James Davis
Ravenna -- James A. Davis, 63, of Ravenna died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Martin Egging will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Davis was born on June 6, 1935, at Wood River to Charles and Ruth (Mitchell) Davis. He graduated from Wood River High School in 1952. He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 14, 1955, and served during the Korean War. He was discharged on Nov. 28, 1956.
He married
Joan McCumber on April 7, 1959. They lived and farmed in Wood River before moving to Omaha, where he was a meat cutter. He later lived in Shelton, where he was a self-employed trucker, and then moved to Ravenna, where he owned and operated Stockman Lounge. He was also a carpenter at Geer Melkus and the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna and was an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom of Houston and Doug of Grand Island; a daughter, Kathy (Mrs. Bill) Muchow of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; his mother, of Wood River; two brothers, Jack of Wood River and Bill of Phoenix; and seven sisters, Audrey McEvoy of Hermingston, Ore., Loretta Kuttler of Aurora, Colo., Jean Mahurin of Kansas City, Mo., Dorothy Bimoint of Portland, Ore., Betty Stutzman of Bellevue, Ann Fritch of Santa Maria, Calif., and Kay McGowan of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Chuck; his father; and a sister, Pat.
Margaret Nicholas
PALMER -- Margaret Nicholas, 42, of Palmer died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services are pending at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.
Larry Seufert
LINCOLN -- Larry J. Seufert, 61, of Lincoln died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in El Paso, Texas.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the First Mennonite Church in Lincoln. Steve Ratzlaff will officiate. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Seufert was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; one daughter, Cheryl (Mrs. George) Harwood of Lincoln; two grandchildren; his mother, Pearl Seufert of Lincoln; and one sister, Jan Alexander of Chapman.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Chris.
Barbara Ens
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -- Barbara Ens of Baldwin City, Kan., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Services are pending with Anson Funeral Home in Genoa.
David John
CAIRO, N.Y. -- David V. John, 70, of Cairo, N.Y., formerly of Loup City, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Revs. Reginald A. Urban and James Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. John was born on Nov. 9, 1927, in Loup City to Vincent and Elizabeth (Badura) John. He attended St. Josaphat's Parochial School and graduated from Loup City High School.
He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Denver and in 1952 was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest serving in the Grand Island Diocese. He served parishes in St. Libory, Prairie Center, Kearney, Anselmo and Rushville.
He married
Virginia M. Borchers on Dec. 31, 1968, in Riverside, Calif. The couple lived in Pomona, Calif. He became a counselor in the Baldwin Park, Calif., School District in 1968 and later becoming a school principal. He retired in 1982.
The couple moved to Cairo, N.Y., in November 1997.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Cairo, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife; five sons, Rodney Burnett and Danny Burnett, both of Anselmo, David John of Houston, James John of Cairo, N.Y., and Christopher John of Apple Valley, Calif.; three daughters, Linda (Mrs. Ray) Bang of Cairo, N.Y., Teresa (Mrs. John) Kolkebeck of Sandy, Utah, and Kathy (Mrs. Lyle) LaMothe of Pasadena, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty (Mrs. Don) Woody of Lincoln and Ellen (Mrs. Samuel) Johnson of Craig, Colo.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James.
Michael Johnson
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Michael L. Johnson, 39, of Spokane, Wash., died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, as a result of injuries received in a stabbing.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Mr. Johnson will be cremated following the service.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the homeless and needy.
Mr. Johnson was born on Nov. 6, 1958, to LeRoy and Nancy (Burns) Johnson. He was educated in Scottsbluff, Bayard, Dalton and Sidney. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from 1975 to 1977 at Fort Riley, Kan.
He married
Debra Cordell in 1981 at Alliance. He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for seven years before moving to Florida and then to Spokane, where he worked as a carpenter/contractor.
He enjoyed boxing and had received several trophies. He also liked baseball and was a Nebraska football fan. He enjoyed crafts and was an avid helper of the homeless and needy.
Survivors include his mother, Nancy Surber of Alda; two sons, Levi of Alliance and Cory of Spokane, Wash.; one daughter, Renee Johnson of Alliance; two sisters, Brenda Moser of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Debra Welton of Luverne, Minn.; and his grandmother, Fern Burns of Gering.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Judy Kemper
Judy A. Kemper, 57, of Grand Island, formerly of Aurora, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Karl Larson will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the ARC of Hamilton and Merrick Counties.
She was born on March 11, 1941, at Grand Island to Carleton and Miriam (Agelin) Kemper. She lived in the family home until 1975, when she moved to Grand Island and became a client of Mid-Nebraska Individual Services.
She was a member of the Aurora Evangelical Covenant Church and attended Trinity Lutheran Church and Abundant Life Christian Center while living in Grand Island.
Survivors include a sister, Edith (Mrs. Lee) Scott of Aurora.
