Daryl Schweiger
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Daryl L. "Skip" Schweiger, 66, of Des Moines, Iowa, died of cancer Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Kavanaugh House in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Services will be at noon Friday at Southtown Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Des Moines.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with the family to receive friends during that time.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice Kavanaugh House.
Mr. Schweiger was born at Grand Island. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa, from Grand Island in 1960. He was a conductor for the Rock Island Railroad. He retired in 1987.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of Elks Lodge 98, Eagles, United Transportation Union and Johnston Little League.
Survivors include his wife, Bette; two daughters, Karen Thompson of Norwalk, Iowa, and Linda McCullough of Des Moines; one son, Vincent Schweiger of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and one brother, George Schweiger of Bella Vista, Ark.
Nels Andersen
Nels Andersen, 76, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Keith Menter will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
'Larry' Hansen
LOUP CITY -- Lawrence "Larry" H. Hansen, 87, of Loup City died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. The Rev. Carl Jantz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City with military rites by American Legion Post 48 of Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the regular Baptist Church in Loup City or the donor's choice.
Almedia Leibert
SARGENT -- Almedia Leibert, 82, of Sargent died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent. The Rev. Walter Collins will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Eleanor Penny
SARGENT -- Eleanor Penny, 102, of Sargent died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Goli Medical Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Greg Volzke will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the medical center.
George Stromp
SPALDING -- George A. Stromp, 96, of Spalding died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Wednesday at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.
Mr. Stromp was born on Sept. 13, 1902, in a sod house on the Stromp homestead northwest of Spalding in Wheeler County to Andrew and Elizabeth (Glesinger) Stromp. He attended country District 24 School. He farmed with his father and barbered in Ericson.
He married
Agnes Ballweg on Feb. 18, 1930, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Stromps lived on the Northstar Farm northeast of Spalding.
The Stromps moved in 1940 to Cedar Valley west of Spalding, where they ranched and raised their family. They moved into Spalding in 1984, but Mr. Stromp continued to help manage the cattle on the ranch.
He was a member of St. Michael's Men's Club, the fair board, SCS board and FHA board. He was a 4-H leader.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Rosemary Shirley of Omaha; three sons, Gerald of Omaha and James and Richard, both of Spalding; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Paul; one granddaughter, three brothers and four sisters.
Mathieu Butters
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Mathieu Earl Butters, 86, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Sept. 16, 1998, at his home.
Family services will be at a later date at Mount Olivet cemetery in Denver.
Mr. Butters was born on Sept. 8, 1912, on the family homestead near Greeley, Colo. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on projects near Sargent, Grand Island, Loup City, Ord and St. Paul until his retirement in 1969.
Survivors include three sons, Tom of Kearney, Bill of Alta Vista, Va., and Ron of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Swanson of Arvada, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, Mary Ellen and Phyllis Curtis; two sons, three grandsons and two brothers.
Margaret Westover
Margaret C. Westover, 95, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Dana Berryman
SCOTIA -- Dana Berryman, 82, of Scotia died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Scotia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia with military rites.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with Masonic rites at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton. Further visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday prior to services.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia Rescue Unit or Scotia United Methodist Church.
Mr. Berryman was born on May 24, 1916, in Fullerton to James D. and Mae (Baldridge) Berryman. He grew up in Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1933. He attended the St. Paul Business College and was deputy county clerk in Fullerton for several years.
He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and served as a communication technician with the 323rd Bomb Group. He served as a technical sergeant through the Algeria-French Morocco, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaign.
Following his discharge on Oct. 14, 1945, he worked for his father in the plumbing and heating business. Mr. Berryman worked for Kriz-Davis Co. in Grand Island for 25 years, retiring in 1978.
He married
Vera M. Smith of Scotia in 1973.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scotia, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 150 of Scotia, Cedar River Masonic Lodge of Fullerton, Masonic Lebannon Council of Central City and Shrine Tahama Temple of Hastings.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; two stepchildren, Evan Smith of Scotia and Pamela (Mrs. Mike) Hudson of Holdrege; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
