'Fred' Smith
MESA, Ariz. -- William "Fred" Fredrick Smith, 73, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Polk, died Sept. 11, 1998.
Services were on Sept. 14 at Mountain View Memorial Chapel in Mesa. The Rev. Joseph Shonk officiated. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Garden in Mesa.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.
Mr. Smith was born on Aug. 31, 1925, in Arborville to Charles and Ella (Bowers) Smith. He graduated from Polk High School in 1943.
He married
Ruth Arlene (McConaughey) Nelson on March 17, 1947. He was a retired railroad station agent.
He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert; two stepsons, Randall and Ted McConaughey; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Frances Barrett
Frances R. Barrett, 95, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Nebraska Library for the Blind.
Mrs. Barrett was born on Aug. 21, 1903, at Wakefield to Herman and Meta (Utemark) Wriedt. She grew up in northeast Nebraska and graduated from Emerson High School. She attended Wayne State College, Columbia University in New York and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. She earned her bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Nebraska.
She married
William Avon Barrett on Nov. 28, 1929, in Emerson. She began teaching in rural schools near Emerson, Wood Lake and Crofton. Later she taught at Mapleton, Iowa, and in Grand Island for 17 years at Broadwell Court, Jefferson and Lincoln schools. Mr. Barrett died on May 30, 1960.
Mrs. Barrett traveled extensively during her retirement years. She worked with the American Red Cross, 4-H, Girl Scouts, YMCA, music pupils and senior citizen organizations.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, St. Pauls Rachel Circle and the church's Sewing Circle. She was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for many years. She belonged to the Grand Island Retired Teachers Association and continued to hold memberships in the Nebraska State Education and National Teachers Associations.
Her hobbies included music, knitting, crocheting and sewing.
Survivors include one son, Dr. William A. Barrett of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Wanda Larson of Grand Island; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ursula Klatt of Grand Island.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Anna Pollock
Anna I. Pollock, 82, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Robert Harms and Martin Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends between 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran School Library or the donor's choice.
Survivors include her husband, Earl; one son, Elmer of Grand Island; three daughters, Earlene Stratman of Grand Island, Joy Becker of Rockville and Ruth Priebe of Omaha; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alma Schultz of Crystal Lake, Ill.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Carl, William, Walter, Fred, Edward and George; and three sisters, Matilda Quandt, Emma Wiemer and Clara Klein.
'Duke' Allington
FULLERTON -- Richard "Duke" Allington, 63, of Fullerton died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Revs. Mary McQueen and Roy Cupples will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton cemetery with military rites.
Mr. Allington was born on Oct. 5, 1934, at Palmer to Glenn and Bessie (Francis) Allington. He attended District 16 School and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
He married
Ida Blumm on June 23, 1960, at Fullerton. They farmed until 1982. He started working for Nance County in 1953 and continued working for the county as the maintainer operator until his death.
He enjoyed camping, bowling and all sports and umpired baseball games.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 151, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Card Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Diane Allington of Fullerton; and one brother, Bill Allington of Crofton.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Earle Baillie
LOUP CITY -- Earle C. Baillie, 79, of Loup City died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen cemetery in Loup City. The Rev. David R. Stipp will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
A memorial service followed by an open house will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the United Methodist Church in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Baillie was born on Oct. 12, 1918, on a farm northwest of Loup City to Alfred and Gotheldena (Jensen) Baillie. He attended Sherman County rural schools and then farmed the home place northwest of Loup City.
He married
Catherine T. Miska on May 24, 1940, at Loup City. The couple first lived on the family farm and moved in 1946 to Loup City, where he continued to ranch and was district manager for Curtis Publishing Co. The couple moved to a farm near Loup City in 1964, and he worked as a salesman and continued to raise purebred heifer cattle.
The couple retired in 1992 and moved back into Loup City. He enjoyed marksmanship and collecting guns and coins. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served as a session member of the church for a number of years.
He was a member of the Sherman County Medical Society and the National Rifle Association. He had been a member of the Farm Bureau since 1979, was a former member and president of the Loup City Saddle Club and had been active in the American Red Cross.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Dr. E. Eugene Baillie of Anderson, S.C., Alexander A. Baillie of Omaha, Carl Baillie of Kula, Hawaii, and Jonathan J. Baillie of Holstein, Iowa; two daughters, Mary Byington of Sidney, Australia, and Clara C. (Mrs. Jeff) Stobbe of Rockville; 10 grandchildren; four foster grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Baillie of Salem, Ore.; and one sister, Alice Judd of Salem, Ore.
Alma Brandt
WOOD RIVER -- Alma A. Brandt, 93, of Wood River died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Box Elder cemetery in Mason City. The Rev. Jim Ferguson will officiate.
Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.
Miss Brandt was born on Dec. 28, 1904, in a sod house in the Cumro community in Custer County to Jochim and Anna (Felske) Brandt.
She moved to Grand Island in 1946 and worked at St. Francis Hospital for 16 years. She then worked at the Yancey Hotel for several years and later did baby-sitting and helped raise the children of the Christy Page Roy family for 10 years.
Survivors include one sister, Margaretha McCullough of Broken Bow; and special friends, Christy Page Roy and her three children, Fred Page, Sherry (Mrs. Steve) Wirtz and Dana Roy.
She was preceded in death by an infant twin brother and sister; and six other brothers, Walter, Henry, David, John, Herman and Lester.
Louise Hatfield
ST. PAUL -- Louise V. Hatfield, 78, of St. Paul died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Laura Bartels will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
