FREMONT -- Bessie Synowski of Fremont, formerly of St. Paul, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.
Services are pending with Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
'Bob' Umbenhower
HASTINGS -- Robert "Bob" Lester Umbenhower, 70, of Hastings died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at Villa Grace in Hastings.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Bill Liddell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Umbenhower was born on April 8, 1928, at Phillips to Lester and Grace E. (Lansden) Umbenhower. He graduated from Phillips High School in 1946.
He married
Thelma M. Andrews on May 22, 1948. He was a foreman for the construction of the Veterans Affairs hospital and Shady Bend Road in Grand Island. He then worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He worked for Culligan Soft Water in Grand Island as a delivery man for 23 years. He worked as a machinist for Dana Corp. in Hastings for 11 years and retired from there.
He was a golden eagle at the Eagles Club in Grand Island for nine years and served as manager. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Hastings for one year.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Melva Sandquist of Grand Island; two foster daughters; one son, Earl Umbenhower of Ayr; five foster sons; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Naomi Andrew of Casa Grande, Ariz., Betty Vlasek of Columbus and Cheryl Tweedy of Albuquerque, N.M.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
'Dub' McCord
SEABROOK, Texas -- H.W. "Dub" McCord, 74, of Seabrook, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in Seabrook.
Services were on Wednesday at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Seabrook. Burial was in Forest Park East cemetery in Seabrook.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
He was a member of American Legion Post 490.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Janice McCord; two daughters, Tana L. Allen and Sharon L. (Mrs. Richard) Holley; three sons, William C. McCord, Kevin H. McCord and Kary J. McCord; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Harriet Watson of Canby, Ore.; and one brother, Oliver McCord of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.
Maxine Stapelman
Elizabeth, Colo. -- Maxine Stapelman, 82, of Elizabeth, Colo., formerly of Miller, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at Elizabeth.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. David Harder will officiate. Burial will be in the Cliff Cemetery, west of Merna.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Stapelman was born on April 10, 1916, at Callaway to Howard and Nannie (Hutt) Kaupp. She attended country schools.
She married
Donald Stapelman on Feb. 6, 1935, at Roseburg, Ore. They lived in Miller, and she worked at Baldwin Manufacturing in Kearney. Mr. Stapelman died on Sept. 28, 1996. At the time of her death, Mrs. Stapelman had been living with her granddaughter, Debbie Lambert, in Elizabeth.
Survivors include one sister, Kathryn Chase of Rapid City, S.D.; three granddaughters and several great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Dennis in 1992; and an infant daughter, Coletta.
Mildred Larson
Mildred M. Larson, 87, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jocelyn Tupper officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Madison Crown Hill cemetery in Madison.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Larson was born on Jan. 19, 1911, at Madison to August and Maude (Wyatt) Wolfgram. She grew up and was educated in the Madison area and graduated from Madison High School.
She was married
to Clifford K. Larson on Oct. 7, 1936, at Madison. They lived in Missouri, Kentucky and Texas before moving to Grand Island in 1948.
She was a homemaker and a mother.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, church circles and card clubs.
Survivors include two sons, Dick Larson of Omaha and Gerry Larson of Lincoln; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and two sisters.
Laurene Callaway
BROKEN BOW -- Laurene A. Callaway, 81, of Broken Bow died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. J. Green will officiate. Burial will be in the Ainsworth Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Callaway was born on Dec. 18, 1916, at Correctionville, Iowa, to Charles and Mamie (Wells) Scott. She grew up in Correctionville.
She married
Donald Frazier on Sept. 30, 1936, and moved to Glendale, Calif. She moved back to Correctionville in 1938. She spent the war years in Sioux City, Iowa, working as a machinist for Albertson Tool Co.
She married
Homer Babbitt on Dec. 18, 1942. They moved from Sioux City to Norfolk in 1945 and to Ainsworth in 1951. Mr. Babbitt died in 1959.
She married
Connie Callaway on Aug. 19, 1960. Mr. Callaway died in May 1982, and Mrs. Callaway spent many winters in Georgia with her daughter, Marilyn, and in Arizona with her son, Gary. She also spent much time at the ranch in Elsmere with her daughter, Carolyn.
She moved to Custer Heights in Broken Bow on June 15, 1993.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Does Drove 54 and Women's Bowling Association. She also was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Babbitt of Broken Bow and Gary Babbitt of Sutherlin, Ore.; three daughters, Marilyn Shehee of Ashburn, Ga., Scottie Caldwell of Norcross, Ga., and Nancy Drent of Pickrell; five stepchildren; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Opal Siefke and Maye Small, both of Washta, Iowa.
Besides two of her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Homer "Skip"; one daughter, Carolyn; one grandson; three brothers; and one sister.
Dwight Johnson
BURWELL -- Dwight E. Johnson, 83, of Burwell died Monday, June 8, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Ray Avidano officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
