Ralph Doud
Ralph F. Doud, 84, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the church. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Francis Hospice Program.
Ruth Fish
CLARKS -- Ruth Alice Fish, 89, of Clarks died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Fish was born on Oct. 20, 1908, on the home place near Clarks to John J. and Anna (Lumadue) Beck. She attended District 25 and Pleasant Hill schools in rural Merrick County. Due to the death of her mother, she assumed many household chores at an early age.
She married
Charles Fish on Feb. 14, 1932, at the home place. They farmed and also had teachers board at their home. Mrs. Fish spent her entire life on the home place near Clarks, except for the last few months, which were spent at Long-Term Care in Central City.
Mrs. Fish was an active member of Pierce Chapel Methodist Church, had been a 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the Always Busy Club. She especially enjoyed birthday parties and card games.
Mrs. Fish received the Pioneer Family Farm Award in 1967.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Her husband died in 1965. She also was preceded in death by seven brothers, David, Raymond, Walter, Theodore, Albert, Frank and Leslie Beck; and three sisters, Iva Branting, Zoe Beck and Lizzie Hansen.
Karry Lea Harders
WOOD RIVER -- Karry Lea Harders, 16, of Wood River died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, northeast of Wood River as a result of an automobile accident.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Dennis Reich will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Miss Harders was born on Jan. 23, 1982, in Grand Island to Jerry and Kathy (Juett) Harders. She grew up northeast of Wood River on the family farm and attended elementary school at District 16 north of Wood River. She was a junior at Wood River High School.
She helped her father with horses and with farm-related jobs. Her father referred to her as his right-hand "man."
She was president of the Pure Country 4-H Club and a member of the National Barrel Horse Association. She played volleyball, was a cheerleader and was on the honor roll at Wood River High School. She enjoyed team penning, barrel racing and riding colts.
Survivors include her parents, of Wood River; three sisters, Tina (Mrs. Shad) Fosket of Alliance, Shanon Gruener and Candy Harders at home; paternal grandparents, Rodney and Norma Jean Harders of Wood River; maternal grandparents, Lyle and Dorothy Juett of Grand Island; and a special friend, Bear Jennings of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Ethel Juett.
Mildred Kreis
STROMSBURG -- Mildred L. Kreis, 93, of Stromsburg died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at York General Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Dennis Murdock
ORD -- Dennis Murdock, 61, of Ord died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Leota Painter
BROKEN BOW -- Leota B. Painter, 93, of Broken Bow, formerly of Merna, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Merna. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Painter was born on June 11, 1905, at Merna to Arthur Leigh and Edith Louise (Kloven) Wood.
She married
Archie Garnet Painter in April 1946 at Johnstown, Colo. They moved to a farm west of Broken Bow in February 1947.
Mr. Painter died on July 16, 1971. Mrs. Painter then lived in Merna. She moved to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow in June 1996.
Survivors include two sisters, Lula Stoughton of Oregon and Viola Hlava of Lincoln.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle; and one brother, Bernard.
Orin Quandt
DAVENPORT -- Orin M. "Whitey" Quandt, 56, of Davenport died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Lincoln.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Davenport. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran cemetery at Kiowa.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport. Further visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and two hours before services at the church.
A memorial has been established.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; two daughters, Carrie (Mrs. Eric) Hogeland of Crete and Kendra Quandt of Lincoln; two grandchildren; three brothers, Walter of Irvine, Calif., Howard of O'Neill and Arthur of Grand Island; and one sister, Jackie (Mrs. Larry) Pollock of Grand Island.
Earle Baillie
LOUP CITY -- Earle C. Baillie, 79, of Loup City died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen cemetery in Loup City. The Rev. David R. Stipp will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
A memorial service followed by an open house will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the United Methodist Church in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Baillie raised purebred Hereford cattle. He was a member of the Sherman County Historical Society and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; four sons, Dr. E. Eugene Baillie of Anderson, S.C., Alexander A. Baillie of Omaha, Carl C. Baillie of Kula, Hawaii, and Jonathan J. Baillie of Holstein, Iowa; two daughters, Mary M. Byington of Sidney, Australia, and Clara C. (Mrs. Jeff) Stobbe of Rockville; 10 grandchildren; four foster grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Baillie of Salem, Ore.; and one sister, Alice Judd of Salem, Ore.
Louise Hatfield
ST. PAUL -- Louise V. Hatfield, 78, of St. Paul died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Laura Bartels will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Hatfield was born on Aug. 8, 1920, in St. Paul to William and Marie (Dvoracek) Melson. She attended St. Paul Public Schools and graduated in 1938. She then attended the former St. Paul Business College.
She was a secretary at the Howard County Courthouse from 1940 to 1941.
She married
Bob Hatfield on June 11, 1941, in Baltimore. The couple worked for the Social Security board until October 1942. They then returned to St. Paul, where she resumed her work at the courthouse. They lived in Columbus from 1946 to 1958. She worked for the Loup River Public Power District through 1950.
The couple moved to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1958 and later to Rapid City, S.D. They also lived in McLean, Va., and Lenexa, Kan. They retired to Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 1983 and moved back to St. Paul in 1985.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She also served on the St. Paul Library board.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Jane (Mrs. Tony) Chase of Fort Wayne, Texas; one son, Dan of Leander, Texas; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Quick and James Melson; and one sister, Evelyn Rice.
