Niels Jensen
BROKEN BOW -- Niels E. Jensen, 80, of Broken Bow died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Henry Duerksen will officiate. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the hospital.
Mr. Jensen was born on Nov. 7, 1917, at Gandy to Otto I. and Myrtle (Drapper) Jensen. He attended rural school near Gandy.
He married
Esther Philpot on April 26, 1943. He farmed near Kearney and Cozad and worked for Paulsen's Inc. at Cozad and Broken Bow. He moved to Broken Bow in 1974. Following his retirement, he worked for Green Thumb planting trees.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald of North Platte and Robert John of Lexington; two daughters, Dorene Smith of North Platte and Leretta Smith of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
LeRoy McMillan
ALBION -- LeRoy Robert McMillan, 70, of Albion died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Pleasantview cemetery at Winside. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 252 of Winside.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. McMillan was born on May 26, 1928, at rural Winside to Ervin and Anna (Glandy) McMillan. He was educated at a rural Wayne County school.
He married
Mary Beyer on Nov. 5, 1950, in Madison County. They were later divorced.
Mr. McMillan farmed with his family from 1944 until enlisting in the U.S. Army on Jan. 25, 1951. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Occupation Medal (Japan). He was discharged on Jan. 12, 1953.
Following his discharge, he worked on a South Dakota ranch until moving to Nebraska in 1956. He worked for a seed company, a trucking company and the Norfolk Livestock Market. He then moved to Albion, where he worked at the Albion Livestock Market, Gustafsen Trucking and Lindsay Manufacturing for a short time. He then worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for 17 years before retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. He was also a member of American Legion Post 162 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 736 of Albion.
Survivors include two sons, Terry of Riverdale and Jim of Albion; one daughter, JoAnn (Mrs. Jon) Kraft of Norfolk; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin.
Della Peterson
SARGENT -- Della Peterson, 88, of Sargent died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Sargent District Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Marvin Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in Lone Tree cemetery at Weissert.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Peterson was born on Feb. 5, 1910, in Weissert to the Rev. John Wesley and Alta (Spencer) Pirnie. She grew up in Weissert and attended school at Dry Valley, graduating in 1929.
She furthered her education in Broken Bow, where she received a teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools northeast of Sargent.
She married
Andrew W. Peterson on Sept. 3, 1932, at the Loup City Baptist Church parsonage. They moved back to the Weissert area in 1950 and lived at Comstock. They moved to Sargent in 1981.
She was a member of the Weissert Church of God and the Dry Valley Aid.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Judy (Mrs. Robert) Conder of Mount Rose, Colo.; four sons, Robert of Lincoln, Ron of Spokane, Wash., Leroy of Trumbull and the Rev. Marvin of Eureka Springs, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence; and an infant sister, Buelah.
Lamont Schmadeke
ALBION -- Lamont N. Schmadeke, 82, of Albion died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Arthur Sebesta
ORD -- Arthur Sebesta, 78, of Ord died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Michael Elsberry II
ELY, Minn. -- Michael James Elsberry II, 18, died on Sept. 7, 1998, in a car accident in Ely, Minn.
Services were on Thursday at the Ely United Methodist Church. Dana Thompson officiated. Burial was in the Ely Cemetery. Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Elsberry was born on Jan. 1, 1980, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Michael James Elsberry and Mary Lynn Carothers.
He was attending Vermilion Community College, where he was studying to be a park ranger. He had lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, South Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota.
He had been fond of the outdoors since he was a young boy.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Becky Elsberry of Woonsocket, S.D., and John and Mary Lynn Unruh of Grand Island; his sister, Kara of Kearney; three brothers, Edward of Columbus, Miss., Thomas of Columbus, Ohio, and Eric of Woonsocket, S.D.; two stepbrothers, Nate and John Unruh; and two stepsisters, Amy Miller and Molly Unruh of Sioux Falls; his grandparents, Jack and Betty Carothers of Hilliard, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Beverly and Louella Elsberry.
Bernice King
ESTES PARK, Colo. -- Marion Bernice King, 95, of Estes Park, Colo., formerly of Albion, died Sept. 5, 1998, at Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Gilbert Karges will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. King was born on Aug. 5, 1903, near Royal to David Truman and Ruie May (Kendall) Carder.
Her early years were spent near Royal and Humphrey. Her family moved to Boone County in 1919. After graduating from St. Edward High School in 1921, she taught in rural schools.
She married
Elvin Ernest McCone on Dec. 26, 1937. They farmed south of Albion until his death in 1960.
She returned to elementary teaching and retired in June 1968.
She married
Irving King. They lived near Ord until Mr. King died in 1993. Mrs. King moved to Colorado be near her daughter, Doris, in an assisted care home.
Mrs. King was an active member of the United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, serving on various boards and committees of the Church and Women's Society and as a local and district officer of the society.
Her community activities included 4-H and extension club work and serving as county heart chairman and genealogist for one branch of her family from 1954 to 1990. She also traced family lines for each branch of her family and other relatives' families to a lesser extent.
She enjoyed reading newspapers, crocheting and reading the Bible.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; two daughters, Marian (Mrs. Frank) Rizzo of Grass Valley, Calif., and Doris Hunter of Estes Park, Colo.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Thelma Harkness, Eva Rise and Laura King, all of Ord; numerous step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Reynoldson of Grand Island and Helen Mills of Loveland, Colo.; and a brother, Neil Carder of St. Edward.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a stepson, Harold King; and three brothers, Carvel, Kendall and David.
