Madeline Curnyn
GREELEY -- Madeline Curnyn, 93, of Greeley died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at the Greeley Care Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Greeley.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Curnyn was born on Oct. 28, 1904, at Greeley to William and Margaret (Kelly) Moran. She attended Sacred Heart School at Greeley. She taught school at Greeley and Grant.
She married
Owen Curnyn on June 8, 1936. The couple lived and farmed southwest of Greeley. They retired in 1974 and moved to Greeley. Mr. Curnyn died on Aug. 31, 1976.
Mrs. Curnyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a past member of the Altar Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Smith of Papillion; six grandchildren; a brother, Dick Moran of Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Margaret Cannon of Greeley.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Thomas, John, James and Steven; and three sisters, Kathleen, Alice and Claire.
Joseph Wirges
PETERSBURG -- Joseph August Wirges Jr., 72, of Petersburg died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. The Rev. Jeff Zyla will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 334 of Petersburg.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Visitation will resume after 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church with a wake services at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mr. Wirges was born on Jan. 26, 1926, on the family farm west of Petersburg to Joseph A. Sr. and Anna (Salber) Wirges. He was educated at Boone County District 18 School west of Petersburg and St. John's Parochial School. He attended classes at Norfolk Technical School.
He entered the U.S. Army on March 3, 1945. He served as a corporal in the Pacific Islands and Germany, where he re-enlisted. He was discharged on Oct. 31, 1946.
He married
Alleida Mae Peterson on June 26, 1951. They lived in Sterling, Colo., where he worked at a grocery and service station. They returned to Petersburg in 1953. Mr. Wirges farmed, operated a poultry processing plant, did custom baling and silage chopping for area farmers.
He retired in 1997. He had lived at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward since July.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Rae Valley Heritage Association and American Legion Post 334 of Petersburg.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Joseph III and Michael, both of Norfolk, Thomas and Phillip, both of Holyoke, Colo., and Dean of Julesburg, Colo.; two daughters, Charlotte (Mrs. Jay) Becker of Holdrege and Veronica (Mrs. Dale) Olnes of Petersburg; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, John and Bernard, both of Petersburg; and four sisters, Marcella (Mrs. Elder) Friese of Longmont, Colo., Leona Brown of Lincoln and Alvina Rueth and Frances (Mrs. Clem) Luettel, both of Petersburg.
He was preceded in death by infant children, Joseph and Mary; a granddaughter; and a sister, Helen Hood.
Viola Moss
Viola Erna Moss, 89, of 1010 N. Howard died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Mrs. Moss was born Aug. 30, 1908, north of Shelton to Fred and Wilhemine (Eickhoff) Kruse. She attended District 60 School north of Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1926. She then attended and graduated from Kearney State Teachers College.
She taught school for 35 years at numerous schools in Hall, Buffalo and Scottsbluff counties. She taught the eighth grade at Shelton Public Schools and was an elementary principal at Buffalo Elementary school in North Platte for seven years. She later taught in the Grand Island Public Schools until her retirement in 1973.
She married
Henry F. Moss, a farmer from Shelton, on June 4, 1933, in Grand Island. They lived on various farms in Hall and Buffalo Counties until 1963, when they moved to Grand Island.
During World War II she was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and was involved with the Sunday School, the church council, various committees, and the Naomi Circle. She was a former member of the retired teachers association, the Women's Club, the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, the Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society and AARP.
Survivors include one son, Donald of Grand Island; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Erna (Mrs. Orville) Hulme of Cairo.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990 and a sister, Lydia Tyner.
Herbert Staab
PLEASANTON -- Herbert K. Staab, 71, of Pleasanton died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Pleasanton. The Rev. Dean Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Pleasanton Emergency Unit.
Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Staab was born Nov. 26, 1926, in Ansley to Artie and Alda (Swacett) Staab. He attended grade school at the Happy Hollow School and graduated from Ansley High School.
He served for 26 years in the U.S. Navy. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the service he drove a truck and then worked for Kelly Electric until retiring in 1992.
He married
Bonnie Lammers Slocumb in 1976.
He was a member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mike Staab of Fort Collins, Colo.; one stepson, Mark Slocumb of Pleasanton; four grandchildren; six brothers, Walter of Ansley, Bob of Broken Bow, Glen of Grand Island, Harvey of Denver, Colo., Orie of Gretna and Norman of Cedar Bluffs; and one sister, Margarite Bristol of Ansley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Marvin Doremus
APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- Marvin R. Doremus, 72, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Apfel Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be in the Shelton Cemetery.

Mr. Doremus was born Nov. 13, 1925, at Shelton to Chester and Pearl (Marks) Doremus. He grew up in Nebraska and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to Michigan after the war and lived there until he moved to Arizona 11 years ago. Mr. Doremus was a retired construction supervisor and was a well-known local musician. He had been a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Doremus; five sons, Lon of Bartlett, Ill., Jerry of Fort Wayne, Ind., Randy of Adrian, Mich., Marvin Jr. of Montgomery, Ill. and Todd of Apache Junction, Ariz; two daughters, Renee Gittus of Tecumseh, Mich. and Kim Galindo of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Arlene Fraim of Sturgis, Mich.; two brothers, Gerald of Gering and Gaylord of Columbus; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, and a sister, June Powell.
Helen Larson
GREELEY, Colo. -- Helen R. Larson, 88, of Greeley, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died July 31, 1998, at Centennial Health Care Center in Greeley.
Survivors include her husband, James L. Larson of Fort Morgan, Colo.
Sr. JoAnn McMaster
COVINGTON, Ky. -- Sister Jo Ann McMaster, OP, Director of the Office of Pastoral Planning for the Diocese of Covington, Ky., formerly of Spalding, died Aug. 8, 1998, after an eight-year struggle with cancer.

Sister Jo Ann was a Dominican of St. Catharine, Ky., for 41 years and a native of Spalding. She taught in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Nebraska. She had taught at St. Mary's High School in Omaha and Sacred heart in Greeley. From 1971 to 1975 she gaught at Central Catholic High School in Grand Island.
In 1978 she began a position as the Director of Finance for the Dominicans of St. Catharine, Ky. She began socially responsible principles of investments and initiated earth-friendly farming practices on St. Catharine Farm.
From 1987 to 1994, Sister Jo Ann served as business Manager/Director of Student Activities at Aquinas Institute of theology in St. Louis.
Survivors include one sister, Helen Brandl.
