Harold Henke
OMAHA -- Harold H. Henke, 78, of Omaha, formerly of Scotia, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Immanuel Medical Care Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be from at 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Henke was born on April 21, 1920, on the family farm south of Greeley to Frank Sr.
and Laura (Moeller) Henke. He was educated at rural schools in the area. He graduated from Scotia High School.
He then worked with his father on the family farm until 1948, when he moved to Omaha. He worked in building construction in Omaha until his retirement. For the last 12 years, he had lived at the Oakgrove Rehabilitation and Health Center in Omaha.
He was a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Cleaver of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Anna Roberts of Provo, Utah; and one brother, Frank Henke of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Lyions and Lucille Lyions.
Herbert Engleman
VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Herbert J. Engleman, 99, of Vancouver, Wash., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Vancouver.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Gideons International.
Mr. Engleman was born on Aug. 30, 1899, on a farm near Grand Island to Ephriam and Sally (Stadden) Engleman.
He grew up and was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1918. On the day after he graduated, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in France during World War I and was discharged in July 1919.
He married
Glenys Hixenbaugh on July 22, 1923, at Cheyenne, Wyo. The couple lived in Grand Island from 1923 to 1926, and he attended Grand Island College. He received his bachelor of arts from Kearney State College in 1934 and his master of arts from the University of Wyoming at Laramie in 1941.
He taught in rural Wyoming schools in Goshen and Laramie counties in 1926, was principal and taught in consolidated schools at Golden Prairie and Albin and was superintendent in Albin.
The last 22 of his 39 years in education were spent in Cheyenne as principal of Corlette, Chaplin and Pioneer Park elementary schools and Johnson Junior High.
After retiring in 1966, he was an active volunteer. He organized the one-to-one program for underprivileged children and supervised 25 volunteers, as well as teaching one child. He also volunteered three hours a week at the Veterans Affairs hospital, worked with the Boy Scouts and taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church.
The Exchange Club presented him with the Book of Golden Deeds award. He was a member of the Lions Club, Gideons International and Prison Ministry.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Schauer of Vancouver, Betty (Mrs. Christian) Weintz of St. Paul, Minn., and Barbara Erb of Cupertino, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald; and a daughter, Laurel Bresnahan.
Neil Walker
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A. Neil Walker, 96, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Gibbon, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in Colorado Springs, where he had lived since 1987.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gibbon Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Flynn will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Walker was born on Dec. 10, 1901, in Gibbon to Charles L. and Etta (Morrison) Walker.
He grew up in the area and was a farmer and rancher.
Survivors include one son, James of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Elsie Sprague and Mary Kirstine; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy and Ray; and his former wife, Myrtle Nation.
He was preceded in death by his first wife.
James Clark
James K. Clark, 73, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at the VA Hospital in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to donor's choice.
Mr. Clark was born Aug. 20, 1924, to Thomas and Lida (Walker) Clark at Kennet, Mo. He received his education in Clarksburg, Tenn., graduating from Clarksburg High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 15, 1944, serving during World War II and was discharged May 21, 1946.
He married
Helen A. Jensen on Sept. 25, 1947, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple lived in Sturgis, S.D., and Grand Island before moving to Lake City, Fla., for a brief time.
They returned to Grand Island where he was employed at the VA Hospital for 30 years as a Lab Technician, retiring in 1979. He also worked for Standard Chemical Company where he sold cattle feed. After his retirement he ran pilot cars for mobile homes for the past several years.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1347 in Grand Island where he was past commander in 1963-64 and 65. He was active in VFW Bingo from 1950 to 1995.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Clark of Morrison, Colo., and Thomas "Ed" Clark of Papillion; two daughters, Patricia Stefanich of Castle Pine, Colo., and Nancy Nelson of Wichita, Kan.; and five grandchildren.
'Linda' Gordon
Mary "Linda" Gordon, 52, of 2821 Brentwood Blvd. in Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at University Medical Center at Omaha.
Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
Rose Leavitt
WOOD RIVER -- Rose I. Leavitt, 78, of the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. There will be visitation from 2 p.m. Thursday until service time at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Leavitt was born April 17, 1920, at Gordon to Dorsey and Florence (Baker) Parks. She grew up on the family farm near Gordon and attended Pleasant Hill School north of Gordon.
She married
William Gardner on July 18, 1936, at Gordon. They lived in South Dakota and the Gordon area.
Later she married
Walter Leavitt on Feb. 6, 1947, at Hot Springs, S.D. They lived at Pine Ridge, S.D., on the farm until 1950 when they moved into Gordon. She operated the Rose Leavitt Laundry out of her home. Mr. Leavitt died in November 1971.
She continued to run the laundry service until poor health forced her to stop. She moved to Bridgeport to be closer to her daughter. When her daughter moved to Grand Island in 1994 she entered the Wood River Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Leo) Evans of Grand Island and Betty (Mrs. Edward) Morris of Goodland, Kan.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven step daughters, Ann, Lydia, Martha, Ida, Margaret, Mabel and Agnes; and one step daughter.
