC, the church or the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Hamner was born on July 1, 1917, in Hartford, Kan., to Fred and Laura (Ziegler) Truelove. After her mother's death, Mrs. Hamner moved to Monroe at the age of 6 and was raised by her grandparents.
She attended schools in Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School in 1936.
She married
Kenneth "Bud" Farrar on May 12, 1939.
She married
Charles Lewis Hamner on July 31, 1960.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Mueller of Lincoln; one son, Jon Farrar of Lincoln; one stepson, Charles Hamner of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Truelove of Hartford, Kan.; four half brothers; and five half sisters.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; one son, Tom Farrar of Norfolk; three sisters, two brothers and one half sister.
