Frances Jenkins
Frances Jenkins, 86, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at her home.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Bob Spiehs
Robert L. "Bob" Spiehs, 74, of 317 N. Boggs died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Spiehs was born on Oct. 25, 1923, in Cairo to Ferdinand and Abeline (Wrage) Spiehs. He attended school at Abbott through the eighth grade. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during World War II in New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1946.
He married
Audrey Stephens on Jan. 26, 1951, in Grand Island. Mr. Spiehs worked for two years at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and then worked as a milk processor for Beatrice Foods in Grand Island from 1954 until retiring in 1983.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening and playing cards.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Platt-Duetsche, Eagles and Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roger Spiehs and Mike Spiehs, both of Lincoln; three grandchildren; his mother, of Grand Island; and one brother, Phil Spiehs of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Lloyd.
Rev. M.S. Andersen
NORTH LOUP -- The Rev. M.S. Andersen, 76, of North Loup died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ord Assembly of God Church. The Revs. Robert L. Nazarenus and Michael Christian II will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City cemetery with military rites by the Ord American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Rev. Andersen's chosen missions.
The Rev. Andersen was born on Feb. 18, 1922, at Obert to Hans Peter and Rhoda (Hansen) Andersen. He grew up at Obert and attended grade school there before the family moved to California. He graduated from Chaffey High School in California in 1940 and from Central Bible Institute at Springfield, Mo., in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from May 1946 until April 1947.
He married
Dorothy Mills on Oct. 17, 1947, at San Antonio. He began his ministry in the Assembly of God Church at Correctionville, Iowa, for three years and at Spirit Lake, Iowa, for two years. He evangelized for three years and was pastor for the Assembly of God Church at Blair for two years, at Colfax, Calif., for one year and back at Blair for five years.
He then served the church in Winner, S.D., for two years before returning to evangelistic work for four years. He spent the next two years at Burwell. The Rev. Andersen moved to Ord in 1975 to start the Assembly of God Church, which he literally built himself with the help of other church members.
He retired from the Ord church in 1985. He moved to Texas for two and a half years from 1988 to 1991 and had lived at North Loup for seven years.
Besides being a pastor, the Rev. Andersen painted and did construction work wherever he lived and also helped at local funeral homes. He worked for Ord Memorial Chapel for more than 15 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Andersen of Omaha and Glennette (Mrs. Michael) Christian of Brookfield, Mo.; one son, Wayne Andersen of Columbia Heights, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Wine and Francis Andersen, both of Chico, Calif.; and two brothers, Silas Andersen of Lucas, Iowa, and Chris Andersen of Livermore, Calif.
Roy Chaney
GILTNER -- Roy Chaney, 77, of Giltner died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, near Rawlins, Wyo., as a result of a traffic accident.
Services are pending at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a son, Edwin of Giltner; two daughters, Rosalie Chaney of Giltner and Beverly Chaney of Omaha; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois McCarty and Leta Bitterman, both of Tucson, Ariz.
William Drake
HALSEY -- William J. Drake, 66, of Halsey died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Leland Duryea
MERNA -- Leland Noble Duryea, 69, of Merna died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Duryea was born on March 20, 1929, in Merna to Noble and Dora (Riggs) Duryea. He grew up in the Merna area, where he attended the Wayside Country School and graduated from Merna High School in 1947.
He married
Arva Daily of Milburn on Jan. 6, 1948, in St. Paul's Methodist Church in Lincoln. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 6, 1998. He farmed and ranched with his father and later with his son, Lloyd, until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Merna. He enjoyed reading and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Lloyd Duryea of Merna; two daughters, Karen (Mrs. Dave) Evans of Sargent and Connie (Mrs. Keith) Mahnken of Grant; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Leland.
Leroy McMillan
ALBION -- Leroy R. McMillan, 70, of Albion died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Pleasantview cemetery at Winside. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 252 of Winside.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Della Peterson
SARGENT -- Della Peterson, 88, of Sargent died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Sargent District Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Marvin Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in Lone Tree cemetery at Weissert.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Daniel Schudel
NORTH LOUP -- Daniel Alden Schudel, 12, of North Loup died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital after a lengthy fight with cancer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church. The Rev. Murry Johnston will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Daniel was born on March 6, 1986, at Ord to Mike and Yolanda (Vavra) Schudel. He grew up in southern Mira Valley and was educated at home at the Double Tree Academy. He was a seventh-grader.
He was an avid naturalist, enjoyed hiking, studying birds, bird calling and training his horse, Blaze. He was an avid gardener specializing in sunflowers, tomatoes and squash.
He took trombone and violin lessons. He was active in 4-H, winning numerous awards in the showmanship of poultry and swine. He loved watching airplanes, building model airplanes, drawing airplanes, and he recently flew a glider airplane.
He was an artist and won honorable mention at Popcorn Days and honorable mention at an aviation art contest.
He attended Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church, where he also attended Sunday school. He was an honorary member of the 24th Medical Company (AA) of the National Guard in Lincoln and a cadet member of the Nebraska Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his parents, of North Loup; two brothers, John and Benjamin at home; one sister, Katharine at home; grandparents, Maynard and Margaret Schudel of North Loup and Jeanette Dunn of Arkansas; and two great-grandmothers, Minnie Stevens and Mary Vavra, both of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Vavra.
