'Larry' Hansen
LOUP CITY -- Lawrence "Larry" H. Hansen, 87, of Loup City died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. The Rev. Carl Jantz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City with military rites by American Legion Post 48 of Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the regular Baptist Church in Loup City or the donor's choice.
Mr. Hansen was born on Oct. 13, 1910, on a farm in Sherman County to Nickalous and Pauline (Jung) Hansen. He attended District 13 School and graduated from Loup City High School and the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
He married
Hazel M. Portis on Dec. 26, 1940, in Loup City. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II. He was a high school teacher and then became a rural mail carrier.
He then became Sherman County superintendent of schools and, upon retirement, became a pilot and operated the Loup City Airport. He owned several planes in turn but was forced to give up his pilot's license due to ill health. For the next few years, he was a court reporter and water table inspector for Sherman County.
He was a past president of the Loup City Chamber of Commerce, past commander of Loup City American Legion Post 48 and was involved in many other community activities.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Jean Burr of Grand Island; and one brother, Chris Hansen of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and four sisters.
Almedia Leibert
SARGENT -- Almedia Leibert, 82, of Sargent died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent. The Rev. Walter Collins will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Leibert was born on May 19, 1916, in Arcadia to Enoch and Bertha (Gibson) White. She attended school in Arcadia.
She married
Howard Leibert on March 16, 1932, at St. Paul. They lived one mile north of Sargent, where they farmed. They bought a home in Sargent in 1958. She worked at the Sargent Nursing Home for 17 years as the dietary supervisor.
Survivors include a son, Darrell "Dick" Leibert of Sargent; a daughter, Conni Bomberger of Sargent; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Genevive Dorsey of Arcadia.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Donna; four brothers and three sisters.
Eleanor Penny
SARGENT -- Eleanor Penny, 102, of Sargent died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Goli Medical Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Walt Collins will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the medical center.
Mrs. Penny was born on Nov. 28, 1895, in Loup County to John and Eleanor (Parkin) Cail. She attended rural schools in Loup County and graduated from Taylor High School in 1913. After graduation, she taught a few years in country school in rural Loup County. She then was a clerk at the Cash Store in Taylor.
She married
Marc A. Penny on March 20, 1920, at Taylor. They lived on a ranch west of Taylor. Her husband died in 1970. She continued to live on the ranch until she moved to the Sargent Nursing Center in 1988. She went to the Sargent Hospital long-term care in 1995.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Cail; five half brothers, Joe, Bill, Robert, Jim and John Parkin; and one sister, Hannah Mansfield.
Margaret Treon
CRETE -- Margaret E. Treon, 106, of Crete, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. The Rev. David McCreary will officiate. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Frances Flynn
HASTINGS -- Frances M. Flynn, 85, of Villa Grace in Hastings died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Villa Grace.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Harold Stromer will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial will be established.
Mrs. Flynn was born on May 30, 1913, at Hastings to John M. and Bertha (Rothfuss) Cornelius.
She married
Joseph F. Flynn on May 6, 1944. He died in 1965. She had worked in various restaurants, including Thiel's Cafe.
She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.
Survivors include one son, Gary of Grand Island; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Goldenstein of Hastings, Clara Eppley of Ericson and Darlene Lowell of Alexandria, Va.; and one brother, Robert Cornelius of Cozad.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Albert.
Veda McBride
SARGENT -- Veda Maxine McBride, 76, of Sargent died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. A private family burial will be later.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. McBride was born on June 21, 1922, in Meadow Grove to Fred and Beulah (Fox) Battshaw. She attended school through the eighth grade in Valley County.
She married
Vernon C. McBride, and they were later divorced. She lived in Albion for a time and enjoyed helping people. She often took in elderly people who were in need of a home. She had lived in Nebraska for many years, including the past few years in Sargent. She had been living in the Sargent Nursing Home for the last 18 months.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include three sons, Marvin McBride of Sargent, Terry McBride of Brewster and Bob McBride of Elkton, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie (Mrs. Gary) Fowler of Valentine.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Vesta Faye; three brothers and one sister.
Bernice Ruby
GIBBON -- Bernice C. Ruby, 97, of Gibbon died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Barbara Spangler will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Emergency Unit Fund.
Mrs. Ruby was born on March 24, 1901, in Lowell to Eddie E. and Harriet A. (Cotton) Carpenter. She grew up and was educated in Lowell. She worked for her father at the Carpenter General Store in Lowell until her marriage.
She married
George W. Ruby in October 1922. They lived in Grand Island and later Mullen before moving back to Lowell in 1929. They owned and operated a gasoline delivery service there. Mr. Ruby died in 1958, and Mrs. Ruby moved to Gibbon in 1977.
Survivors include one son, Eldon of Gibbon; two daughters, Anita Smith of Gibbon and Shirley Weed of Bella Vista, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, three brothers and one sister.
