Raymond Riha
DAVID CITY - Raymond J. Riha, 62, of David City died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City with the Rev. Adrian Herbek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday at Knott Funeral Home in David City and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church. The rosary will be at 7:30 on Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested in care of the family.
Mr. Riha was born July, 12, 1935, at David City to Raymond and Lucille (Bouc) Riha.
He graduated from Marietta High School in 1954.
He married
Joan Samek on Sept. 26, 1959, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Abie. They lived in the David City area all their married
life.
He worked as a maintenance supervisor for St. Mary's Church and School from 1966 to 1978.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Church.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Chris Riha of Grand Island; two daughters, Barb (Mrs. Chuck) Brandenburgh of Overland Park, Kan., and Jeanne Riha of Lincoln; three brothers, Dennis, Gary and John, all of David City; one sister, Lucille "Susie" (Mrs. Ron) Behrens of Lincoln; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother Leo.
Mary Voskamp
CEDAR RAPIDS - Mary Harriet (Rieken) Voskamp, 89, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion with the Rev. Vernon Knight officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Levander Funeral Home.
Mrs. Voskamp was born on May 15, 1908, at Cedar Rapids to Henry and Carrie (Hestikind) Rieken. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
She received her elementary education at a country school near Cedar Rapids and attended Cedar Rapids High School.
She married
John Voskamp on Aug. 4, 1926, in Cedar Rapids. The couple farmed southwest of Cedar Rapids and also west of Albion. In the 1930s, they moved to Iowa where they continued to farm. During World War II, she worked at the Denver Ammunition Depot. She later worked for Montgomery Wards.
They returned to Boone County in 1956 where they ran the Akron Store for 21 years. In 1977 the couple moved to Albion where they were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Her husband died on May 11, 1987. She continued to live at home until entering the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in January 1992.
She is survived by one son, David of Bailey, Colo.; two sisters, Anna Edwards of Columbus and Rieka Vorthmann of Treynor, Iowa; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Henry; and one sister Carrie.
'Wally' Huffman
SAN DIEGO, Calif., - Wallace "Wally" Huffman, 86, of San Diego, Calif, formerly of Aurora, died Friday, May 8, 1998, in Hemet, Calif.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Aurora Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Aurora Lodge #68, AF and AM. There will be no visitation. The Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Huffman was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Kansas to Wiley and May Huffman. He grew up in Aurora.
He married
Dorothy Swanson and they moved to San Diego, Calif., where he was employed by United Parcel Service. She preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1994.
He was a member of the San Diego Trinity United Methodist Church, and he belonged to the Mission Bay Masonic Lodge #771.
Survivors include two sisters, Jane Stehle of Adelanto, Calif. and Opal Wofford of Kennewick, Md.
Nels Andersen
Nels Andersen, 76, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Keith Menter will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia with military rites by the Scotia American Legion.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Andersen was born on Aug. 5, 1922, at Hurley, S.D., to Chris and Bertha (Malzer) Andersen. He grew up and attended schools in Turner County, S.D.
He entered the U.S. Army during World War II on Jan. 28, 1943, and served until Nov. 14, 1945. Following the service, he returned to Marion, S.D.
He married
Wilda Mae Orthman on Aug. 17, 1946, at Salem, S.D. He enjoyed working with and training thoroughbred race horses in Nebraska and Illinois. He also worked at service stations in Merrian and Sioux Falls, S.D. He then worked for Northside Motors in Grand Island until retiring on June 1, 1988. Mrs. Andersen died on Jan. 10, 1997.
Survivors include two sisters, Viola Myott and Lurline Overgard, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Andersen.
Helen Larsen
Helen D. Larsen, 91, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Mrs. Larsen was cremated. There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or Stuhr Museum.
Mrs. Larsen was born on June 15, 1907, at Omaha to J. Theo and Wilhelmina (Lucht) Brammann. She grew up and was educated at Omaha and graduated from Central High School in Omaha. She furthered her education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she was affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She married
Paul C. Larsen on Oct. 14, 1927, at Omaha. The couple lived in Bennington, Blair and St. Paul. They moved to Grand Island in 1955.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter CK of the PEO Sisterhood, Central Nebraska Shrine Club Auxiliary and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Maren (Mrs. Robert) Palmer of Temple, Texas; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wallace Brammann of Tucson, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
'Dick' Gustafson
HORDVILLE -- Richard Leonard "Dick" Gustafson, 72, of Hordville died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Community Care in Central City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Hordville. The Rev. Darryl Keeney will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Mr. Gustafson was born on May 4, 1926, in Polk to Oscar and Beulah (Stevens) Gustafson. He attended a rural Hamilton County school and graduated from Polk High School in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines
He married
Deloris F. Steinke on Nov. 9, 1955, in Central City. They lived in Central City for two years and moved to the family farm near Hordville in the late 1950s. His son joined him in the farming operation. They moved into Hordville to live in 1979, but Mr. Gustafson continued farming with his son as long as his health allowed.
Mr. Gustafson enjoyed fishing, gun collecting and the outdoors. He was a member of the Hordville Lions Club and the American Legion Post in Polk.
Survivors include one son, Tom of Hordville; one daughter, Kathy (Mrs. Mike) Ritta of Chapman; and eight grandchildren.
His wife died in 1994. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Roger Gustafson.
